During the AFRICA FINANCIAL SUMMIT - AFIS (#AFIS2024), BwB in collaboration with Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and UBS Optimus Foundation had the honour of hosting a roundtable discussion on "Financing Essential Government Projects: Mobilising Domestic and International Resources Through Innovative Financial Instruments" The session brought together distinguished leaders and sector experts, including Mahmoud Mohieldin, Prof. Carlos Lopes, Ahmed Rashad ATTOUT, Heike Harmgart, Franck ADJAGBA, Dr Nyangasi Oduwo, Clarissa Mayer, and Chris Smith. 🌍 Participants shared their experience, insights, and ideas on issues such as bridging financing gaps for projects in Africa by harnessing #catalyticcapital, utilising #innovativefinancialinstruments such as #blendedfinance structures, and strategies for strengthening partnerships among governments, development banks, private sector leaders, and philanthropic organisations. Last week, BwB Executive Director Christine Zhou attended the Future Ready event in #Blackpool as part of Innovate UK Net Zero Living Programme, where BwB supports local and combined authorities across the UK with their finance and investment needs, alongside our partners at CityScience. The gathering was a brilliant opportunity to connect in person with the cohort of 50+ innovative, place-based projects and facilitate conversation over key challenges and emerging solutions. While the projects are diverse and reflect local contexts, the event highlighted the immense value of gathering shared experiences into one room and promoting organic knowledge exchange. Christine commented: “It was incredibly energising to bring project teams together, alongside expert partners and government representatives, many of whom we’ve been working closely with over the last months. Net Zero Living is a unique programme in its scale and scope, and these convening opportunities help promote collective problem-solving, working to accelerate everyone’s journey towards #NetZero.” A big thank you to Innovate UK, Urban Foresight, Liminal and all the projects and stakeholders for making this such a meaningful event. Africa Capital Hub launch at #AFIS2024 establishes new landmark in accelerating green and social transactions. During yesterday's session of the AFRICA FINANCIAL SUMMIT - AFIS, we proudly unveiled the Africa Capital Hub (ACH), a major new BwB initiative that aims to catalyse transformative change for a sustainable future for Africa. Supported by the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and UBS Optimus Foundation, the ACH will mobilise capital and build local capacity to drive high-impact green and social projects across the continent. The Hub's target on launch is to unlock at least U$1 billion in private, public, and philanthropic financing for sustainable projects by 2030. We were honoured to mark this milestone moment with Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and Serge EKUE, President of the West African Development Bank, who were joined by BwB Managing Director Chris Smith on stage to discuss the ACH and its mission. Last week, BwB Executive Director, Christine Zhou, and Associates, Tommaso Buso and Emre Eren, joined consortium partners in Marseille for the kickoff meeting of the LIFE BanPER project. The project's primary objective is to help accelerate the rollout of #energyefficiency #renovations for privately owned residential homes through the implementation of an innovative neighbourhood-based #portfolioapproach. BanPER will develop a Neighbourhood Energy Efficiency Scheme (NEES) in Marseille that can serve as a blueprint for replicability in other European cities and regions. “Real change starts at the community level. With LIFE BanPER, we are developing a neighbourhood approach to energy efficiency that can inspire and guide cities across Europe to create greener, more sustainable homes,” Christine remarked.
