About us
Aurora is a new Ofgem regulated Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO). Licensed to work anywhere in Great Britain, we are proud to enable economic growth and long-term sustainability by connecting new developments to the electricity grid. We help developers and Independent Connection Providers (ICPs) design dependable, efficient, safe, innovative and cost-effective electrical networks so they can connect to the grid in the most environmentally friendly way possible. We operate across five core sectors: • Electric vehicle charging: This includes cars, buses, trucks, trains and trams. From service stations and EV points, to forecourts and super-charging hubs, Aurora is helping to accelerate the UK to net zero. • Battery storage and renewables: We adopt BESS connections and renewable energy projects of all sizes and voltages, right up to 132 kV, driving the nation’s energy transition forward. • Data centres: From smaller edge data centres to huge hyper-scalers, Aurora has the expertise to get them connected in a more efficient and sustainable way than ever before. • Industrial and commercial: This includes offices, schools, warehouses, factories, hospitals, shops, and more. With our expertise, new buildings will be fit for a greener, cleaner future. • Residential: From new housing developments to high-rise apartments or urban regeneration projects, we are supporting developers to keep project costs down, connect quickly, and lower their carbon footprint. By partnering with Aurora, developers and ICPs benefit from market-leading asset value payments, unrivalled customer service, and industry expertise to help decarbonise developments and create sustainable local communities and businesses of the future. There is no silver bullet when it comes to making data centres carbon neutral; it will take flexible and strategic tactics to gradually lower their dependence on fossil fuels. According to Aurora’s Strategy and Investment Director, Charles Hesketh, innovations in renewables and taking a measured approach to grid connections will help to drive sustainability in data centres. He thinks that UK data centres are perfectly positioned as they enter the new digital-first, net zero era – but they need to act fast when it comes to their environmental credentials. Congratulations to DHL Supply Chain for making sure its new logistics facility is carbon neutral. 🎉 🎉 🎉 The site in Coventry is entirely powered by renewable electricity and is the first operationally carbon neutral new build DHL site in the UK. 🙌 💚 As well as an air source heat pump which provides all the warehouse and office heating and cooling requirements, 3,000 solar panels and an onsite batter storage system provides almost half of the site’s electricity. In addition, the site features 30 electric vehicle charging spaces and uses all-electric material handling equipment as well as a brand new fully electric tug. Sustainable logistics and materials handling facilities are the future if we are to achieve #NetZero. These future proofed sites need fast and safe connections to the grid, and we are pleased to be able to support many of them across the UK transition to low or neutral carbon operations. https://lnkd.in/eaeyjKJA #SustainableLogistics #LogisticsandNetZero #LastMiletoNetZero

Have you heard of the Scottish Zero Emission Bus Challenge Fund (ScotZEB)? 💷 The The Scottish Government is driving the decarbonisation of its nation’s public transport sector forward by offering grants and subsidies to private companies willing to embrace zero emission vehicles. 🚐 ⚡ 🌿 Millions of pounds have already been distributed and we’re starting to see more zero-carbon buses on our roads as a result. It gives the green light to companies who want to ensure their operations are as sustainable as possible. There has been significant uptake; Aurora team are working hard to help connect new #EV charging stations at bus and coach terminals across the UK. This is a great initiative, and we wonder if more governments will follow? 🤔 https://lnkd.in/eVq4Y95W

McKinsey & Company believe that ‘by the end of the decade, hyperscaler data centres will host the lion’s share of data centre AI workloads.’ 📈 💻 This report explains how data centres have exploded in size in terms of power consumption. According to the analysis, ten years ago a 30-megawatt (MW) centre was considered large. Today, a 200-MW facility is considered normal. McKinsey’s experts believe that the driving force for this is the computing power required for #AI workloads, which, in turn, bumps up energy consumption. It is clear; the need for large data centres will only grow so proactivity is needed now to ensure they are built in a sustainable way, and take a measured and strategic approach to energy consumption. https://lnkd.in/eAFgnX-z #LastMiletoNetZero #DataCentres #Sustainability

Congratulations to Stagecoach Group Limited for reaching a key milestone in the company’s strategy to electrify its buses and coaches. 👏 👏 👏 One of Britain’s most-recognised transport companies has announced 15% of its fleet is now powered by electric, and that figure is expected to increase. 🚍 ⚡ The investment follows Stagecoach’s success in being rewarded funding through the schemes; Zero-Emission Regional Bus Areas (Zebra) and the Scottish Zero Emission Bus Challenge Fund (ScotZEB). This is a great example of a company taking proactive, positive action as part of a wider #ESG strategy to modernise its fleet and make it sustainable for years to come. https://lnkd.in/ePFVPjAR #EVBuses #NetZero #Sustainability

📢 The UK government is giving the public sector a £230million boost to not only improve schools, hospitals, leisure centres, and other public buildings, but to make them environmentally friendly. 🌍 💚 Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, said: “We are a world-leader when it comes to reducing carbon emissions - and for us to reach our goal of net zero by 2050, we want to help public bodies like schools and hospitals to do their bit.” It is crucial that any upgrades, such as installing solar panels or EV charging stations, that take place cause zero disruption to the day-to-day running of these important buildings. Our unrivalled knowledge of local planning regulation, land permits, our connections with local authorities and energy suppliers, and our fast, flexible and straightforward approach, means we can support the transformation of our public buildings without any disruption. #LastMiletoNetZero
