📢 We are pleased to share the publication of the paper, “Developing a prototype for federated analysis to enhance privacy and enable trustworthy access to COVID-19 research data”, in the International Journal of Medical Informatics. This paper outlines a collaborative effort during the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic by the International COVID-19 Data Alliance (ICODA), Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), SAIL Databank, Aridhia – Digital Research Environment – DRE, and other partners, working closely with researchers from the International Perinatal Outcomes in the Pandemic (iPOP) Study. Together, we successfully piloted a federated network infrastructure that enabled secure analysis of sensitive health data without transferring it from the source. This proof of concept used aggregate-level test outputs from iPOP Study data to demonstrate how federated analytics can overcome cross-border governance and security challenges. This initiative helped demonstrate the feasibility and value of federated approaches for collaborative global health research and learnings from which are being used in initiatives such as the Alzheimer's Disease Data Initiative's Federated and Distributed data Sharing Appliance (FDSA), the DARE UK Transformational Programme, and HDR UK's broader Federated Analytics programme. ➡️ Read the full paper here: https://hubs.li/Q030jG9y0

"Why does health data—the backbone of groundbreaking research—still lack the infrastructure and funding it deserves?" Globally, from the recent independent UK review by Prof Cathie Sudlow, to broader challenges in health data management, the story is the same: secure and efficient data infrastructure is often undervalued or underfunded. Many research initiatives rely on outdated models like manual processes or HPC systems, which struggle with the demands of sensitive health data, creating compliance risks and inefficiencies. Secure Data Environments (SDEs) provide a smarter way forward, combining security, scalability, and cost-effectiveness to enable collaborative and federated research at scale. Dive into our latest blog to see how SDEs tackle these pressing issues and pave the way for the future of health data management: https://lnkd.in/ggtRRxDC

Professor Cathie Sudlow's recent report 'Uniting the UK's Health Data' addresses many long-standing limitations on the appropriate secondary use of routine health data for clinical research, clinical trials and the long tail of potential innovations that could improve many aspects of the clinical care and day to day operational challenges facing the NHS. There's discussion about the role of Secure Data Environments (SDE's) as an enabling approach to safely working with data and allowing experimentation and innovation to take place in safe, secure analytical spaces removing the need for the crude, clumsy and risky business of shipping/selling/licensing health data (call it what you like, but basically losing control of the provenance and use of data once it has left the premises). Dr Kim Carter, Aridhia's Chief Data Officer has written an interesting blog reflecting on the wider adoption of SDE's and their ability to address many of the key call outs from Cathie's report. Aridhia has been at the leading edge of developing, deploying and investing in all things related to SDE's long before the term ever came into our vocabulary. We have deployments from Australia, through Europe and North America with data contributions from over 100 countries and we've recently just open-sourced our Federation Node to remove some of the challenges and friction in enabling federated discovery and analysis, so if you want a chat about SDE's, drop us a note. https://lnkd.in/gGSgT7_R

A lovely article and a testament to innovation, entrepreneurial thinking and perseverance. The AD Data Initiative recognised from day 1 the potential of joining the dots across multi-modal data generated from a spectrum of AD use cases (observational studies, trials, routine memory clinic data, multi-omics, imaging studies....) and importantly to have wide ethnicity and geography within the data. There are many technical challenges to align and harmonise diverse data, many cultural challenges to overcome to encourage sharing rather than hoarding of data and many governance challenges on the appropriate use of privileged, consented data. The AD Data Initiative has worked thoughtfully and purposefully to address those issues and create an environment for collaboration and co-operation in AD and related neurological conditions. The end goal remains the same, how to accelerate understanding of disease progression and enable faster availability of diagnostics and disease modifying therapies. The Aridhia – Digital Research Environment – DRE is the platform underpinning the functionality and scale of the AD Workbench and we're proud to have been there from the start and look forward to continuing the journey to help accelerate outcomes for AD patients and their families.
Four years after the launch of the AD Data Initiative, our partners have come together to refresh the priority Alzheimer's disease research questions that initially inspired us to establish this coalition. They now encompass a wider range of research areas, including novel biomarkers and diagnostics, potential uses of AI to accelerate research, and risk prediction in low- and middle-income countries. Learn more about how we'll use these updated questions to drive our work.

Niranjan Bose thanks for posting. The Alzheimer's Disease Data Initiative has been the pioneer in enabling collaboration and data sharing for Alzheimer's and related conditions. The field was a poorer place before the AD Data Initiative; opportunities for collaboration were limited to smaller bi-lateral relationships, datasets were undiscoverable and siloed. Through the AD Data Initiative, the field has been opened to enable wider collaborative relationships to form across the trajectory of Alzheimer's and for those ideas and innovations to take shape through the AD-Workbench and AD-Connect. I'd echo your thanks to the coalition partners for undertaking a venture that was clearly missing in the fight to accelerate therapy options and diagnostics for Alzheimer's. Related AD data need to be discoverable and usable. Collaborations across domains - industry, academia and healthcare - need to be made and executed with less friction and the AD Data Initiative is doing this day in and day out, hats off to you! For Aridhia – Digital Research Environment – DRE we're extremely proud and humbled that our DRE Platform provides the core infrastructure and functionality for the AD-Workbench network. Look forward to continuing the journey.
Four years ago, I joined forces with leading Alzheimer’s and dementia research organizations to launch the Alzheimer's Disease Data Initiative. Our idea was simple: By bringing vast amounts of scattered disease-related datasets and platforms together, we might be able to help researchers achieve breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Since then, the AD Data Initiative has flourished. Thousands of researchers now use our AD Workbench—a free, secure, cloud-based platform for data sharing and analysis that’s interoperable with similar systems. Organizations are leveraging these tools to draw from an expanded pool of data, collaborate on innovative projects, and generate even more valuable research. We’ve also established a fellowship program (named in honor of my father) and other initiatives to help researchers answer their most pressing questions and drive the field forward. This is a moment of great possibility for Alzheimer’s and dementia R&D. After years of stagnation, the first disease-modifying treatments and much better diagnostic tests are becoming available. At the same time, AI-powered tools are emerging that can significantly accelerate scientific discovery. I’m more excited than ever about the potential for data sharing to help address the biggest challenges in Alzheimer’s and dementia—and I’m proud to extend my commitment to the AD Data Initiative for the next four years. We have the partners, we have the momentum, we have the data and the tools—and, with more than 50 million people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia worldwide, we still have the urgent need.
