Safeguarding policies and procedures can help protect people involved in your sport and activity from abuse and exploitation. Unfortunately, we continue to see far too many examples of what happens when safeguarding goes wrong. It’s common to see people talk about the things we can learn from instances of abuse, neglect, and grooming. But what sort of lessons are we supposed to learn, and how are we supposed to make them stick? A short introduction to "Fairness Informed Practice". "The experience of fair treatment can provide hope, a sense of stability, and predictability in often chaotic situations. It can also reduce stress, increase well-being, and support people to feel worthy of care and consideration." Following our 2024 AGM, Steve Kiekopf and Tracy Girling from Sense led a seminar on Understanding Consent and Choice. Individuals with complex needs often do not have the opportunity to learn about how they can keep themselves safe. This year Sense ran a pilot project with individuals attending their college and day service to better understand the concepts of consent and choice. Consent and choice are crucial to someone understanding their rights relating to safeguarding and keeping safe. Sense worked with VAMOS THEATRE COMPANY to explore these issues. They ran theatre and role play workshops using gesture, masks, and non-formal communication. In this way they explored these key themes, helping participants recognise that their ‘No’ is as valuable as their ‘Yes’. They also explored various different ways of making choices, and how they might communicate these choices to others. In this free online seminar, Steve and Tracy discussed this project, and their findings. You can watch a video of the session on our website. Please note this video also features our AGM. We host forum meetings for people who take on the Lead Safeguarding role in independent national sport and activity organisations that are not required by Sport England to complete the Safeguarding Adults Framework. Our forums provide the opportunity to stay up-to-date with the latest safeguarding developments. They also act as a peer support network, and allow you to share best practice. The next forum is on Tuesday 10 December. At this meeting we will be joined by Chris Harris from Broxtowe Women's Project, who will provide an overview of the White Ribbon campaign and domestic abuse. Cognitive impairment and exploitation: an investigation into evidence, responses and policy implications. At the 2024 Safeguarding Adults Conference in Nottingham, Dr Alison Gardner shared findings from a two-year research project that explored how cognitive impairments can increase risks for adult exploitation. Joining her were Ann Craft Trust Head of Safeguarding Adults Lisa Curtis, and some representatives from CASBA Advocacy, who contributed to the project. The study explored how people are targeted for exploitation. It also asked why cognitive impairments might make one more at risk of exploitation. You can read a summary of the session, and watch a recording of a webinar Dr Gardner ran during Safeguarding Adults Week, on our website: https://lnkd.in/ek84egU8 #SafeguardingAdultsWeek
