“This Is What a Real Influencer Looks Like” This morning, I came across a banner outside Outwood Grange Academies Trust (Outwood Academy Brumby) in Scunthorpe, and as someone immersed in the social media world every day, it really resonated with me. In my opinion, this banner is absolutely on point. It also made me feel a little sad when I reflected on the modern world, especially as a parent of a teenage daughter still in school. I often hear about the people she follows and is influenced by online, and it’s worrying. We are who we surround ourselves with, both in real life and online. With the amount of time young people and adults spend on social media, it’s no surprise we’re seeing a decline in social skills and communication, alongside an increasing obsession with likes and follows. Unfortunately, I fear this trend is only going to get worse. As parents, uncles, aunts, friends, and even managers, we all have a responsibility to guide young people. Let’s encourage them to join sports teams, take part in clubs, go for walks, read books, and develop critical thinking skills. They need to learn to question what they see online instead of accepting it at face value, whether it’s from influencers or news channels. Morning rant over!
