Ideas to life...

About us

The Innovation Village is a destination entrepreneur’s call home. Our idea is simple, everybody who has an idea that could transform society should be given the opportunity to do so. Setting out in mid-2015, our motivation came from watching multiple innovation competitions and award ceremonies that focus on the top 3 winners out of 100 submissions. In trying to answer what happens to the 97 ventures, we built The Innovation Village to be a destination they call home. Today we have converged over 2,000 entrepreneurs 40% of these young women across six sector labs. Our standard solution offering across the Labs is access to Capital, Capacity, Networks, Insights on Sector trends, Market opportunities and influencing policy. We have created the largest destination of entrepreneurs in the country by bringing together key players—from startups and global brands, to government agencies, academic institutions, tech incubators and accelerators—to create an entrepreneurial density like no other. Resultantly we have created the same destination for investors, corporate, academia and global partners like Andela, Challenges Worldwide, EnVentures and FinAfrica who are happily collocating with our budging startup entrepreneurs. Our goal is to help foster a wave of companies that make not just a measurable impact in the world, but a noticeable improvement in the lives of everyone on the planet.

  • Yesterday, we were excited to host the #AgriSolar #DemoDay, this year’s final event of the #AgriSolarAcceleratorProgram. The event provided participating startup founders with the opportunity to present their innovative solutions and pitch their ideas to a carefully curated panel of judges and potential investors, highlighting strategic pathways to scale and secure critical resources for growth. It also served as a platform for building valuable connections with local VCs and strategic partners.

  • Across Africa, the gap between groundbreaking academic research and real-world application remains one of the continent’s greatest untapped opportunities. Each year, universities and research institutions generate a wealth of insights, solutions, and prototypes addressing critical challenges in healthcare, agriculture, technology, and more. Yet, too often, these innovations fail to transition from the lab to the marketplace, leaving their immense potential unrealized.    So, how can African research be transformed into market-ready solutions that drive innovation and socio-economic growth? This is where our partnership with Makerere University on the Research-to-Industry (#R2I) initiative becomes a pivotal intervention. Designed as a transformative platform, #R2I aims to reimagine how African research institutions contribute to socio-economic growth by translating academic insights into impactful, market-ready solutions. Through the R2I Platform, we intend to provide a collaborative infrastructure that fosters innovation, shared resources that streamline the journey from research to commercialization, and funding mechanisms that remove barriers and accelerate impact. These efforts are aimed at positioning African research institutions as global leaders in innovation and problem-solving. The timing of this initiative could not be more ideal. It aligns with both the National Development Plan III and Makerere University’s strategic goals which emphasize the urgent need for a research-led, innovation-driven approach to economic growth. By leading the #R2I Platform, we will capitalize on this momentum, leveraging shared infrastructure and structured commercialization processes. This will enable Makerere University to access a collaborative ecosystem that addresses pressing challenges while transforming research into tangible societal benefits. This initiative represents a bold step forward in unlocking the potential of African research to drive transformative change and create a lasting impact across the continent and beyond.

  • As the world rapidly embraces Artificial Intelligence, Uganda faces a dual challenge; bridging the gap in basic digital skills while ensuring we do not lose sight of building the foundational digital infrastructure necessary to thrive in this era. As highlighted in our recent Digital Economy Webinar in partnership with TechCabal Insights, this challenge is both urgent and complex. According to the World Bank, only 22% of Ugandans have basic digital skills such as using email or browsing the internet, while less than 5% are proficient in more advanced skills. Yet, AI is accelerating globally, with projections from PwC estimating it could contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. So how do we ensure Uganda doesn't get left behind? The answer lies in a strategic approach; capacity building at all levels, strategic partnerships, investment in robust digital infrastructure, and policies that prioritize inclusive access to technology.
