We are a pan-African feminist leadership development organization.
About us
Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) is a feminist Pan-African leadership development organization with headquarters in Kampala, Uganda. Our work is rooted in feminist principles and beliefs guided by the Charter of Feminist Principles for African Feminists which define the leadership development program and movement building activities. The organization envisions a world in which African women are politically, economically and socially autonomous and are champions of change in their lives and society. Thematic areas of focus include; Political participation and decision making, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and women’s economic justice. AMwA provides strategic direction in key Pan-African networks including NGO CSW Africa, Solidarity for African Women’s Rights and the Gender Is My Agenda Campaign. AMwA also has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

AMWA hosted a Reflection Space on Movement on November 13th, 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya. The event brought together practitioners, academics, activists, and advocates to explore how feminist transformative leadership models and alternative approaches contribute to movement-building. The absence of documented successful strategies had limited the replication and scaling of effective movement-building practices. The gathering provided a valuable opportunity to unpack and amplify these strategies. For African feminists, the power to influence policy grew through collective action and the strength of alliances. #FTL #MovementBuilding #AMwA

It’s time for an honest conversation! For so long, the private sector has been positioned as the solution to our development challenges, even with its profit-driven agenda at the people's and planet's expense. How do we reclaim this social contract and ensure that states play a role that centres on justice and inclusion, especially for structurally marginalised people? Join powerful feminist voices from the Global South at this year’s @AWID Forum as we explore: "Framing a Global South Feminist Social Contract for a Just Transition." 📢 Calling on policymakers to use an intersectional approach to ensure SRHR for all! Everyone needs access to healthcare, including sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Yet, many people are left behind because of, for instance, their gender, sexuality, financial situation and social status. This needs to change. Over the past couple of months, Make Way and partners have shared the stories of trailblazers who are paving the way in SRHR by using an intersectional approach. So that those who are often excluded when it comes to policies, services and information are finally seen. We hope that these stories from youth, journalists, religious leaders and civil society have brought to light the power of intersectionality and the need for its application in SRHR. A big thank you to all our partners who collaborated @amwaafrika, The Circle, Cheshire Disability Services Kenya, @lilianefonds @fawe_regional @vso_nederland @wemos_healthjustice @metakenya2018 @diverseempower @impanuro & more. Let’s continue our call for intersectionality!
