What is To Write Love on Her Arms?
To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire, and invest directly into treatment and recovery.
To Write Love on Her Arms began in Orlando, FL, in 2006 when our founder, Jamie Tworkowski, wrote a story about a friend and the five days preceding her entry into treatment. The story, which was entitled “To Write Love on Her Arms,” went viral, and T-shirts were initially printed and sold as a way to pay for that friend’s treatment. Since then, TWLOHA has become a non-profit which serves as a bridge to hope and help for people facing the same issues.

Financial / Donations
-
Where does the money go?
TWLOHA uses the proceeds from merch sales and donations to carry out the mission of the organization. This translates to bringing a conversation about hope and help to millions of people online and thousands of people in-person at events. It also involves supporting our annual campaigns (like World Suicide Prevention Day), our programs for high school and college students, and events that make it possible for us to combat the stigma and connect people to local, affordable mental health resources. The funds raised keep our FIND HELP Tool operating and expanding as we add new mental health providers to our database as well.
We are also fortunate to be able to invest a portion directly into treatment and recovery. For a complete breakdown of how funds are used, check out our financial reports.
To date, we have given $2.5 million to 100 unique organizations and counseling practices. Below is a list of some of the organizations and counseling groups that TWLOHA has provided funding through grants and counseling scholarships.

Why is merchandise important for TWLOHA as a non-profit?
In the beginning, before TWLOHA was a non-profit, our Title T-shirt was sold to help pay for one person’s treatment. As TWLOHA began to grow, we continued to use merchandise as a way to finance our work. While we do receive additional revenue from programs, donations, and speaking honorariums, TWLOHA is somewhat unique in that the sale of our merchandise remains a primary source of funding for the ways in which we give back.
Every piece of merchandise also has a much bigger purpose. It’s a conversation starter. It’s something that ties supporters together as a community. It spreads the TWLOHA message to someone who might not have found out about us otherwise. It shares hope.
