Can Tho's seafood exports reach over US$ 387 million Can Tho's seafood export output in the past 9 months is estimated at 118,000 tons with a turnover of over US$ 387 million. Many aquaculture areas of Can Tho have VietGAP standards to meet the requirements for export, increasing the value of aquaculture products in the area. According to the Department of Fisheries of Can Tho City, the city's aquaculture area in the past 9 months was over 7,900 hectares, an increase over the same period last year. The harvested area was over 3,100 hectares with over 162,000 tons of output, equal to 98% over the same period in 2023. Currently, the selling price of raw pangasius ranges from 26,500 - 27,500 VND/kg, an increase of 500 - 1,000 VND/kg, the average price is 26,000 - 27,000 VND/kg. For the aquaculture areas which have VietGAP and BAP + ASC standards (A set of assess output ment standards applied to the aquaculture industry to help manage responsible and effective aquaculture) in Can Tho is 193 hectares. Currently, the city has 77 facilities for producing and raising aquatic breeds of all kinds, including 15 facilities for producing shrimp breeds and 62 facilities for producing and raising fish breeds. For pangasius breeds, the area is more than 260 hectares, with an output of over 2,000 tons. The price of pangasius fry ranges from 29,000 - 33,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 1,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year. April 2024: Many positive signals from tuna export markets Tuna exports with HS code 16 are increasing In the past 5 years, Vietnam's processed and canned tuna exports have tended to increase. In the first 4 months of the year alone, the export turnover of this product group increased from 91 million USD in 2020 to 154 million USD in 2024, an increase of 70%. In particular, Vietnam's canned tuna exports are gradually recovering, higher than the same period in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. On the contrary, exports of fresh and frozen tuna, mainly frozen tuna meat or loin with the HS code 0304, are unstable. After peaking in 2022, exports of this product group decreased sharply. Entering 2024, exports of product groups have increased again, but the increase is not high—up 6% over the same period. According to experts' forecasts, convenience is key for shoppers, and value-added seafood that is pre-marinated or ready to heat and eat will continue to attract buyers looking to create combination meals to combine cooking with prepared dishes. Therefore, consumption demand for processed and canned tuna products will improve in the near future. Exports to major markets accelerated In April 2024, Vietnamese tuna products were exported to more than 90 markets. In particular, tuna exports to main markets such as the US, EU, Israel, Canada, Japan, or Mexico all increased faster. In the US and EU markets, Russia, and Korea, the export growth rate in April 2024 compared to the same period doubled compared to the previous month, reaching 37%, 71%, 32%, and 158%, respectively. Notably, in the EU market, exports to the three leading markets, Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands, all grew "gallopingly" at three digits. Along with that, tuna exports to some markets have reversed and increased, such as Japan, which increased by 33%, and Mexico, which increased by 43%. #collaboration 🤝 Wageningen Plant Research and The College of Agriculture and Bioresources at National Taiwan University signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly establish a research center. This center will address the severe impacts of climate change on global agricultural cultivation and production systems 🚜 🌏 Taiwan has the national ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. As agriculture is an important part of Taiwan's economy, in 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture announced the roadmap for net-zero emission in the agriculture sector and committed to a net-zero emission goal by 2040. To reach these goals, Taiwan seeks cooperation with international partners. Wageningen Plant Research visited Taiwan to explore the potential of cooperating on different themes in horticulture. The key topics of this visit included: ✔ Crop physiology and modeling of horticulture crops in the autonomous greenhouse ✔ Application of machine learning (AI) in autonomous greenhouse and robotic systems ✔ Development of climate-resilient crops with automated digital phenotyping for targeted breeding 👩‍🔬 This collaboration would integrate the strengths and research resources of both institutions. "Decade of Genetically Modified Corn in Vietnam: Productivity Gains and Sustainable Development" Over the past decade, the introduction of genetically modified (GM) corn in Vietnam has significantly improved productivity and provided notable socio-economic benefits to farmers. In 2022, GM corn cultivation reached 220,000 hectares, representing 26.5% of the country’s total corn area, with cumulative cultivation exceeding 700,000 hectares since 2015. GM corn varieties, which offer resistance to key pests such as corn borers and fall armyworms, have increased yields by an average of 30.4% and reduced pesticide use by 78%. Additionally, farmers growing GM corn have experienced cost savings of up to $31.30 per hectare and earned VND4.5-5 million more per hectare compared to those planting conventional varieties. However, GM corn's yield advantages are mainly seen in areas with high pest pressure, while its productivity is comparable to traditional varieties in regions with lower pest pressure. Experts have also highlighted potential risks to biodiversity, including shifts in pest dynamics and impacts on the soil microbiome. To optimize the use of GM corn, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends close collaboration between seed suppliers and local agricultural authorities to strategically plan cultivation in high pest-pressure areas and ensure sustainable development.

📰CHALLENGES FOR THE GLOBAL COFFEE INDUSTRY: Output Declines Sharply in Vietnam and Brazil 🔎In Vietnam, although the recent heavy rains have alleviated concerns about drought, they cannot save the upcoming Robusta coffee crop yield. It is anticipated that Robusta production in Vietnam will decrease by 10-20%. This situation not only affects Vietnam but also Brazil, the world's largest coffee exporter, which is also witnessing a sharp decline in exports. 🔎The Chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (Vicofa) has warned about the Robusta coffee production situation. The combination of drought, extreme heat, and pest attacks such as mealybugs and red mites are the main reasons for the significant decline in the upcoming crop yield. 📊According to Vicofa's estimates, Vietnam's Robusta coffee production for the 2024/25 season will only reach about 21.40 to 22.70 million bags. 🔎The current situation poses many challenges for the Vietnamese coffee industry and the global market. This is probably one of the most significant numbers I have seen in the global dairy industry stats for a long time. In Australia we lament about markets lost, we scratch our heads about why we have become uncompetitive in globally in producing milk, and we try to cling on to the hype that went into the short term spike in demand in China and how everyone chased the Golden Egg and how we hope it will come back. But the reality is that it was all a false economy that sucked in a lot of new money whilst China built out their own supply to plug this demand gap. I spent a lot of time advising that this would happen and how we need to keep a balance of risks in our markets and don’t throw all our eggs in one basket. And I was also cautious about how much farm and cow IP and infrastructure we sold off for short term gain. Now those that chased this short term gain are so perplexed about how China became such a strong and fast growing competitive milk supplier. In conclusion all I can say is well done China. A country that respects the importance of food security, and backs it by providing the infrastructure and policy to enable investment and growth for the long term! A lot of lessons to be learnt here.
