Despite a weak domestic market marked by investment delays and focused spending in areas such as high bandwidth memory (HBM), firms like PSK, Juseong Engineering, and TES enhanced sales and profitability by boosting equipment supplies to China. Major semiconductor players, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, are adopting a cautious investment strategy amid overall IT market sluggishness and rising uncertainties. They favor cost-effective conversion investments over new facilities, concentrating spending on advanced DRAM and HBM. Notably, Samsung has paused its investment plans for the new Taylor Foundry fab in the U.S. and is adjusting its Pyeongtaek Campus in Korea, reflecting a prudent outlook for future expenditures. PSK recorded sales of 118 billion won and an operating profit of 29.1 billion won, marking year-on-year increases of 25.6% and 14.4%. Domestic sales decreased as overseas demand, mainly from China, grew. Juseong Engineering achieved remarkable growth with sales of 147.2 billion won and an operating profit of 52.2 billion won, up 71% and 744% compared to the previous year. TES reported sales of 50.7 billion won and an operating profit of 4 billion won, slightly lower than the prior quarter due to equipment delivery delays. Chinese memory companies like CXMT are heavily investing to enhance production capacities, benefiting domestic front-end equipment firms. Samsung Electro-Mechanics: “Sales from the new factory in Vietnam will begin in the second quarter… We are targeting the AI/PC substrate market” Samsung Electro-Mechanics has announced that its new factory in Vietnam will begin full-scale operations and generate sales in the second quarter of this year. The company plans to focus on MLCC and glass substrates for electronics in this year's facility investment, similar to the previous year. The new plant in Vietnam has already completed customer approval for mass production of products early this year, and sales are expected to start with the operation in the second quarter. The company has been pursuing the expansion of the FC-BGA line in its Vietnam production corporation by spending 1.3 trillion won. FC-BGA is a high-density circuit board essential in the IT industry, connecting system semiconductors to the main board. Despite oversupply in the FC-BGA market due to inventory adjustments and seasonal off-season, the industry is expected to improve in the second half of the year with the expansion of AI PCs and demand for replacement of general PCs and new servers. Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans to increase investment in expansion to respond to the growing demand for automotive MLCC this year. Additionally, the company will invest in securing key technologies, such as establishing a pilot line for glass substrates, and building a business foundation. Samsung's wafer foundry yield rate is low, and customers approached its own brokerage firm to suggest "spinning off and listing in the United States" Samsung Electronics is grappling with severe challenges in its wafer foundry business, including ongoing losses, low yield rates, and customer attrition. Speculation indicates the company may need to spin off its foundry segment and consider a public listing in the United States, as highlighted by a Samsung Securities report. Despite efforts to mass produce its second-generation 3nm GAA process, technical issues have hindered market success, leaving Samsung with only an 11.5% market share compared to TSMC's 62.3%. An online wafer foundry forum set for October 24 underscores the urgency of Samsung's predicament. Analysts predict that Q3 results, due mid-October, will show operating losses around 500 billion won (about US$385 million) in non-memory sectors, including wafer foundry and system LSI. Samsung, MediaTek test RedCap vRAN energy saving: Samsung Networks teamed with MediaTek to test 5G reduced capability (RedCap) over virtualised RAN (vRAN), a move the vendor pitched as demonstrating the technology’s potential to boost IoT device energy efficiency. Eun Yong Kim, VP, head of air technology, networks business at Samsung Electronics, stated in a blog the test was conducted at Samsung’s R&D lab in South Korea. It used Samsung’s vRAN 3.0 software, open RAN compliant radio and MediaTek’s RedCap test platform equipped with its M60 modem. Standards body 3GPP introduced RedCap, or NR-Light, in its Release-17 standard to enable a wider range of low power devices, such as IoT sensors, on 5G networks. The test by Samsung and MediaTek focused on two energy-saving features, Paging Early Indication (PEI) and extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX). He stated it is the first time both have been tested in a vRAN environment. Kim explained PEI notifies a device in advance about the presence or absence of paging signals, which reduces the number of times they need to “wake up” monitoring. He noted this capability resulted in less energy being consumed by the device due to it staying in low-power mode for extended periods. Kim stated eDRX enables a device to enter sleep mode for longer durations, up to three hours in some cases, by increasing the monitoring cycle. “By extending the monitoring cycle of the device, eDRX further contributes to the device’s energy efficiency and battery life,” he noted. Kim quoted Mobile Experts chief analyst Joe Madden, who stated the test “marks an important step toward the necessary interoperability” of RedCap. Kim stated Samsung’s RedCap technology will become commercially available this year across both traditional RAN and vRAN “with plans to apply to Tier 1 operators’ networks”.
