“Offshore wind provides huge benefits, regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum,” said Jonathan Cole, CEO of Corio Generation and Chair of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), at the APAC Wind Energy Summit 2024 in Incheon, South Korea. At the event, Jonathan highlighted the urgent need to overcome critical barriers slowing the deployment of offshore wind projects, including permitting delays, financing obstacles, and supply chain constraints. He emphasised that building strong political and social support is vital for scaling up deployment across the Asia Pacific region. The urgency could not be clearer. Following a global call to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030, the region is expected to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition. ⚠️⚠️NAUTILUS INTERCONNECTOR ⚠️⚠️ The recently published proposals by National Grid Ventures (NGV) concerning Nautilus Interconnector (to connect up to 1.4 GW of offshore wind in the UK to Belgium) combined with the planning applications for ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) East Anglia One North (EA1N) and East Anglia Two (EA2) offshore wind projects reveal the hard evidence that Suffolk Coast and Heaths is in grave danger of mass industrialisation. The onshore devastation can be seen all too clearly on the map which shows kilometres of additional cable corridors gouging through our protected landscapes and a further converter station looming 24 metres high and concreting over an additional 12 acres of greenbelt land. This could impact on additional communities including Theberton, Kelsale, Leiston, Sternfield, Snape and Saxmundham. (To be clear, SEAS are not in favour of any of the onshore routing and converter siting options that have been presented by NGV. If NGV is truly committed to protecting rural coastal communities then they must bring forward a grid connection on a brownfield site.) With its immense potential for clean and stable electricity generation, the industry is experiencing significant growth. However, several challenges must be overcome to achieve the ambitious growth targets outlined in the International Renewable Energy Agency's (IRENA) 1.5°C scenario. Key challenges include limited suitable sites, complex permitting processes, high capital costs, price volatility, and technical issues related to turbine design. To accelerate the development of offshore wind, international cooperation, supportive policies, investments in infrastructure and technology, and a strong commitment to environmental sustainability are essential. Floating offshore wind technology is particularly promising, enabling the exploitation of wind resources in deeper waters and minimizing environmental impacts. The future of offshore wind is closely tied to its integration with other industries, particularly green hydrogen production. This synergy creates a clean and sustainable energy ecosystem. Vietnam, with its abundant offshore wind resources, should implement specific policies and actions to attract investments and develop its offshore wind sector, contributing to the country's energy transition goals. Solutions should focus on streamlining administrative procedures, creating an attractive investment environment, developing human resources, and researching and applying new technologies. In conclusion, offshore wind power offers a promising pathway to ensure energy security and mitigate climate change. — ### North Star Consortium Evaluates Needs for Future Floating Offshore Wind Service Vessel In a pivotal move to advance the development of floating offshore wind (FOW) technology, the North Star consortium has initiated an ambitious project to design and test a cutting-edge service operations vessel (SOV). This innovative endeavor aims to streamline logistics and service requirements, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency in the burgeoning FOW sector. ### Key Players in the Consortium The consortium, led by North Star, brings together a multidisciplinary team with expertise in digital twin and AI decision support software, vessel design, gangway technology, and offshore equipment engineering. M04, a specialist in digital twin and AI decision support software, will assess the feasibility of the proposed SOV concept by evaluating vessel motions, gangway performance, and the movement of floating wind turbine foundations. Principle Power will contribute critical data on the range of motions anticipated from its WindFloat floating offshore wind platforms. Additionally, Principle Power will define operational use cases for inspection, maintenance, and repair to optimize the SOV for future FOW projects. SMST, a seasoned offshore equipment designer and builder, will provide expertise in gangway technology, data on different walk-to-work options, and workability parameters. SMST will also offer solutions for landing height adjustments to ensure safe personnel transfers. VARD will integrate inputs from the various partners to develop an advanced offshore wind ship design. Voith Group, meanwhile, will focus on propulsion options, selecting dynamic position (DP) systems to maintain stability and performance in the dynamic offshore environment. ### Project Scope and Objectives This collaborative effort seeks to address the pressing challenges in maintaining and servicing floating offshore wind turbines. The primary objectives include: 1. **Enhanced Maintenance Solutions**: Developing cost-effective solutions for maintaining floating offshore foundations, especially considering the unique demands of a floating environment. 2. **Optimized Service Operations**: Ensuring the proposed SOV is optimized for the specific needs of next-generation FOW projects, including various operational use cases. 3. **Advanced Vessel Design**: Integrating the latest technological advancements to design an SOV that can efficiently mitigate the adverse effects of wave motions and variable weather conditions. ### Implications for the Offshore Industry The successful implementation of this SOV will significantly improve maintenance efficiency and reduce operational costs in the FOW sector. This is particularly crucial as floating wind farms continue to expand globally, with numerous projects in conceptual or development stages. This figure is projected to exceed 400 GW by 2032 (WFO, 2024). Currently, most offshore wind farms are bottom-fixed, with #floatingoffshorewind (FOW) accounting for less than 0.3 GW. However, #FOW is anticipated to be a key technology for harnessing offshore wind power, as 80% of the world's offshore wind resources are found in waters deeper than 60 meters (GWEC, 2022). The key difference between FOW and bottom-fixed offshore wind is that FOW turbines are mounted on floating platforms anchored to the seabed with mooring lines.
