U.S. Pressure on China Intensifies: Semiconductor Equipment Makers Face Challenges Semiconductor equipment makers' earnings reports are often seen as a key indicator of semiconductor demand. While AI chip development has surged recently, other semiconductor sectors remain weak. Additionally, the U.S. has tightened export restrictions on semiconductor equipment to China, adding further uncertainty. Recently, hawkish U.S. lawmakers sent letters to five major semiconductor equipment firms, demanding details on products sold to China—an action that could impact the operations of these companies. Against this backdrop, let’s look at the latest revenue figures for the top five semiconductor equipment manufacturers to understand the current market landscape. #Applied Materials reported Q4 FY2024 revenue (07/29–10/27) up 5% YoY to $7.05B. Revenue from China, however, dropped 28% YoY to $2.14B, raising concerns that Applied and other semiconductor equipment makers could face reduced demand from China's DRAM sector. Applied projects Q1 FY2025 revenue at approximately $7.15B, with a range of ±$400M. #ASML posted 3Q24 revenue (07/01-09/29) up 11.9% YoY to €7.467B (approx. $7.866B), but new orders dropped by 52.7% sequentially, missing market expectations and prompting ASML to lower its 2025 sales target to €30–35B. With U.S. and Dutch governments tightening export controls on advanced equipment to China, ASML faces increasing challenges in the Chinese market. CFO Roger Dassen cautioned that China’s share of ASML’s total revenue could drop to around 20% over the next year. #Lam Research reported Q1 FY2025 revenue (07/01–09/29) up 8% sequentially to $4.17B. Lam projects Q2 revenue, ending December 29, 2024, to reach $4.3B, with a range of ±$300M. For the China market, Lam expects China’s WFE (wafer fab equipment) spending in 2H24 to be lower than in H1, with China revenue expected to dip to around 30% of total sales in the December quarter. Nonetheless, Lam remains optimistic about WFE growth driven by rising AI and HBM demand. #Tokyo Electron (TEL) reported Q2 FY2025 revenue (07/01-09/30) up 32.4% YoY to ¥566.5B (approx. $3.62B). Revenue from China surged 28% to ¥233.9B (approx. $1.5B), accounting for 41.3% of total revenue. However, with heightened U.S. export controls on China, TEL expects China’s sales share to drop below 40% in the second half of the year. #KLA posted Q1 FY2025 revenue (07/01–09/30) of $2.84B, up 19% YoY, and anticipates Q2 revenue to reach $2.95B, with a range of ±$150M. Although demand in China is subdued, KLA remains optimistic due to ongoing investments in advanced semiconductor processes, particularly in wafer foundry/logic and memory (especially DRAM), which are expected to continue supporting revenue growth and offset some of the adverse impacts. 📊 More semiconductor insights: https://buff.ly/4466Utg 📊 More industry charts: https://buff.ly/4fzUmzQ
