Maybe you’ve heard — or read here — but Season 5B of Yellowstone promises to be no-holds-barred. So if you’re worried about the state of newlyweds Beth and Rip’s union, it’s understandable. There’s “a lot of pressure on [them],” Cole Hauser tells TVLine, “to pick up the pieces and move forward… a lot of new responsibility on the characters as well.”
Of course, Hauser and leading lady Kelly Reilly don’t directly address the elephant in the room: the absence of Kevin Costner as Dutton family patriarch John. But they do offer Beth/Rip fans a welcome reassurance. What’s to come doesn’t tear apart the couple. On the contrary, “we pull together,” Reilly says. “We’re as solid as ever, I can tell you that. Beth needs him this year more than ever.”
Though Season 5A’s finale (recapped here) ended with Beth and John plotting to murder treacherous adopted Dutton Jamie, some of us were kinda hoping that Rip would get to be the one who took his brother-in-law to the train station — especially since it was he who had his pregnant sister sterilized when they were kids. “Well, Rip doesn’t know what Jamie did to Beth,” Reilly reminds. “It’s a secret. It’s still something that he hasn’t been told.”
But if he were to be told… come on! “I have my thoughts about what Jamie is and who he is and what he’s done, obviously, because of the past,” says Hauser, whose character had to help the ne’er-do-well dispose of a body in Season 2. “But that’s not on Rip’s mind this year. What’s on his mind is making sure that he’s taking care of the person he loves the most, and that’s Beth.”
With John presumably out of the picture, a lot of extra pressure would naturally fall on Rip. Is he feeling it? Nah, says Hauser. “I don’t think so. He’s been taught by John Dutton to be in this place. Twenty-five years later, running a ranch to him is second nature.
“The more stressful part was how he was going to move into the house with Beth and feel like he was comfortable in that world,” he adds. “Because he’s been on the outside of that his whole life. So if anything was uncomfortable, it was a couple years back when I was going into the house and sleeping with her inside of my boss’ home.”
“That was fun, watching you sort of squirm about that,” Reilly chimes in, laughing. “Beth was like, ‘What’s your problem?’”
Meanwhile, Rip was, as Hauser puts it, “sitting at the dinner table like, ‘Which fork do I use? Which salad do I eat?’”
Yellowstone Season 5B kicks off Sunday at 8/7 on Paramount Network.
Am I the only one who does not understand Johns hatred for Jaime? John wrote him off the minute that Jaime had the nerve to complain that is plans for the future were being sidelines by John and he was not going to just accept it. From there John has done everything in his power to screw Jaime over. He didnt know about the whole Beth/abortion issue till he was well into hating Jaime.
Jamie*** not Jaime
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only Jamie fan LOL. As someone who binged the series last year, John hates Jamie because he cannot control him. John’s wife convinced him to adopt Jamie when he was a baby. Thus, he was given the Dutton name. In a flashback we saw that Jamie already had plans for his future, but John applied to Harvard and even had someone write Jamie’s essay. Why? Because John wanted a lawyer in the family that he could trust and control. And as we’ve witnessed–Jamie has pulled their fat out of the fire countless times. IMO, the issues started when Jamie gave that interview to the reporter that he killed. Beth mentally abused him and pushed him towards suicide. John figured out what he was doing and saved his life. Then, John wanted Jamie to run for governor to help block the casino, ski lodge and airport. Jamie was onboard at first and then changed his mind. That’s when John humiliated him by announcing his candidacy. A job John hated and is terrible at. Jamie told John and Beth that the ranch isn’t turning a profit and there will be nothing to leave to Tate or Jamie Jr. because John refuses any and everything unless it was his idea. Remember they floated the idea of people having their wedding and reception at the famous Dutton Ranch? John said no. It wouldn’t even break the promise he made to his father.
It’s John Dutton’s way or the highway. With the exception of Kacy, everyone else treats Jamie like he doesn’t matter. Beth has been torturing for decades over a decision he made when he was a teenager. It was an awful thing to do but he has apologized. Jamie was only 16 or 17 when he took her to that clinic. Jamie even said she used to stab him with her fork under the table when they were kids. This was BEFORE the abortion. Beth is just a hateful character and she gets off on belittling and torturing him. I honestly feel like Jamie got a raw deal. He didn’t ask to be adopted. And at any time, he could turn on John and have all of them arrested for their crimes. He knows where all the bodies are buried and I’m sure he has receipts. Jamie is intelligent enough to get himself immunity for turning state’s evidence. So they had better be careful. I do fear that Jamie will not make it out alive and that makes me sad. I hope that he and his son’s mother get to leave Montana and get far far away from The Duttons.
I love this TV couple! One of my favourites ❤️
Oh I feel bad that costner not going to be on but I do enjoy watching i just caught up w all the past just to start last night so im thinking maybe costner not died and he’s just waiting to go after Jamie before he’s sister kills him any way enjoy it and be watching everywhere ty for filling coming back waited for a while
I don’t like that they are saying John committed suicide, that is wrong to do to John and Kevin! As viewers we all know that that would never happen but Taylor should have gotten Kevin back and continued the show! I believe Kevin would have come back is Taylor would have been easier to work with, he has let the fans down by only doing 6 episodes! It’s the number one show and I am shocked that Taylor wrote John’s ending, it was wrong to me!!!
I feel like everyone was hyping up this huge new episode but I was very let down!! I know it was about whether Costner would stay or not and I hated that we had to wait over a year for this??? If it stays as
