The following contains spoilers from Wednesday’s Season 1 finale. Proceed accordingly.
That’s a wrap on Wednesday’s first semester.
The titular character (played by Jenna Ortega) joined Nevermore Academy late in the game, but she’s already left her mark on the peculiar boarding school. The morbid teen solved the mystery of the beast that had been killing locals and even saved everyone from a resurrected historical figure.
In the finale, we learned that Tyler, a hyde, had been manipulated by Ms. Thornhill (Christina Ricci) into murdering those she felt were responsible for her family’s misfortunes as part of an elaborate revenge plot. Wednesday defeated both Ms. Thornhill and Crackstone, who’d been brought back through magic, with help from her classmates, including Eugene and Enid (who finally shifted into her werewolf form). And in a stark change from her first day, Wednesday allowed her colorful friend to hug her.
The Netflix drama hasn’t yet been renewed for Season 2, but co-showrunner Al Gough says he plans to delve further into the morbid teen’s growth if given the chance. “The series is really about a girl who sees the world in black and white, and learning there are shades of gray,” he tells TVLine. “I think like any relationship or any friendship, it can get complicated by other factors. It’s never going to be smooth sailing. And it’s really her learning to navigate the ups and downs of friendship.”
Another area ripe for continued exploration is Wednesday’s eccentric family, which includes her mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), her father Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and younger brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez).
“We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles,” co-showrunner Miles Millar explains. “Catherine is, I think, an iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important.”
With that said, Millar acknowledges that the series is called Wednesday, so they “really want to focus the show on Wednesday.” However, they “definitely want to feature the family as we did this season in a couple of episodes if we were to get a second season.”
What did you think of Wednesday’s freshman run? Grade the finale below, and then share your thoughts in the comments.
only seen one episode so far but … im sorry the casting for the actually addams family is honestly horriable, they dont feel like addams’s at all
We’re all sorry for your spelling abilities
They based the Addam’s family off the original comic not the TV show.
I was excited for this and it was supremely mediocre and doesn’t need a season 2
I loved this, from start to finish. Wednesday (the character) gave me some Buffy vibes, and I was genuinely surprised in a lot of moments.
I would watch a S2 but am not clamoring for it. S1 was good but not great which makes me skeptical S2 would be an improvement. The weakest parts of the season were when they focused on the other students like Bianca
It gave me, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” vibes. I thought this season was good. It told a complete story and the mystery was solved. It also ended with no real major cliffhanger. If this is just a one and done series, I’m perfectly fine with it and if there’s more I’ll definitely tune back in.
Yes!!! I so agree. I loved Sabrina as well, def some similarities. I really enjoyed this show and hope for a season 2!
I was hoping it would have both more horror and more humour. It seemed to turn into a a mediocre teenage movie where if you put the characters into a California burb you would not see much of a difference.
I watched The Addams family growing up and loved it. I did not go into this expecting it to be a carbon copy of the original. And actually I was hoping for it to veer off in its own direction. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m hoping for a season 2!
Tim Burton is more than a genius. This series is clever, beautiful, and fun. What more can I say?
The best part about Wednesday is that she is black and white and not nuanced… A Wednesday who knows shades of grey is an average teenager and boring…
I would have rather she did more interesting torture herself rather than just snarky comments. It really devolves quickly into a boring high school drama.
I loved this series but I wanted more humor and mystery. Looking forward to season 2
Wednesday played like a bad cw show. The school setting was a hogwarts knockoff along with too many unnecessary side characters when you could have used her family as side characters. Writing sucked, wasted Christina Ricci. Also what is up with the magical creatures this is Addams family, clearly they didn’t do their research. Felt like a wannabe chilling adventures of Sabrina. To make season 2 work they would have to ditch the magic school and have Wednesday back at regular school and be a fish out of water. The family would have to be featured more along with their house and the show runners should be replaced with Barry sonnefeld🙂
Love the new show. Enid just tickles me. The cast is fun to watch. Ms Ortega is spot on as Wednesday.
Like Netflix will give this another season.
Wait, maybe one more season before it gets cancelled.
As much as I love Catherine Zeta-Jones, I felt she was too “nice” and “colorful” as Morticia. Morticia has always been more dark and monotone. That being said her role was so minute in the series I can forgive this issue. Luis Guzman was the perfect choice for Gomez. I hope Netflix does pull their usual antics and cancel the series after just one season. I will cancel my subscription if they do. This choice of action is getting a bit old and frustrating.
The Critic who reviewed this is WAY OFF Base.
Hoping Netflix picks it up for season 2. My husband and I weren’t sure during episode 1 but, after watching all the episodes, was extremely disappointed there weren’t more. Excellent series, cast, storyline & extremely pleased with Tim Burton and writers. Addams Family Perfection! Fingers crossed for season 2. 🤏🤏 Snap Snap.
Generally the series was good, but the last two episodes were very disappointing. It seems wednesday took a stupid pill or something. She would never watcha person kill another person, then ignore them or turn her back to them while she tried tofigure out how they died. She would make the Wednesday from Family Values hide her head in shame.
I actually agree. Wednesday went from clever to stupid for no reason at all. Also, there were lots of coincidences, like she never had a vision before when being close to the actual guilty oerson, only in the end. And of course the monster who appeared for the first time to save her. Things like that. I did not hate the last 2 episodes, but I think they are worse than the average of the season. And that was disappointing because I hoped a grand finale.
Cute show but by all means not Addams at all, the only thing that was Addams was in the beginning with the Piranhas.
The show is literally calls Wednesday, it was never about the about the family
I enjoyed Wednesday, but it reminded me more of Monster High then the Addam’s Family.
Jenna Ortega takes Wednesday to another level of consciousness. The storytelling was simple and fun without all the overselling of the “Hollywood Messaging”. Good coming of age story of a well known character without devaluing others. First series in a while that caught and maintained my interested. Thank you.
I hope there’s a season 2. this is the show, I just sit and watch all of it in one go.
I finally found a show both me and my husband enjoyed I hope to see a second season loved the cast of the students maybe not so the parents but, show is more about the students so that’s what is important.
It was like a very good blend of Sabrina and Nancy Drew.
I loved this season! I watched three before Thanksgiving, one TG evening, and finished on, appropriately, Black Friday! I grew up on the original series, hated the earlier movies, but really loved this series. I thought the casting was fabulous, the dialog was wickedly funny, and the whole thing was well-directed by Tim Burton. I’ll be very disappointed if it’s not renewed!
Ortega great. Jones and Guzman not so much. Needless diversity in this, to keep to original macabre flavor although given PC requirements these days, understandable. No need for second season…one and done sufficient.
My brother noticed that Wednesday never blinks. Compared it to the terminator in the Sarah Connor chronicles.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Wednesday. While I did get a hint of a Buffy vibe, it probably is more easily compared to The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I liked Sabrina and I really liked Wednesday. Here is hoping we get a season 2.
