🌱 On November 27, 2024, CANARI held the close out meeting for Phase one of Component one of the Biodiversity Conservation and Agroecological Land Restoration in Productive Landscapes of Trinidad and Tobago (BIOREACH Project). 🗺 This phase produced participatory land use maps focusing on the areas between Plum Mitan and Biche and the Nariva Swamp Environmentally Sensitive Area. 👥 The maps were developed by community members, national civil society organisations (CSOs), and state agencies. The information generated will inform the design and implementation of Phase two which will focus on sustainable land use management planning and activities in the aforementioned communities in addition to Tobago. ➡ Phase two is expected to begin in early 2025. 🌍 Following the successful implementation of their microgrant projects in Haiti, the first cohort of Yves Renard Fellows is now on the cusp of completing the fellowship programme. For their final assignment, they were asked to develop innovative information and communication technology (ICT) products to share insights from their microgrant projects. 🎯 With their storymaps, the Fellows facilitated knowledge mobilisation and information exchange among Haitian CSOs, local communities, nature-based enterprises in and around Haitian KBAs and stakeholders in Creole-speaking Caribbean islands about sustainable livelihoods for biodiversity conservation. 🏛️ All eyes on the ICJ as public hearings on the climate change unfold! 🌍✊ CANARI and the Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance stand in solidarity with Vanuatu and all small island developing states that have turned to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for an advisory opinion on States’ obligations to combat the climate crisis. 🌊⚖️ 📜 This historic case seeks to clarify legal responsibilities of States in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the consequences of failing to act. While the ICJ’s opinion is non-binding, its legal and political significance could shape global climate action. 🌴Vanuatu’s Climate Envoy opened the hearing with powerful words: “The importance of the questions before this Court cannot be overstated. At issue in this case is the legality under the entire corpus of international law of a certain conduct, displayed by specific States over time, which has interfered with the climate system to a point that has already caused significant harm to Vanuatu and that threatens the survival of my people and of humanity as a whole.”🗣️ 🎙️Listen to his opening remarks: https://bit.ly/3OGoAVn 🎥 Tune into the official livestream of the hearings from Dec 2-13 - https://bit.ly/3ZOZfPH #ClimateJusticeNOW #CaribbeanClimateJusticeAlliance #ICJ #1Point5ToStayAlive #ResilientCaribbean #SIDS #GlobalAction

🌊 Fishing Communities in SVG Take Action on Climate Change! CANARI, in partnership with the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Fisheries Division, recently hosted one-day workshops in Barrouallie and Calliaqua to tackle the challenges of climate change. 🌍 Small-scale fisherfolk, government officials, and civil society representatives came together to discuss how climate change is impacting their livelihoods and explored key actions for adaptation at the community level. Key highlights: 🔹 In Barrouallie, fisherfolk emphasised the importance of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) to support food security and economic well-being, as well as the need for better community waste management. 🔹 In Calliaqua, they called for stronger fisherfolk organisations to drive collective action on climate adaptation, as well as improved water security to maintain clean workspaces for fish processing. These workshops are part of the Advancing the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries for Resilient Caribbean Coastal Communities and Livelihoods Project, funded by the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund and co-financed by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection through KfW. 💡 The insights from these sessions will help develop community action plans for a more resilient future. 👉 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/e2z587WX #SustainableFisheries #ClimateAdaptation #CommunityEngagement #saintvincentandthegrenadines #CaribbeanBiodiversityFund #CANARICaribbean

🌍Missed it? Catch up now!🎙 Dr. Ainka Granderson, Resilience Programme Manager at CANARI, joined AM PRIME on WESN - Content Capital to share her insights on the outcomes of #COP29 "The Climate Finance COP." While a $300 billion per year deal was announced, it falls drastically short of the $1.3 trillion scientists say is crucial for SIDS like those in the Caribbean to tackle the worsening climate crisis.🌴🌊💔 Worse, only 10% of climate finance reaches those on the frontlines – including small-scale farmers, fishers, Afro-descendant and Indigenous communities, persons with disabilities, women, and youth.🌍✊ CANARI and the Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance are advocating for localised climate finance! ⚖️💰Just, Equitable and Pro-poor financing must be: •Grants, not loans •Predictable and patient •Facilitated by organisations that truly understand the needs of frontline communities 🔗Watch the full interview here: https://bit.ly/3ZeuJNm Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance: Ama Earth Group Aurae Opus Caribbean Philanthropic Alliance Caribbean Youth Climate Justice Coalition Climate Analytics Caribbean Climate Tracker Environmental Awareness Group Environmental Protection in the Caribbean Global Yaadie IAMovement Island Innovation Jamaica Environment Trust Jamaica Network of Rural Women Producers Kairi Initiatives SAEDI Consulting The Breadfruit Collective The Climate Conscious The Cropper Foundation and many others🍃 #LocaliseFinance #ClimateFinance #ClimateAction #ResilientCaribbean #1Point5ToStayAlive #CaribbeanClimateJusticeNOW #CaribbeanClimateJusticeAlliance #FinanceCOP #SIDS
