Project Overview: Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.
S.
Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State.
The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.
The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects.
Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.
The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc.
(BNI) and Amentum.
WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.
This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 am to 5:00 pm (day shift) or 5:30 pm to 4:00 am (night shift), subject to change.
The project may require employees to work weekends, overtime, holidays, and/or night shift as business needs arise.
Position Summary The HLW Civil Field Engineer is responsible for tasks and activities relating to construction engineering within the Civil discipline (i.
e.
, concrete, structural steel, excavation/backfill, scaffolding, architectural finishes) utilizing nuclear codes and standards.
Responsibilities include the development of work plans, coordinating materials, performing, and documenting inspections, reporting progress, and resolving conflicts in design and construction related to the installation and testing of commodities through turnover to Startup/Commissioning.
This position will be responsible for a variety of construction tasks utilizing nuclear and industrial codes and standards related to concrete, steel, earthwork, architectural installations.
Duties include interpreting design and vender drawings and specifications.
This position requires good planning and organizational skills, ability to perform detailed inspections and the ability to produce accurate, clear, and concise documentation.
Responsibilities: Coordinate with engineering on constructability and design issues relating to commodity installations and work sequencing.
Provides field engineering support and assistance to superintendents, supporting personnel in meeting cost and time schedules, verifies materials, equipment, and quality, and assures results meet design requirements.
Develop work plans, coordinate material take-offs and requisitions, perform and document inspections, report progress, and resolve conflicts in design and construction related to the installation and testing of civil commodities.
Performs Civil Field Engineering activities including inspections, audits and planning to support the installation of formwork, rebar, concrete, structural steel, architectural, earthwork and performs rigging support and planning activities for material and equipment.
Assure procedural compliance, material control, and complete and thorough documentation of inspections for completed work.
Directs or performs preparation of quantity listings of field purchased material and equipment and initiates requisitions for field material purchases.
Supports preparation of construction drawings and schedules, design of temporary construction facilities and ensures preparation of as built drawings and other job plans.
Supports planning and delivery of construction materials and equipment, assuring that proper warehousing and storage exists to ensure environmental protection.
Review’s specifications, purchase orders, subcontracts, inspection reports, delivery schedules, instruction manuals, and technical data to assist and advise on site.
Oversees and coordinates subcontractor work efforts and subcontract changes and interfaces.
Qualifications and Skills Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related subject from an accredited university and 6 years of progressive construction or civil engineering experience; or in lieu of a degree, 12 years of progressive civil related construction/craft experience, civil engineering, and/or civil field engineering experience.
Must be physically able to conduct field inspections and participate in project walk-downs which may require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, using fall protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE), walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, and maneuvering around very small and/or confined spaces.
Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
Must possess the right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.
Minimum Qualifications Previous WTP, DOE, or DOD experience, construction a nuclear facility.
Experience working with and supervising USA Building Trade Unions and craft professionals.
Familiarity with current industry quality standards.
Proficiency in verbal and written communications.
Excellent organization skills.
Requires ability to receive direction from multiple sources and effectively establish priorities.
Flexibility and ability to multitask required.
Knowledge of requirements for Lock Out Tag Out for safety.
Detailed knowledge of AISC and ACI codes.
Understanding rebar placement drawings, steel erection drawings and architectural finish drawings.
Computer literate including experience in 3D and 4D modeling software, word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications in accordance with current Bechtel standards.
Preferred Qualifications Possess Nuclear Construction knowledge.
Experience with, or working knowledge of, Advanced Work packaging (AWP) and associated applications, automation tools, and work practices.
Knowledge of and experience working with Bechtel’s Standard Work Process Procedures (SWPPs) or Bechtel’s Nuclear Work Process Procedures (NWPPs).
Knowledge of Bechtel’s Zero Accident Safety Program and familiar with current industry standards.
Knowledge and experience of the ISMS guiding principles and core functions.
Previous experience with Mathcad and MicroStation.
