Cloud Native Computing Foundation and Linux Foundation Training & Certification Launch Istio Certification

November 6, 2023Announcements, Certification

Key For Connecting, Managing and Securing Microservices

CHICAGO – (Nov. 6, 2023) Cloud Native Computing Foundation and Linux Foundation Training & Certification have launched the Istio Certified Associate (ICA) certification. The new certification demonstrates the holder has a solid understanding of Istio principles, terminology and best practices, which are essential for working in today’s increasingly complex microservices computing environments.

Originally developed and maintained by Tetrate, the ICA is designed for anyone who has a hand in enhancing the performance, reliability and security of applications, particularly in cloud native, Kubernetes-based container orchestration systems. It helps with managing many of the complexities associated with service-to-service communication and provides a unified way to manage and secure these interactions. The Istio community is developing resources to help students prepare for the ICA. To start, Tetrate offers a workshop that helps community members pursuing the ICA.

“Istio is helping to drive service mesh adoption and maturation, especially given its recent CNCF graduation,” said Chris Aniszczyk, CTO, CNCF. “Organizations should be investing in not only service mesh technology to secure, connect and monitor services in cloud native applications but also in making sure its people have a firm understanding of the technology.”

“Investing in demonstrating command of Istio is a strategic move for any IT professional,” said Clyde Seepersad, SVP, and General Manager, Linux Foundation Training & Certification. “An ICA certification ensures employers that the candidate has strong Istio skills.”

“We published Tetrate Academy several years ago to provide free learning resources for Istio and Envoy. Up until its recent contribution to the CNCF, Tetrate’s Istio certification exam was one of the offerings on Tetrate Academy. To date, we have had over 13,000 distinct enrollments,” said Eitan Suez, Lead, Training and Education for Tetrate. “After Istio became a graduated CNCF project, the logical ‘next step’ was for Istio to have an official CNCF certification exam, alongside others, such as Kubernetes’ CKAD and CKA exams. We are proud to have contributed these resources to the wider community.”

The Istio Certified Associate (ICA) certification exam explores the following domains and competencies:

  1. Installation, Upgrades & Configuration (7%)
  2. Traffic Management (40%)
  3. Resiliency & Fault Injection (20%)
  4. Securing Workloads (20%)
  5. Advanced Scenarios (13%)

Candidates are given two hours to complete the exam tasks. Successful candidates will receive a digital certificate and badge. The certification must be renewed every three years.

Interested candidates can enroll here.

About Tetrate
Rooted in open source, Tetrate was founded to solve the application networking and security challenges created by modern computing so enterprises can innovate with speed and safety in hybrid and multicloud environments. As applications evolve into collections of decentralized microservices, monitoring and managing the network communications and security among those myriad services becomes challenging. This is why some of the largest financial institutions, governments and other enterprises rely on Tetrate to deliver modern application networking and security.
