🔍 NLP-Based Clinic Recommendation System 🚑 I’ve developed a project that uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) to help patients identify which clinic they should visit based on their symptoms or complaints. By analyzing text input, the system predicts the most relevant clinic using machine learning models like Random Forest, KNN, and Logistic Regression. How it works: The user inputs their complaint (e.g., "I have a headache"). The system processes the text and suggests the best clinic (e.g., Neurology). Models are trained on a dataset of patient messages to classify and recommend clinics accurately. These clinics are: Orthopedics ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) Ophthalmology Cardiology Psychiatry Internal Medicine Neurology Dermatology Oncology Dentistry Urology Pulmonology 🔧 Technologies used: Python NLP (Text preprocessing & Lemmatization) Scikit-learn for classification models Random Forest, KNN, Logistic Regression This project is a great example of how machine learning can be applied to real-world healthcare problems to improve patient experience and decision-making. When we hire new team members, I have regular check-ins with them. Here’s an interesting story from a decade ago, when Ahmet Eren Başak joined our previous start-up Citus Data. During one of our early meetings, I asked Eren how things were. “They were terrible. Now they are much better.” “What happened?” “Ozgun, I used to be the top engineer in my previous company. Here, I’d take on a small task and open up a pull request. Say, the PR has 5 lines of code. Then, Marco Slot comes in, looks at the PR, and drops in a dozen comments. A few hours later, Andres Freund reads my code and adds another dozen comments. So, I’m thinking, 'it’s just 5 lines of code. How can there be so much to push back?' Every PR feels like a blow. And Marco and Andres are very persistent. After multiple PRs that go like this, I pause to think. They aren’t giving me feedback, they are giving my code feedback. Do I agree with the feedback? Does it make my code better? So, I started thinking deep about every comment I received, and instead of clearing it away, I worked hard to learn from the feedback. As I did that, my code started getting better. As an additional benefit, instead of 20 comments, I’d get 10. Instead of 10, I’d get 5. These days, I get 1-2 comments and that’s it. I also started feeling more comfortable and I’m taking on bigger tasks.” Eren kept on growing from there. Today, I’m excited that he’s joining Ubicloud and that we’ll be able to work together again. 💡 Did you know that Turkish 🇹🇷 is just like a Functional-Programming language. Each suffix added to a word changes its meaning and is like a composable function. Take this Turkish word for example: "Kediseverleştiremediklerimizdenmiymişdiniz?" Which could be written functionally as: (iz(din(miş(miy(n(de(iz(im(ler(dik(me(e(tir(leş(sever(Kedi(""))))))))))))))))) Which in English means: "Is it been told that you (plural or formal) were of those whom we have not been able to convert into a cat lover?" If you don't compose with the e(...) function, for example, the meaning changes drastically to: "Is it been told that you (plural or formal) were of those whom we have not converted into a cat lover?" On the other hand if you don't compose with the miş(...) function then the "Is it been told that" part gets removed from the beginning. Because of the miy(...) the sentence is still a question though. So the word "were" comes to the beginning. Without the "iz" it is no longer plural or formal etc. Because Turkish is a spoken and not a mathematical language the function-domains could get complicated when trying different compositions but the similarities to FP are interesting I think!

Dear all, Feeling happy to be able to share our latest research paper, 'Comparison of Different Machine Learning Techniques in River Flow Prediction' with you. In this study, led by Mehmet Akif Cifci et al., we explored different machine learning techniques to predict river flow rates. We tested models like Linear Regression, Support Vector Regression, Decision Trees, Random Forest, and Extra Trees. What made our approach unique was combining these methods with Wavelet Transform to improve prediction accuracy. Well some key points: -Accurate river flow prediction is essential for better water resource planning, especially with the challenges posed by climate change and population growth. The method: We analyzed data from Tagar Stream Küçükkumluk and Porsuk Stream Porsuk Çiftliği stations in Turkey. The Results: The hybrid model we developed significantly improved prediction accuracy, with up to 25% better performance in some cases. Last weekend we participated in Java Day Istanbul 2024 as DefineX. There was a clear focus on offering more integrated solutions for developing and quickly deploying applications that incorporate AI functionality as is consistent with the current global trend. Particularly incorporating vectorized embeddings for data storage solutions to take advantage of the ability to query them via cosine similarity and other linear algebra concepts looks like it can see widespread adoption. I would suggest developers to familiarize themselves with such concepts if they are not already. On the Java front, another trend is incorporating more functional programming concepts to the language and a continued call to developers to use existing ones more effectively. However, in light of a recent course I completed on Scala and another one I am currently following on its more advanced features, I am unconvinced the current state of support for FP in Java is where it should be. Scala as another JVM language is more in line with other functional languages and more intuitive to code with than functional style in Java, though it also has its issues with perhaps too much syntactic alternatives for common usages. I would hope Java would be able to see some level of syntactic convergence with Scala where possible but I know making such syntax work in Scala requires heavy lifting under the hood from compiler which may be even more difficult to incorporate to Java. P.S. I have resisted the urge to use ChatGPT to improve this post :)
