FROM ZERO TO HERO: The Glorious Journey of FPT Automotive Can Tho's Embedded Team. ----------------------------- FPT Software Can Tho was established in 2014. After 10 years of development, up to now, FPT Automotive (a subsidiary of FPT Software) has officially formed the largest Embedded team in the Western region. The journey from zero to a formidable team of 30 members was a daunting challenge, yet it was accomplished in just 18 months. This miraculous feat can be attributed to the impressive leadership of Mr. Lam Van Trung – the Technical Leader of the Embedded team at FPT Automotive Can Tho and a Top 100 GAM honoree in 2023 (GAM - Global Automotive & Manufacturing, the predecessor of FPT Automotive). Had noticed more and more BYD cars on the streets of Tokyo recently. I would imagine they will overtake Tesla fairly soon. From the Nikkei article ⬇️ BYD Auto Japan, which currently has 55 dealers in Japan, intends to increase the number of dealerships to 90 by the end of 2024 and 100 by 2025. Since entering the Japanese market in January 2023, the company has sold 2,500 passenger cars, Tofukuji said. There are still few EVs on the road in Japan. Hybrid vehicles built by Toyota Motor, Honda Motor, and Nissan account for most eco-friendly vehicles in the country. According to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA), EVs made up 1.7% of all registered vehicles, which does not include kei minicars, in 2023. Hybrids account for 55.1% of the total, and gasoline-powered cars 35.8%. From January to May, BYD had 832 registrations of imported passenger vehicles, almost double the number from the same period in 2023, according to data from the Japan Automobile Importers Association (JAIA). That was close to the 994 EV registrations Toyota had during the same period, JADA's and JAIA's data show. Thailand Automotive : The Big Issue CANNOT Solve It Alone 🚗 📉 The report on Oct-2024 just said Thailand car selling -25% from Q1/2024. Due to high-debt and strictly financing, press the demand event worse. From the production site, we run on a low production capacity more than a year. Stimulate Demand by Subsidy?, Tax exemption? etc. This big issue cannot be solve with the one holy grail, but needs more synergy from GOV, All Car supply chain, till Financial policy to fix it in a long term and transform our automotive sector to be better. Although there are some who object to plugin hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), preferring to go the full BEV route, I believe that PHEVs still have a place in the #electricvehicle ecosystem. This is ably demonstrated by Garry’s experience with the first #BYD Sea Lion 06 sold in #Queensland. In short, he drives it like a BEV — as it is designed to do. Garry attended our “Coffee, Cake and EVs” morning and I was keen to hear his story. In shopping for his first EV, Garry only had a choice of two — it was either the unknown #Chinese brand “Build Your Dreams” (BYD) or the established #Japanese brand #Mitsubishi. A Sea Lion 06 or an Outlander. Checking out the specs and the prices, it was an easy choice. He found that the technology and consumption for both cars were similar. They both get 1.5 L of petrol consumption per 100 km driven, with about 90 km of battery range on a full charge. He drove them both and found that they had the “same amount of grunt.” They were both well able to meet his driving and towing needs. But what a price difference! The Mitsubishi would have set the veteran pensioner back AU$75,000, while he purchased the Sea Lion 06 for just AU$48,000. That’s a AU$27,000difference. He could have got himself another vehicle! Majella and I test drove the Sea Lion 06 when it launched in June. You can read about it here. Of course, it is better to talk to someone with the real-world experience of driving the vehicle for a few months. Because of his war service pension, Garry doesn’t pay the Federal Goods and Services Tax or Stamp Duty. This saved him about $7,000. Garry served in #Vietnam. BYD cars are actually becoming a common sight around #Brisbane. Garry tells me: “I was seeing these BYDs around town, then there was more and more so I googled it and thought ‘Shit this is a good car.’” Garry went to his nearest sales centre and put $1000 down even though they didn’t have one in stock yet. Sight unseen, no test drive. He got to do a test drive two weeks later at the BYD drive day at the end of June. I asked him about the sales experience. “The salesman was a young kid just starting out.” So many are in this rapidly expanding field. You’ve got to learn fast. Garry says he has learnt most of the information he needed from dedicated #Facebook pages. “I learn something new everyday!” BYD Sea Lion 06. At that time Garry says he knew “bugger all.” By the time he did the test drive, Garry’s mind was made up. Though, he would have preferred a longer test drive on the open road. He was impressed with the information on the BYD website that stated the economy of the vehicle. “When I leave home to go to #Ipswich, I have the battery on 100%. I can get there and back and it costs me nothing.” Garry drives his #PHEV like a #BEV!

This strategic maneuver comes hot on the heels of the recent launch of BYD's inaugural manufacturing facility in Rayong province, Thailand. The newly established plant, tailor-made for the production of right-hand drive vehicles, boasts an annual manufacturing capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles and will also fabricate crucial components such as batteries and transmissions. This collaboration aims to elevate the competitive edge of both companies within the electric vehicle sector. Leveraging Thailand's tax incentives to augment its electric vehicle production, BYD, in collaboration with Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., is positioning itself for an upsurge in EV output. Despite its modest 130-mile range, the VF3 has garnered a record number of orders, highlighting its popularity and the effective strategies employed by VinFast. Record-Breaking Launch Within just 66 hours of its commercial launch, the VinFast VF3 received 27,649 non-refundable and non-transferable pre-orders. This remarkable achievement sets a new record for any new car in Vietnam, according to VinFast, the manufacturer of the VF3 and VF8. Effective Marketing Strategy To achieve this result, VinFast leveraged both an online reservation page and multiple e-commerce platforms in Vietnam. This extensive online presence made it easy for internet users to find and engage with the pre-order process, contributing significantly to the high number of orders. Skepticism and Previous Criticisms It's important to note that VinFast has faced criticism regarding its order statistics. In 2023, Barron’s reported that a significant portion of VinFast's sales were internal, primarily to a taxi subsidiary of its parent company, Vingroup. While the VF3's launch suggests strong interest from private buyers, some skepticism remains about the true distribution of these orders. Compact Dimensions and Interior Space The VinFast VF3 is a small EV, measuring just 125.6 inches in length, 66.1 inches in width, and 63.8 inches in height. Despite its compact size, it offers seating for four people and a cargo capacity of 19.42 cubic feet with the rear bench folded. For context, the BMW i3, with a larger battery, had an NEDC-rated range of 223 miles but only 153 miles on the EPA cycle—a 68% difference. "BYD makes US$1,250 profit per car [...]" If my sources are correct, then the latest direct annual subsidies from the Chinese Government in 2023 for BYD amounted to a dazzling ~US$2,270,000,000. With a total of 3,024,417 units sold last year, this reduces the above effective profitability per car by another US$750 to only five Benjamins...
