#HumanRightsDay 💞 Manushya Foundation received the 2024 Human Rights Tulip Award from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Thailand! 💕On the 3rd December 2024, the Manushya team received the Human Rights Tulip Award at the Netherlands Embassy in Bangkok. It was a humbling reminder and motivation for us to keep doing the work for our communities as well as with ourselves. 🌷The #HumanRightsTulip is awarded to appreciate the work of organizations and individuals supporting human rights movements. Manushya was recognised for our work to support and amplify movements in Thailand and Laos. Ambassador Remco van Wijngaarden described Manushya as “an organization that has, excuse my English, a lot of balls.” We accept this commendation in the most intersectional feminist sense possible, and want to thank our wonderful, fierce team once again for the ways in which we have stood alongside each other, even in spite of setbacks, and celebrate our achievements. 🌼The ceremony was then followed by a powerful screening of the film ‘Who’s Afraid of Nathan Law’ and the Hong Kong Umbrella Revolution. The film was also a profound reminder to us about the interconnectedness of our global movements, which we will continue to learn more about and stand in solidarity with. ✊We want to extend our deepest thanks to the Dutch Embassy and everyone, from our team to our broader community, for all the support you have provided in resources, engagement, and morale. We appreciate it deeply, especially as a small organization that is beyond perfect and still growing. We thus dedicate this award to our whole broader community - this is a celebration of you too. #ThankYouGisele #MeToo 🫶 #GiselePelicot has shifted the direction of shame ✊ She’s the brave courageous woman who told the world « La honte doit changer de camp | Shame must change sides » 🫶 #TheirShameNotOurs We’re ending this year with a historical verdict in the mass rape trial, as French justice has decided to hold accountable a man who thought he could get away with a decade of sexual abuses. Dominique Pelicot, who drugged his ex-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, then handed her over to dozens of strangers for their pleasure, has been sentenced to the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. "Dazed", Dominique isn't ruling out an appeal, according to his lawyer. Don’t worry though, he’ll have plenty of time to reflect—two-thirds of his sentence is without parole. Fifty other men were also sentenced. Every single one of the 51 defendants was found guilty—not a single acquittal! From a few years behind bars to up to 15, they’ll now face the consequences of their horrific actions. ✊ Let’s be clear: this post is not about that despicable individual. This post is about Gisèle Pelicot, a woman who has already endured more than anyone ever should. She should have been allowed to heal, to rest, to live a life free from the weight of what she suffered. Instead, Gisèle showed the world an incredible courage and resilience. She didn’t just survive her nightmare—she made sure it wasn’t forgotten. Despite every obstacle, she shared her story and made sure the world saw it. She turned her pain into a force that shook the world, proving that women will no longer be silenced. If justice exists in this case, it’s because of women like her. 🙏 Gisèle, you’ve shown us all what it means to rise, to fight, and to never let anyone steal your voice again. We wish you the best for what comes next, because too often, the victims are forgotten once the verdict is given. But the pain, the scars, the consequences—those stay. 🛑 STOP #TransnationalRepression & Deportation of Cambodian refugees! 🚨In a powerful article published in The Diplomat, David Whitehouse uncovers Thailand’s glaring human rights failings as it commits transnational repression in support of the Cambodian authoritarian regime and forcibly deported six Cambodian activists. This deportation, carried out despite the explicit protections enshrined in Thailand’s Anti-Torture Act of 2023, constitutes refoulement—a violation of both domestic law and international human rights principles. 🗣️ Emilie Palamy Pradichit, Founder & Executive Director of the Manushya Foundation ♾ #WeAreManushyan, strongly condemned the act: “Thailand has carried out a blatant violation of both Thai and international law,” she said. Section 13 of the Act, she added, “is a clear commitment to protect individuals from refoulement,” making this deportation a stark betrayal of the country’s own legal framework. 🇺🇳 These actions cast a shadow over Thailand’s upcoming term on the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), set to begin in January 2025. As a member of the HRC, Thailand will be expected to uphold the very principles it has violated—raising pressing questions about its suitability for such a role. 🫂 Solidarity means demanding accountability. The deportation of these six activists exposes the gap between Thailand’s commitments and actions. 🌍 On this International Migrant Day, we stand with migrant domestic workers who face the dual struggle of labor rights violations and climate change. In the ASEAN region, millions are being displaced by storms, floods, and droughts, forcing many to leave their homes in search of safety and a better life. Yet, migrant domestic workers—who are primarily women—continue to endure poor wages, unsafe living conditions, and legal challenges. #EndViolenceAgainstSexWorkers ✊ Protecting Digital Safety and Empowerment 💻 In today’s digital age, online platforms offer sex workers a vital space for safety, autonomy, and control. Digital tools allow workers to screen clients, negotiate terms, and protect their privacy—minimizing physical risks and reducing reliance on exploitative intermediaries. These platforms provide a lifeline, enabling sex workers to connect with clients globally, access support, and build solidarity within their communities. 🚫 But this freedom is under threat. Laws like FOSTA-SESTA in the U.S. and restrictive local regulations in Thailand force sex workers offline, exposing them to violence, surveillance, and loss of financial security. Digital spaces must remain safe for sex workers to protect their rights, privacy, and livelihoods. 🛑 This December 17th, stand up for the digital safety of sex workers. Advocate for secure online spaces, oppose censorship, and support laws that protect workers’ rights. #Laos 🇱🇦#WhereIsSombath?🚨While Laos is busy finding new activists and human rights defenders to terrorise, kill, torture, imprison, and arrest, there’s still one name that demands to be said—especially today—and will keep being said as long as it’s needed. Sombath Somphone. Twelve years have passed since his enforced disappearance, and yet, the Lao government continues to ignore the truth his family deserves. They've had more than a decade to come up with something resembling accountability, but apparently, silence and lies are still their go-to strategies. 🙏🏽 Sombath Somphone was a pioneer in community-based development and youth empowerment in Laos. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of marginalised communities, focusing on sustainable development, education, and environmental conservation. But instead of honoring his work, the Lao government decided his ideas were too much of a threat. On December 15, 2012, Sombath was abducted in broad daylight and his fate remains unknown. The Lao elites hoped the world would forget about Sombath. But what they didn’t realise is that by trying to erase him, they only made his name a symbol of hope, change, and the relentless fight for justice. His truth is no longer something they can bury, no matter how hard they try to hide it. It lives on, louder than ever. When people talk about the Lao government, one question will always come up: Where is Sombath? ✊🏽 We believe 12 years is more than enough time for the authorities to get their act together and conduct a proper investigation. However, aside from the fact that many #GlobalMajority cultures celebrate New Years’ differently, the reality is that we can start working towards our goals any time of the year. We challenge ourselves to start working towards our goals now - who needs the 1st January to start chasing our dreams? 🤲It has been a momentous year for global movements towards justice and equity for all.
