In recent times, we often hear the phrase, "Various sectors in Thailand are accelerating the adoption of AI in their work." But a more intriguing question is: Is this truly happening? And how skilled are Thai workers today in utilizing AI? These insights are drawn from Dr. Karndee Leopairote, Chief Advisor of Futures Studies at FutureTales LAB by MQDC, who shared knowledge and research findings from FutureTales Lab at The Standard Economic Forum 2024: Brave New World under the topic, "AI Upskill: Preparing the Workforce for Tomorrow". In an era where AI is playing a pivotal role across all sectors of society, Thailand has seen a significant rise in the awareness and adoption of AI within organizations. Statistics from 2024 highlight that the primary goals of adopting AI are to enhance organizational efficiency, deepen customer engagement, and create new value. However, for organizations eager to adopt AI but unable to do so, challenges include unclear organizational policies, insufficient employee readiness, and budget constraints. According to a survey conducted by Microsoft and LinkedIn on employer perspectives, organizations were asked about their willingness to hire employees with no AI knowledge but with work experience. The results showed that 90% of organizations in Thailand prioritize AI-related skills over work experience. This is because experience can be developed over time, whereas AI skills are seen as essential from the outset. Interestingly, Thai organizations place a higher emphasis on AI skills than the global average. Looking deeper into the proficiency of Thai workers in utilizing AI, the data reveals a striking contrast. Although over 90% of employees in Thailand use AI in their work, fewer than 30% can leverage AI to its full potential, a figure significantly below the global average. This highlights that while Thai workers are capable of basic AI usage, their ability to utilize AI at a deeper level to create meaningful value remains limited. AI usage is no longer confined to office workers but has extended across various segments of the workforce. Each segment faces unique challenges in adopting AI, such as: Accessibility for older workers, whose numbers are rapidly increasing but who face barriers to using AI and related technologies. Competition and accountability for younger generations, who are more attuned to AI but may face ethical challenges in its usage. Inequities in technology access and quality data, particularly for SMEs and agricultural sectors. These challenges underscore the need for stakeholders to intervene and provide appropriate solutions to prepare the Thai workforce across all sectors for a future driven by technology. "How will AI change education?" 4 scenarios may occur in Thai education in the "AI awakening era". Do we use AI or does AI use us? Let’s look at these 4 scenarios for preparing to enter the labor market. "AI Upskill: Preparing the Workforce for Tomorrow, Artificial Intelligence Transforming the Workforce into the Future" is a topic that Dr. Karndee Leopairote, Chief Foresight Officer at FutureTales Lab by MQDC, discussed at The Standard: Economic Forum 2024 "Brave New World". AI is rapidly playing a role in all sectors and Thai workers are realizing its value for convenience, efficiency, and competitiveness in the rapidly changing labor market. Education is key to preparing to enter the labor market and adapt to AI. The AI skill of Thailand's future workforce is an issue to consider. FutureTales Lab's research points out 4 possible scenarios in the era of AI boom, which will reflect different outcomes in terms of developing labor potential. Education creates slaves - When AI becomes popular and we become over-reliant, learners may neglect critical thinking and become slaves to the use of technology without discerning what is appropriate, which may lead to paying for improved outcomes without control. Education creates doubts - Rapidly acquiring technology and information without assessing its appropriateness for the Thai context may cause doubts or confusion in the use of AI that is not in line with the country's development. Artificial Intelligence learning - Learners can understand and use AI comprehensively, use it to overcome their own weaknesses, increase learning efficiency, and develop skills rationally. Learning to be human - Learners use AI to develop creativity, enhance potential in various aspects by maintaining human values in terms of ethics, empathy, and mutual understanding. In conclusion, the adaptation of the workforce and education system in the AI era will be an important factor that determines the future of the Thai labor market. [#FutureofWork] [#WellBeing]: Businesses around the world are embracing the concept of a purpose-driven organization, especially in terms of a positive work culture and the well-being of their employees. A McKinsey report found that employee performance can rise 33% if employees feel that their work is meaningful, with 75% of staff feeling engaged with the organization and a 40-57% reduction in the chance of leaving. After the COVID crisis, 82% of employees said their organizations should announce clear goals and directions and value employees. But only 45% of staff feel this about their organizations. Demographic change plays a key role in making organizations purpose-driven. Generations Y and Z, the majority of the workforce, value values and goals more than just working for money. 83% of Gen Y are more loyal to their organization if it helps them solve social and environmental problems. Many retirees keep working if they find meaning in their work. Working without purpose, meanwhile, is also related to the Quiet Quitting phenomenon in the United States and the Lying Flat phenomenon in China. Having a clear organizational purpose also drives engagement, increases productivity, and reduces turnover. Losing high-potential employees amid the global talent shortage is expected to cost organizations $8.5 trillion by 2030. But organizations must ensure that their goals are realistic and aligned with their products or services. Aligning with environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) practices is important because today’s employees and job seekers, especially Gen Y and younger, expect organizations to demonstrate tangible sustainability issues. But 49% of HR leaders lack a clear strategic plan for this issue. Implications for the future: - Fostering an organization driven by sincere and serious goals is essential for employee well-being and organizational success. - Accepting and adapting to societal changes will be a key factor in retaining existing high-potential workers and recruiting talent.
