Known issues with Google Meet

Tip: If you're an administrator, reference Google Workspace known issues.

Prompt shows up when I present or record in meetings on macOS Sequoia

If you've recently updated to macOS Sequoia, you’ll receive a cautionary prompt when you first attempt to record a meeting or share your screen.

Here’s what you can do:

  • To allow Google Chrome to access your screen:
    • When you start a presentation or recording in a meeting, in the dialog, click Allow.
  • If you missed the initial dialog to allow permissions, you’ll need to update your system settings.

Alternatively, to test the new frictionless experience:

  1. Update Chrome to version 129 or up.
  2. On your Mac, open the Terminal.
  3. Enter: open -b com.google.Chrome --args --enable-features=UseSCContentSharingPicker.
  4. To execute the command, on your keyboard, press Enter.
  5. Optional: Enable the flag in Chrome.
    1. In the address bar, enter: chrome://flags.
    2. Search for the flag “Use ScreenCaptureKit picker for stream selection.”
    3. Next to the flag, click the Down arrow and then Enabled.
    4. Restart Chrome.

Tip: To avoid this issue, you can delay the update to macOS Sequoia until macOS 15.1 releases.

Fix “Meet can’t use your camera” issue on Chrome

You might get the error message “Meet can't use your camera” even if you give Chrome access to the camera when you use Google Meet.

Tip: If the camera works in other applications and also works for Meet on other browsers, the issue could be with Google Meet in Chrome.

To fix this issue, enable one or both of these Chrome experiments:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. In the address bar, enter:
    • chrome://flags/#zero-copy-video-capture
    • chrome://flags/#enable-media-foundation-video-capture
  1. Next to the flag, click the Down arrow and then Enabled.
  2. Restart Chrome.

Why am I seeing Reactions when I didn't click anything?

If you're using a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, your device may have Apple Reactions turned on by default on iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. When Reactions are turned on, emoji can appear on a video call when the participant uses a qualifying hand gesture in front of the camera.

To turn this feature on or off:

  1. During a video call or meeting, go to the Control Center of your device (Mac, iPhone, iPad).
    • On an iPhone or iPad, swipe down from the top-right edge.
    • On a Mac, select the Video icon in the Mac menu bar.
  2. Open the Video Effects menu and then Select Reactions.

Content presented on Windows computers from a window appears mirrored

Content of windows in a right-to-left language (e.g. Hebrew, Arabic, Fasri, Urdu) appears mirrored or missing when presented in Google Meet on some Windows computers.

A fix for this issue is in progress. In the meantime, you can share a tab or the full screen, which will appear correctly. If you need to share a window, follow these steps to have your content show up correctly:

Share a window
  1. Make sure Chrome is up to date - follow Update Google Chrome.
  2. Open a new Chrome tab.
  3. Copy this address and paste it in the address bar: chrome://flags/#webrtc-allow-wgc-window-capturer
    • You can use Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V to copy and paste.
  4. Press Enter.
  5. This will show the Chrome flags page, with "Use Windows WGC API for window capture" highlighted.
  6. Click "Default" and change it to "Enabled".
  7. Click "Relaunch" on the bottom right corner of the page.
  8. You can now use Google Meet and share windows as normal.

Issues with noise cancellation if you use an electrolarynx

We recommend you turn off noise cancellation in Meet if you use an electrolarynx. Accessibility improvements are in progress in Meet. Learn how to turn off noise cancellation.

I can't join Meet meetings on my dual-SIM Phone

We suggest you turn off the second SIM or switch to Wi-Fi.

Inactive meetings with a single participant end automatically

If you're the only participant in a meeting, after 10 minutes of inactivity, you get a notification to end or stay in the meeting. If you don't respond within 2 minutes, the meeting automatically ends.

If you don't want your meetings to automatically end, go to Settings and turn off this feature.

On a computer

Important: Once inside a meeting, follow these steps:

  1. On the bottom bar, select More Options and then Settings .
  2. Select General.
  3. Turn off Leave Empty Calls .
On an iOS device

Important: These steps can only be followed before you join a meeting:

For consumers

  1. On your iOS device, open the Google Meet app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings and then Meeting settings.
  4. Turn off Leave Empty Calls.

For Business or EDU

  1. On your iOS device, open the Google Meet app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings and then General.
  4. Turn off Leave Empty Calls.
On an Android device

Important: These steps can only be followed before you join a meeting:

For consumers

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Meet app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings and then Meeting settings.
  4. Turn off Leave Empty Calls.

For Business or EDU

  1. On your Android device, open the Google Meet app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings and then General.
  4. Turn off Leave Empty Calls.

For education meetings, attempts to join from outside the domain won't work for some participants

Only the meeting creator can approve or deny requests to join a meeting from participants outside of their domain. If the meeting creator isn't on the call when the request is made, the external participant can’t join. The "Ask to join" page will stall.

Tip: If you create a meeting that includes guests with an email address outside of your school domain, stay on the call until all guests join.

Important: For meetings organized via a personal Google account, only the meeting creator can admit people into the meeting.

For meetings organized by Essentials accounts, anyone outside of the organization will have to be admitted into the meeting.

Drop-down menus are not shown when you share a window

When you share a window in Meet, the drop-down menus in the shared window don’t display in the meeting.

Tip: Share your entire screen instead of a specific window.

Browser freezes when you try to share a screen

If a computer uses incompatible video adapters or video drivers, it can cause browser issues.

Tip: Update the computer's video adapters and video drivers to the latest version.

Presentations open blank or distorted when you share a window

When you share a window in Meet, such as a Microsoft PowerPoint or Keynote presentation, the slideshow opens blank to other viewers. Presentations in 'Play' or 'Slide Show view' open in full screen mode, but you share only a window.

Tip: Share your whole screen before you open a presentation in Play or Slide Show mode.

I can't open Meet on my mobile device

Each version of the mobile Meet app is supported for 6 months after release. Update to the latest version if an older version of the app is installed on your device.

Dial-in call ends unexpectedly

Important: This feature is available for meetings created through a Google Workspace account.

Meet supports dial-in phone calls for up to 8 hours. The maximum call length is shorter if there are carrier-specific restrictions.

Tip: When the call is dropped after 8 hours, dial back in to the meeting.

I can't schedule an "All Day" meeting

When you add a room to an all-day event, the room is scheduled in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). UTC is from midnight to midnight the next day, regardless of the room's time zone. You may notice the meeting room shows as unavailable, even if it’s available. Google is aware of this issue.

Tip: When you add a meeting room in a different time zone, schedule the event for 24 hours instead of selecting “All day.”

If Meet is temporarily unavailable or you have performance issues

If Meet is unavailable, you experience issues such as poor video, trouble when you want to join a meeting, or other Meet performance issues, check the Google Workspace Status Dashboard. Meet service issues are listed, such as:

  • Green icon—Meet is operating normally. Use the troubleshooting tips to address your specific issue.
  • Yellow or red icon— Meet is experiencing issues or is unavailable. Try the following workarounds for ways to communicate until Meet returns to normal operation.

Tip: Pre-record your meeting or lecture

Important: Recording video meetings is only available for meetings organized by certain Google Workspace editions.

If Meet is not available, use another screen recording app to record the session with your local computer. Then share the recording with your team or class.

If Meet works for you but other participants have trouble, you can record your session in Meet. You can record even if others don’t join. Ask your Google Workspace admin to make sure Meet recording is turned on for your organization. Wait for the recording file to be generated and saved to the organizer’s Meet Recordings folder in My Drive. An email with the recording link is sent to the meeting organizer, and to the person who started the recording.

Tip: Live stream the meeting using Meet

You can conduct a Meet live-stream session even if other interactive features are unavailable. A live-stream allows you to broadcast your meeting to large groups of coworkers or students in real time.

Only guests in the same organization as the meeting organizer can view a live-stream. Guests in other organizations cannot view your live-stream.

Note: Your Google Workspace administrator must turn on live-streaming. The meeting organizer must also create an extra view-only event for the live-stream.
