Change Gmail notifications

You can choose how Gmail notifies you when you get new emails. The types of notifications you can customize depends on your device.

Check your device notification settings

Important:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu and then Settings and then General settings.
  3. Tap Manage notifications.
  4. Turn All Gmail notifications on or off.
    • You can also customize the types of notifications that you receive on your device.

If you have multiple accounts in the Gmail app, you need to change this setting for each account.

Turn on notifications

By default, notifications are turned on for any messages in your Primary label.

Choose your Gmail notification settings

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Select your account.
  5. Under “Notifications,” tap Email notifications.
  6. Choose the types of email notifications you want to receive.

Change notification settings for certain labels

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Select your account.
  5. Tap Manage labels.
  6. Tap one of your labels, like Important.
  7. Tap Sync messages and then Last 30 days or All. If you don't sync messages, you can't turn on notifications for that label.
  8. Choose your notification settings for that label. Repeat this for any labels you want to get notifications for.
 
Get notified for just high priority emails

You can limit your notifications to only high priority emails.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Tap your account.
  4. Tap Email notifications and then select High priority only.

Tip: High priority emails will override any other notifications settings you've made for certain labels.

Turn email notification sounds on or off
  1. Open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Select your account.
  4. Under “Notifications,'' tap Notification sounds
  5. Under “Email” or "Chat and spaces," tap Notification sound and then Sound.
  6. Choose the notification sound you want to use.
  7. To turn off notification sounds, tap None.
Turn on notifications for Meet only

This will allow you to turn on notifications to easily get back to your ongoing meeting, such as when you're in another app

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings .
  4. Select your account.
  5. Tap Manage notifications.
  6. You will be taken to the Gmail system settings, where you can then turn on notifications for Gmail.
Turn off notifications
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Select your account.
  5. Tap Email notifications and then select None.

I'm not getting any notifications

If you don't see your notifications, follow the steps above to turn on notifications. If that doesn't help, try these steps:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. In the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Select your account.
  5. Make sure the box next to "Sync Gmail" is checked.
