Add topics to the Classwork page

This article is for teachers.

You can group assignments, quiz assignments, questions, and class materials under topics. If you don’t assign a topic, the post shows at the top of the Classwork page. You can reorder the posts under a topic and rearrange topics to follow your curriculum. Students only see topics that have published posts.

Create a topic

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]Learn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. At the top, click Createand thenTopic.
  4. Enter the topic name and click Add.

Add a topic to assignments, quiz assignments, or questions

You can add only one topic to an assignment, quiz assignment, or question. If an assignment is posted to several classes, editing the assignment in one class doesn't update it in the other classes.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]Learn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork
  3. Next to the assignment, quiz assignment, or question, click More and thenEdit.
  4. Next to No topic, click the Down arrow  and choose an option:
    • To create a topic, click Create topic and enter a topic name.
    • To select a topic in the list, click the topic name.

  5. Click Save.

Add a topic to class materials

You can add only one topic per post. For details on creating class materials, go to Add materials to the Classwork page.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]Learn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork
  3. Next to the class material, click More and thenEdit.
  4.  Next to No topic, click the Down arrow  and choose an option:
    • To create a topic, click Create topic and enter a topic name.
    • To select a topic in the list, click the topic name.

  5. Click Save.

Filter by topic 

You can see all your posts for a topic and quickly move between topics with the topic filters.
  1. In a class, click Classwork.
  2. To see all your posts for a topic, at the left, click a topic name.
  3. To return to all your topics, at the left, click All topics.

Reorder topics

 If you’re using a mobile device, click Android or iPhone & iPad above for instructions. 

When you move a topic, all its content also moves. Only teachers can reorder topics.   

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]Learn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork
  3. If it's not already selected, on the left, click All topics.
  4. Choose an option:
    • Click anywhere on the topicand thendrag it up or down.
    • Next to the topic name, click More and thenMove up or Move down.

Reorder posts under a topic

 If you’re using a mobile device, click Android or iPhone & iPad above for instructions. 

You can change the order of assignments, materials, and other work under the same topic. Only teachers can reorder the posts under a topic. 

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]Learn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork
  3. If it's not already selected, on the left, click All topics.
  4. Choose an option:
    • Click anywhere on the postand thendrag it up or down.
    • Next to the post name, click More and thenMove up or Move down.

Rename a topic

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]Learn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. Next to the topic name, click More and thenRename.
  4. Enter a new name and click Rename.

Delete a topic

Deleting a topic doesn’t delete the posts under it. Posts move to the top of the list on the Classwork page.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]Learn more.

  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. Next to the topic name, click More and thenDelete.
  4. Click Delete to confirm.
