Translate pages and change Chrome languages

You can use Chrome to translate pages. You can also change your preferred language in Chrome.

Translate pages in Chrome

You can use Chrome to translate a page into other languages.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Go to a page you want to translate.
  3. In the notification at the top of the screen, tap the language that you want to translate the page to.
    • To change the default language:
      1. Tap Settings Settings and then More languages.
      2. Select the language.
    • To always translate pages in this language, tap Settings Settings and then Always translate pages in [language].

Not working? Try refreshing the page. If you still can't tap Translate, the language might not be available for translation.

If you don’t find a Translate notification at the top of your screen, you can request a translation.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More and then Translate.

Tip: If you want to translate a language from your list, tap the language and select Offer to translate.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. Go to a page you want to translate.
  3. Highlight the text that you want to translate.
  4. At the bottom, a translation of that word or phrase will appear.
  5. To get more information, tap the translation.
Tip: To play back text in a text-to-speech supported language, tap Listen Listen.

Change your default page translation settings

You can use Chrome to translate pages based on your preferred language settings.

Change your default language

Select the language Chrome will translate the page into.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome .
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Languages and then Advanced .
  4. Tap Translate into this language.
  5. From the language list, select the language you want.

Add, reorder, or remove your preferred languages

Pages in more than one language show your preferred language first.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Settings and then Languages.
  3. Under "Preferred languages," tap Add language.
  4. Tap the language you want to add.
  5. To reorder languages, drag them to the place you want.
  6. To remove a language, next to the language you want to remove tap More More and then Remove.

Turn translation on or off

You can control when Chrome offers to translate pages.

To turn all translations for all pages on or off:

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Languages.
  4. Under "Translation settings," turn on or off Offer to send pages in other languages to Google Translate.

Manage "never translate" language list

Control which languages Chrome won't offer to translate.
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Languages and then Advanced .
  4. Tap Don’t offer to translate these languages.
  5. To add a language, tap Add language and select the language to never translate.
  6. To remove a language, next to the language you want to remove tap More More and then Remove.

Manage "always translate" language list

Control which languages Chrome automatically translates.
  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Languages and then Advanced .
  4. Tap Automatically translate these languages.
  5. To add a language, tap Add language and select the language to always translate.
  6. To remove a language, next to the language you want to remove tap More More and then Remove.

Change the language of Chrome

You can choose the default language of your Chrome app's menus and settings.

  1. On your Android device, open Chrome Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Settings and then Languages.
  3. Under “Chrome’s language,” tap the current language.
  4. From the list, select the language you want.
  5. After the language downloads, in the toolbar, tap Restart.

When you find “Language ready” under your new language, the download is complete.
