gov Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties Hampton Roads District is seeking a highly motivated professional to successfully manage and complete preliminary geotechnical engineering activities for all district construction/maintenance projects to include development of subsurface investigation programs to meet project design needs such as soil surveys, major/minor structure foundation investigations, slope stability/embankment foundation and pavement evaluations/investigations.
You will evaluate, analyze and incorporate subsurface investigation data into appropriate design recommendations for pavements, major/minor structures, embankment foundations and slope stability resolutions; and provide technical assistance to construction field staff for resolution of geotechnical and pavement related issues that arise during construction.
Position will monitor and track workload and provide monthly summary to supervisor; and provide construction engineering support to VDOT, county, state and consultant staff.
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of construction practices, geotechnical engineering principles/practices, and soils and aggregates as construction materials.
Ability to establish engineering design parameters from subsurface investigations and use in design/analysis of pavements, structure foundations, embankment foundations and slopes; to successfully convey recommendations to project development teams both orally and in writing; and to read/interpret engineering plans.
Also requires ability to monitor workloads and establish work plans to complete work within established deadlines; to supervise and manage personnel; to communicate and provide technical guidance and instruction to others; and to read and understand plan and contract documents.
Skill in use of computers and applicable software applications.
Experience in engineering principles and practices relating to design; and in applying materials principles/practices related to highway design, construction and maintenance.
Valid driver’s license required.
Additional Considerations A combination of training, experience or education in Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, or related field desired.
Knowledge of VDOT specifications, standards, programs, procedures and policies related to construction and maintenance use of materials.
Proficiency in navigation and use of web-based systems needed to perform the job.
