Survivors of sexual assault may need medical attention for injuries, counseling and mental health support, and assistance navigating services and reporting options after an assault has occurred. Additionally, preventative medical care may be recommended, as outlined by the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
- Antimicrobial regimen (antibiotics are available)
- Emergency contraception
- Hepatitis B postexposure prophylaxis (if the hepatitis status of the assailant is unknown and the survivor has not been previously vaccinated; this vaccination is typically administered in infants)
- HPV vaccine (brand name Gardasil is available)
- HIV postexposure prophylaxis (prescription for PEP is available)
These medical care services are all available through USC Student Health; prescription fulfillment is available through local pharmacies including the USC Pharmacies.
Individuals who have experienced sexual assault are encouraged to contact a Confidential Advocate in Confidential Advocacy, Resources, and Education — Support Center–they can be reached 24/7 at 213-740-9355, or via secure message in the MySHR portal. Advocates can arrange transport and accompaniment to a SART center for evidence collection, and also discuss options for accommodations, reporting, and after care mental health support services.
