As a dominican, the idiosyncrasy that attracts me in dembow is the unforgiving irreverence in its performance and messaging. The Dominican Republic is a deeply conservative country, where any expressions that defy the ruling hegemony are silenced, criticized and deterred.

Breakcore and Jungle seemed like obvious choices for the next sounds I wanted to play with. Intense, physical, playful, built on sampling, clad with bass, and stemming from a long tradition of counter-culture. These sounds melded perfectly with dembow’s aesthetic and spirit, which is present in the samples used in the EP.

Tokischa, Haraca Kiko, Playero…with their lyrics of excessive horniness, defiance to haters, gritty portrayals of street life and a good dose of laughter…represent a primary form of revolution, where we discard old limiting values, whilst having a good time.

Add to this a touch of rage, conveyed in the elevated BPMs and overall manic ferocity in these songs. Rage that moves forward all of this musical universe…rage directed at those who look to judge and oppress, rage because we grew up in spaces where expressing oneself was condemned, rage because our existence was deemed questionable.
