Every career I venture into, there must be a meaningful purpose. For Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I had close to 7 years in that health category and continues to monitor its trends. It was very meaningful to help customers with their health issues. TCM has a history that spans millennia, embodying the wisdom of ancient Chinese philosophy and practices. Among its stalwarts is Beijing Tongrentang, founded in 1669 and once the exclusive supplier of herbal medicine to the imperial pharmacy during the Qing dynasty. Metta Pracharak Hospital Provides Guidelines for Safe Contact Lens Use 📍 Bangkok, Thailand — Dr. Pairoj Surattanawanich, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services Thailand, has issued important guidelines for the safe use of contact lenses, particularly those used for cosmetic purposes. This announcement comes in response to the growing popularity of decorative contact lenses among students, teenagers, working individuals, and adults. The ease of availability and low cost of these lenses have contributed to their widespread use. Dr. Surattanawanich emphasized that the practice of sharing contact lenses or purchasing second-hand lenses online is hazardous and should be avoided. Such behaviors significantly increase the risk of eye infections and other complications. Dr. Arkom Chaiwerawattana, Director of Metta Pracharak Hospital (Rai Khing), highlighted that contact lenses are personal items and should not be shared with others. Sharing contact lenses can lead to corneal abrasions, corneal and conjunctival inflammation, and infections transmitted through tears. He strongly advises individuals to consult with an ophthalmologist to obtain properly fitting contact lenses and receive guidance on their correct usage and maintenance. Dr. Vatookarn Roongpoovapatr, a specialist at the hospital, added that annual eye exams are essential for contact lens users to ensure proper fitting and eye health. I don't often get a chance to garner insights into the Chinese digital health market, so I'm glad I came across this article that provides an interesting but less than up-beat look into this market. Keep in mind that the evolution of parts of the digital health space in China, like the telemedicine sector, was a million miles ahead of the west with companies like Good Doctor running huge telemedicine businesses as early as 2016 - 2017. So despite the lead in the digital health space companies in this market are running into one problem haunting their western counterparts, which is how to make money in the digital health space. A number of the bigger players overcame the scale and path-to-market problem, but still can't overcome the profitability hurdle. There is a lot to un-pack in the article. The takeaway that caught my attention the most was the interesting observation that digital health companies like telemedicine and online booking companies will struggle to make money if they are trying to find value in only the entry point to the healthcare process. All healthcare providers make money through the provision of specialist and other services, and not at the starting point of the process. So despite different geography, cultural nuisances and varied healthcare systems the digital health challenge remains the same; how to build and sell something that people want to pay for or someone is willing to reimburse and then figure out how to deployed it in a sustainable scalable manner.

I meet a lot of high achievers in my practice whose life motto is a version "Work hard, play hard, I'll sleep when I die". They usually come to me with symptoms of anxiety but the catalyst is often some pain around the neck/shoulders. Using yoga therapy techniques helps to relieve the symptomatic pain but it also allows an access point to examine deeper into the root cause, their mental model that stress equals success and that slowing down means that they will be falling behind. We unpack the concept of 'success' and what reaching their goals will entail, it's agreed that it's a long haul, time, patience and constant effort is required, we need sustainable sources of energy or burnout is around the corner, rest enables us to go further for longer. Think of driving a car (your body) and never stopping to fill up the tank (sleep), eventually it'll be towed away (health issue). And yet Hong Kong has known as one of the world's most sleep deprived regions, with up to half of the population having troubles sleeping. As a society it's important that we change the rhetoric around switching off and giving ourselves time to restore, the science is out on how valuable sleep is, studies have shown insufficient sleep (less than 7 hours a night on average) is associated with health impediments such as: -Decreased immune function, greater chance of catching the common cold -Increased risk of cardiovascular disease, blood chemistry changes showing a spike in triglycerides and higher resting heart rate -Greater propensity of hormonal dysfunction- after 4 days of poor sleep (4.5 hours) insulin rises to levels classified as Type 2 diabetes -Impaired cognitive function- one night of sleep deprivation results in brain function and reaction times that are the same as being legally drunk! -Emotional instability- the charge of fear, worry, irritability, arguments all propel the lack of sleep -Increased susceptibility to Alzheimer's disease, memory recall deteriorates rapidly with chronic sleep deprivation Sleeping less than 6 hours a night is associated with about a 20% higher risk of a heart attack, it's time to reframe relaxation as necessary rather than being lazy. Focus on Revenue Generation Over Fundraising ? ? ? 🚀 Today, I had an enlightening intro call with Mr. Jing Zhi Chua, CEO of ALLWIN. He shared a fascinating perspective that has really resonated with me as a startup advisor and mentor. When discussing fundraising, Jing Zhi Chua posed an insightful question to his team: 🤔 How much time would it take to raise $1-2 million if we gave it our full energy? The answer was 6 months to a year. Then he asked: 🤔 How much time would it take to generate $1-2 million in revenue if we focused all our energy on the business? The answer was also around 9 months to a year. Given that Allwin has a negative customer acquisition cost, they realized that focusing on generating revenue could be equally effective, if not more so, than focusing on raising funds. This approach challenges the conventional wisdom in the startup world where the primary focus is often on fundraising. While raising capital is essential for growth, particularly for certain business models, it’s crucial to consider alternative paths to success. For example, concentrating on business operations and revenue generation for SaaS businesses might lead to profitability faster than extensive fundraising efforts. This mindset shift can be a game-changer. Founders need to evaluate where their focus and energy will yield the best returns. A Natural Approach to Beauty Amidst Health Challenges In the wake of recent events surrounding my eye health, specifically experiencing blurred vision in my left eye, my journey led me to consult with the hospital’s ophthalmologist. Advised to temporarily halt the use of makeup to rule out allergies, I find myself at a crossroads of potential causes: dry eye exacerbated by hemi facial spasms from my brain tumour, makeup allergies, or, worst-case scenario, progression in the growth of my brain tumour, which will soon be investigated through an MRI scan in an expedited follow-up appointment. Taking a cue from Kate’s advice, I’ve embarked on a journey of applying frozen banana skins to my face daily—a simple yet intriguing method. Freezing banana skins as suggested by Kate offers a convenient solution, allowing me to have them readily available whenever needed. The experience is surprisingly pleasant, resembling the sensation of moisturising with a thick lotion.
