We are at the forefront of scientific advancements and are living longer, but we must consider the implications of longer lifespans on healthcare sustainability. It is crucial for payers and providers to collaborate effectively. We cannot have payers withholding payments or providers merely delivering services without thought to overall value. The World Health Organization and our recent commitment to the World Economic Forum pledge highlight the importance of value-based care. As a matter of fact we are the first company in China to adhere to this goal. We must all shift our mindset from a disease-based healthcare system to one that is focused on health and prevention. We need to focus on keeping people healthy and preventing illnesses rather than only treating diseases once they arise. The big question we face is how healthcare companies can thrive while helping citizens to prevent sickness and prevent the preventables. It is a complex issue that requires collective intelligence and innovative solutions. We always say that it is an impossible triangle to balance the competing interests of payers, providers and patients. However, given the urgency of an aging population that is leading to unsustainable healthcare expenditures for governments globally, we are optimistic that new innovations in business models will emerge. A timely reminder when we get frustrated at the problems we face at work. Be kinder and gentler to those who made a mistake. We all need a break sometimes. I am in fund management because in this industry, the mistakes that we may make, hardly anyone died from them. Specifically I chose to be in PE, where there are no daily marked to market volatility and typically no leverage to trigger forced selling at the absolute worst time to sell. Having help manage a PE portfolio diversified over vintage years, geography, industry, sub-asset classes over the last 20 years, I know that as long as we persevere, we can always recover from our occassional losses, and still outperform public markets in the long run. It is stressful at times, but done correctly, no one gets hurt, and everyone can retire well. Here's my heartfelt salute to all those who really deal with life and death issues in their daily work. The closest I do that is related to life and death issue is to invest in life settlement funds. #PE

What has changed for medical investment in China during this “Capital Winter”? I was in Korea last week but didn’t miss out on the Gaorong Capital高榕资本’s Annual Healthcare CEO Conference & Demo Day in Shanghai. It’s a close-door event hosted by Gao Rong, a leading VC in China, attended by representatives from their healthcare portfolio companies, LPs, and other investment partners. It was a great opportunity to share my thoughts on why Chinese healthcare innovators need a mindset shift to achieve their Go Global aspirations. It was also a valuable learning experience for me. Here are a few takeaways from the event: 1️⃣ New Opportunities in the “Capital Winter”: While people are talking about the "capital winter" in China, funding is still available there, and it's still more substantial compared to many other parts of the world. However, new IPO regulations have made exits significantly harder, leading investors to become more cautious and selective. They are increasingly exploring alternative opportunities, such as overseas deals and acquisitions of corporate assets. 2️⃣ Survival of the Fittest: Biotech companies that once saw big investments in China are now facing tough times for the subsequent rounds due to IPO challenges. Only those with strong resilience and adaptation are likely to survive, while others may disappear. This may not be a bad thing, as it's a natural process to eliminate excess and encourage more rational competition. 3️⃣ Increased Focus on Commercial Viability: With IPOs becoming difficult, investors are paying more attention to the commercial growth of their companies. They’re helping with business development, fundraising, and even global expansion. No one knows how long this "winter" will last, but investors are finding creative ways to support their portfolio companies and each other.  🌍 It’s all about adapting and staying strong! Vietnam hospital industry is in the midst of an extremely stressful period, primarily due to post-pandemic recovery business, new investors’ expectation but also factors such as talent shortages, a challenging economy and pricing pressure, among others. Many CEOs at hospitals actually retired doctors who have stayed in their current leadership roles longer than they might normally have, in order to help hospitals using own influences, deal with those challenges. According to John Koster MD emphasized on leadership style of hospital CEO. “The egos and the narcissism of some CEOs is a problem,” Koster said. “People don’t love you — they love the role of the CEO and what that person can do for them. And a week after you’re gone, and people move on. The whole notion that people love you and need you — that’s your ego talking to you.” That’s why the complexity requires leaders to be creative, strategic and navigate organizational dynamics, CEO needs to develop a long-term vision (for example, Vision-2030), a culture of respect, transparency, safety and reliability. Many leadership styles are applied in healthcare, the most appropriate for Vietnam market is innovative, transformational, and servant style leaders. Why? Vietnamese staff, mainly doctors are used to being somewhat authoritative themselves, so dislike being directive. Although they will not speak-up, silent, OK mentality but hate directive style, become non-followers and demoralized. Ultimately effect the business performance. Outcomes research shows that collaboration between doctors within and other specialties as well as between doctors and other healthcare professionals’ effects in better outcomes for the patients. The better the communication among stakeholders, the more effective the leadership will be. International accreditation plays a vital role to ruling risk, documented communication, practice collaborative governance against standards; that's where the action is these days for the CEO of Vietnamese hospital. Vietnamese healthcare is becoming highly global, transformative, Omni-channel dominating, social media directive, and technologies driven. The industry is known for shifting regulations, rapidly evolving technological and clinical advancements, rising costs, and growing ethical concerns, CEOs must constantly adapt and innovate solutions. Effective leadership plays a crucial role in shaping the culture of Vietnamese hospital, and ensuring its ability to tackle complex issues related to care delivery. FrontierView was recently delighted to host an executive roundtable, in collaboration with our partner DKSH, on accelerating access and seizing growth in Southeast Asia's healthcare markets. The roundtable brought together experienced executives interested in the opportunities arising from health-expenditure growth in the region into 2025. Key takeaways from the event include: ➡ Southeast Asia is performing well so far in 2024, helping many companies make up for underperformance in South Korea. ➡ While a good number of participants are beating profitability targets, the majority reported seeing an increase in competition from China. ➡ There was consensus amongst the group that private-sector growth will accelerate. ➡ There was near consensus amongst the group that Indonesia will not overcome its physician shortage in a timely manner - which provoked retrospection on some bets being placed on the market. ➡ The two key markets for investment now are Vietnam and Indonesia, followed by Malaysia. ➡ AI presents an opportunity to gain more scale across a fragmented Southeast Asia, but also an opportunity for innovation that can be fed back to corporates – Indonesia is a market to watch for AI innovators, though the regional countries are lagging in terms of overall AI policy and none currently have an AI marketing authorization / reimbursement pathway. ➡ There is an overall hesitancy for further localization in Southeast Asia, with more interest in how companies can pursue "alternative localization paths" through other investments that build local capacity and deepen relationships. ➡ It is expected that there will be a limited increase in public-sector funding (far below what is needed), but that emerging trends such as hospital in the home, more services delivered by nurses and pharmacists, and PPP models will gradually grow and present increasingly attractive alternatives for patients. ➡ With private insurance growing, it is increasingly necessary to engage with decision makers within private-payer organizations to educate and align on value. #SoutheastAsia #SEAsiahealthcare #SEAsiahealthcarefunding #SEAsiahealthcareaccessibility

This afternoon, Patrick Chan is kind enough to spend his time to talk to me despite his busy schedules. He is a very successful entrepreneur and highly respected in the F&B scene in Singapore. I admire his dedication to his field and also his commitment to also contribute part of his time to give back to the societies by means of giving talks to young undergraduates and students. Sharing some of my key takeaways: 1. Be clear of what you want. 2. Have a long term plan but also experiment with new things. 3. Personal branding is very important, your reputation precedes you. 4. Keep learning and put practice what you learned. 5. Most importantly, take action. I will start implementing what he has advised. Hopefully, I can be as successful one day... America is now $35 trillion in debt, we have an incredibly shaky political system, and there's a good chance someone will shoot you in the back at your grocery store for no apparent reason. We just have to be less bad than the other options. China is a terrifying authoritarian regime that makes famous business people disappear. Japan is a giant old age home. Europe is in a tailspin by every single measure of economic and human well-being. She has most of the same problems as United States with none of the entrepreneurial vitality.
