Are we seeing Telco's spring back to life? Lacking innovation for years, is GPUaaS the saviour, making them more relevant to Enterprises looking to deploy AI? Singtel is not the only telco to move in this direction, we have seem similar announcements from other telco's in Asia, including Maxis and SK telecom. I spent a long time in Telco, I know what it takes to run a local, and global, Enterprise focussed sales business. It takes a lot of scale, a lot of people (sales, technical sales support etc), it also takes access to a huge amount of customers. Whereas in pure DC world, i.e operators that solely provide data centre solutions, we have seen an industry often focussed on selling to literally a handful of customers, the "hyperscalers". The two industries couldn't be more different from a go-to-market perspective, many of us will be aware that one of our most successful dc operators in Asia doesn't even have any "sales" people. The fact is most global telco's exited the DC space over the last decade, often choosing to spend capex on 4 and 5G rollouts. Will the big global telco's follow this new trend that we are seeing regional telco's invest into GPUaaS? After all they still have access to the global Enterprise's. This is going to be fascinating, it's clear GPUaaS is at a very early stage, which is why its even more surprising to see Telco's, who are normally late adopters, come in so soon. Certainly a brave move, maybe the last try to stay relevant. What is clear, there is always going to be one winner, regardless of channel, and that's the GPU providers. They are the casino, and we know that the casino always wins.

🌏Southeast Asia has joined the global AI race for a while and some countries like Indonesia are standing out. 👏A local telco has planned to launch a large language model called Sahabat-AI in cooperation with an Indian company. Like in other parts of the world the development of this local model is more than a major technology initiative. It is also a crucial effort to address one of the largest markets in Southeast Asia AND to preserve its local culture and its more than 700 languages. Once again, linguistic and cultural effectiveness is at stake. ➡And there is more to come in that region⬇ "There's a broader drive in Southeast Asia to build AI models that better reflect the region's diverse languages and cultures. For example, Singapore backs the Southeast Asian Languages in One Network (Sea-Lion) project, a model that operates in 11 of the region's languages."

Google is investing US$1 billion in Thailand to build a new data center and cloud region. In Malaysia, Google has commenced construction of its US$2 billion data center and cloud region as well. Innovate Asia 2024 served as a great discussion forum and engagement platform with Communication Service Providers on topics that will drive industry growth and fuel innovation. We engaged with our customers from across the region and held discussions across various curated sessions on topics like 5G network evolution, AI and automation in networks, 5G monetization and growth strategies for CSPs. At the event, held in Thailand last week, we announced our successful collaboration with IOH towards deploying the world’s first full-stack Digital Monetization Platform (DMP), demonstrating an impressive advancement in Indonesia's digital capabilities. As the first of its kind, the platform is part of Ericsson’s Telecom Business Support System (BSS) portfolio and enables #Indosat to enhance digital services such as 5G readiness and advanced B2B solutions. A key milestone in this deployment was the rapid migration of millions of prepaid subscribers in just 18 days, completed seamlessly without any disruptions. We also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IOH to continue our collaboration in harnessing the potential of Gen AI and Machine Learning (AI/ML) in the realm of DMP and BSS. We also signed a MoU with Bangladesh’s largest mobile telecommunications operator, #Grameenphone, to collaborate on advancing AI and Automation to drive innovation and sustainable transformation throughout Bangladesh.
