I am sharing advocacy opinion articles on ESG investing.   In the capital spectrum, ESG investing is not a philanthropic activity that seeks only social returns but still seeks financial returns in the long run. From focusing solely on shareholder interests to achieve economic returns, other stakeholders are now considered to achieve more sustainable financial returns. From an initial focus on 1P, profit, we now move to 3P, profit, people, and planet. From a risk, fiduciary duty, economic, impact and ethics, client demand, and regulatory perspective, ESG issues are no longer seen as negative externalities unrelated to investment returns, but sooner or later need to be internalized to affect the sustainability of financial returns in the long term, while contributing for a better future. Concerning POJK 51/POJK 03/2017 on the Implementation of Sustainable Finance for Financial Services Institutions, Issuers, and Public Companies, as of 1 January 2025, as well as the breadth of issues and diverse understanding of ESG investing, we also promote the ESG-based investment certification program published by the CFA Institute, an investment professional organization whose mission is to lead the investment profession globally by promoting the highest standards of ethics, education and professional excellence for the benefit of society (https://cfainstitute.org). This certification program aims to strengthen market integrity by benchmarking the knowledge and skills required for investment professionals to integrate ESG factors into the investment process and has been recognized by the UN-PRI. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lao Tzu 🤯It’s very easy to get excited about the data and modelling challenges around all things Net Zero and portfolio carbon measurement. ⚖️On the one hand, it’s simple to roll out the cliche “what gets measured gets managed”. 🙉On the other hand, the data is extremely challenging. There is huge scope for interpretation, many reporting methodologies and sources are not exactly consistent and consolidated. ✋For a large complex portfolio is the data quality high enough to agree very granular metrics and manage aggressively to these on a short-term basis? Er, no. 🧭Is it good enough to be able to get a “compass bearing” and force the asking of the right questions? Absolutely. 🌎And then over time move towards the big goal of “greening the world” and not just “greening the portfolio”. Again, absolutely. 💥This is big and important. It’s not meant to be easy. Do you want to be a good ancestor? 💹It’s also a critical investment context. Climate and related policy is driving value creation and destruction in many areas. The colour RED - that is why I am at COP29. It is “Code RED for Humanity” (as the IPCC alerted the world in their 2021 report) “Home” at COP is the Singapore pavilion. The little RED dot - accounting for 0.1% of global emissions, but committed to being a catalyst for global climate action especially in Asia. The privilege of representing OCBC at COP - whose defining RED colour reflects our heritage and vision of enterprising, resourceful and effective OCBC business and people. And strength, energy and passion. At the OCBC showcase on “Decarbonisation of the Real Economy through Innovations and Partnerships in Financing” earlier today, I spoke about our “NET” approach looking at New innovative solutions, Ecosystem Partnerships and Transition engagement as key pillars of OCBC’s commitment and approach to journeying with our clients. I also highlighted OCBC’s bold ambition to be Asia’s leading financial services partner for a sustainable future. Bold because we want to the leader in Asia but also bold because we see our future as inextricably linked to a sustainable future, a future that is not so clearly or easily achievable. Decarbonisation is particularly challenging for South-east Asia’s economy. Needing to balance growth and to do so in a green and yet inexpensive way. Interesting that several Asset Managers holding BKSH shares abide by ESG rules that a large asset long term Value Creator company, like BKSH , decides not to follow. Who is right ? I feel that there are good reasons for BKSH to make their own ESG judgements each time it takes a decision for a purchase or a sale without pre-compromising its own freedom to decide on their portfolio management process with auto-imposed rules. Thank you Sally Duros, recent hall of famer John Lothian from John Lothian News, Nandini Sukumar and Victoria Powell from The World Federation of Exchanges for hosting this virtual roundtable on the question: "Is ESG dead?". Sustainability is a normative concept: there is a lot of subjective discussion about what is right and wrong, good and bad. Creating acronyms and points systems doesn't make it objective and somehow give us a textbook of how to put it into practice. I don't know the origins of the term ESG but like many things in both climate and sustainablity, from where I sit, we had good frameworks decades ago. For example the Bruntlund Report published in 1987 defined 'sustainable development' as "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" and as far as three letter acronyms or words go, does the 3Ps of People, Planet and Profit (Prosperity) capture it better than ESG? Whatever your view is, action is more important. And markets are important. Markets are a true test of your view of value - you can express your view through price; buying or (not buying) and of course selling. And with the use of environmental markets we should even be able to align planet and profits for the benefit of people. #Carbonomics Great talking with Tomas Thyblad and Laetitia Hamon
