Why Knowing Isn't Enough. A recent report in Singapore last week revealed an alarming statistic: 1 in 3 youths (15-35 yo)is struggling with mental health issues! It’s a sobering number. But it doesn’t surprise those of us who have been watching the rising tide of anxiety, stress, and emotional distress among younger generations. We live in an era where we are more educated about mental health than ever before. Resources abound. We’ve read the books, listened to the podcasts, and followed the advice to "take breaks" and "prioritize self-care." Yet here we are, with the problem only getting worse. 😥 Why? Why if we know so much about how to take care of ourselves, is it still so hard to do? Perhaps this is the paradox of the human mind? That's why it's so easy to recoil to our usual tendencies. We can know exactly what we need to do to improve our well-being and still struggle to act on it. It’s like trying to steer a ship when the waves keep pushing us in the opposite direction. We hear advice like “just breathe,” “focus on the present,” or “be kind to yourself,” but when you’re in the thick of anxiety or depression, those words feel empty. The heart doesn’t always follow the mind’s lead. For our youths, the pressure to perform is immense. Expectations are high. There's also a perpetual need to appear like everything is under control. Social media does its job by projecting polished images of success and happiness, making it feel like everyone else has their lives figured out. For the young ones who are still forming their sense of identity and self-worth, the comparison game can be brutal. The weight of keeping up appearances adds another layer of mental strain. Human beings vulnerability is the key to connection and healing. But admitting we’re struggling may feel like defeat. For youths especially, the fear of judgment or appearing weak can stop them from reaching out for help. I often remind people that there’s a difference between knowing something and embodying it. It’s not enough to know that self-care is important. It's not enough to just talk about it. We need to create environments where self-care is possible. Compassion starts with changing the way we view success—not as an endless race to the top, but as a balance between fleeting accomplishments and inner stability. #financewithcompassion #youths #anxiety #mentalhealthcare

Re: Future of the Younger Generations When speaking to the young generations, Singapore's PM Lawrence Wong mentioned two important and relevant areas in the light of current trends. The importance of providing safety nets and opportunities in various stages of life. With the upheaval of economies around the world and the decline in traditional and family values, the availability of safety nets are essential to maintain a healthy and safe environment for the future generations. The advocates of greater freedom and rights of the individual have influenced and distorted the minds of the emerging generations. For those that have gone through the tumultuous period of the past and have seen Singapore progress into a prosperous and vibrant society would appreciate the safety nets of “law and enforcement” and the social and moral norms that were set up. As we approach the next chapter of the Singapore story, the safety nets have to be recalibrated to strengthen our social and cultural heritage and the interwoven racial harmonious fabric. Guidelines and boundaries must be in place to preserve our wholesome society fabric. Opportunities in the various stages in life are the hope and dreams of our younger generations. As we evolved into an AI and technology era, the rapid changes have caused a fresh approach to planning and implementation. Long term and strategic planning are broken down to shorter period with the ability to adjust and adapt to immediate changes! The stages of learning, working, family life and retirement are very much different from the 5Cs (cash, credit cards, country clubs and condominiums) goals of the older generations. The aspirations and hope of the the younger generations seems to be geared towards convenience and short term accomplishment! Possibly the mindset has been influence by the “ instant coffee” culture and “pay now (lah)” transactional technology! The traditional value of “working hard” seems to be replaced by “working smart”! Working at home seems to be the adopted trend. Window shopping has been replaced by online shopping. The shifts in lifestyle have emerged making opportunities of a different kind! As Singapore tackles these challenges and opportunities, a paradigm shift in thinking and implementation need to happen as we evolve into the next century. Hopefully with the rhetoric pronouncements, the pragmatic actions will bear fruits for the generations to come. Brief reflective thoughts by a pioneer generation individual who has experienced the past but hopeful of a better tomorrow, if only we believe. Douglas Cho July 7, 2024

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, Singapore's Health Minister, Ong Ye Kung, raises an urgent alarm about Integrated Shield Plan (IP) insurers. His concern over a potential "race to the bottom" in the pursuit of market share is both timely and significant as we’ve raised in past reports and in our Voices Dialogues series https://lnkd.in/drcUeXZk If left unchecked, this slippery slope of aggressive hand-in-glove camaraderie with insurers and the private medical sector, burdening the public subsidised sector and cost-cutting could severely compromise the quality of patient care. Imagine a scenario where insurers, fixated on short-term gains, undermine the foundational principles of patient-centric healthcare. The relentless drive to undercut rivals could lead to a reduction in coverage quality, limited access to essential treatments, and ultimately, a healthcare system that fails its most important stakeholders: the patients. Such an outcome would not only damage the reputation of insurers but also erode public trust in the healthcare system. It is imperative that insurers, healthcare providers, and policymakers come together to foster a balanced and sustainable approach. When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn: Lessons from a Tragic Incident 💔 The devastating case of a young Singaporean woman left in a vegetative state in South Korea highlights the importance of early personal and family financial planning. At such a young age, with a minor daughter depending on her, this situation brings critical considerations to the forefront: 1️⃣ Financial Coverage: Is she covered adequately? Comprehensive health, disability, and life insurance policies are vital. A proper review ensures these plans can sustain medical expenses and ongoing family needs without burdening loved ones. 2️⃣ How Much is “Enough”? In situations of total disability, a good rule of thumb is to aim for coverage and savings to last 20–25 years, accounting for inflation and unforeseen costs. This should cover medical care, rehabilitation, and day-to-day living expenses while also offsetting potential loss of income. 3️⃣ Affordability of Reduced Work Hours: Can her husband afford to work less to provide support? This depends on the family's savings, insurance payouts, and alternative income streams. Access to community or family assistance may also play a critical role in managing this transition. 4️⃣ Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA): An LPA is indispensable in such situations. It designates a trusted person to handle financial and personal welfare decisions. Without one, questions arise: ➡️ Who can access her bank accounts? ➡️ Who decides on property transactions under her name? ➡️ Who ensures her well-being and care decisions?
