What other events are taking place in Asia? Strategic Efficiency Amidst Crisis: PTP and Northport Thrive While Singapore Faces Delays PTP, managed by MMC and APM Terminals, processed 1.078 million TEUs in May 2024 without any congestion at its Southeast Asian transshipment hub. This success is due to their strategic focus on boosting efficiency and optimizing operations. In contrast, Singapore, the world's largest transshipment hub and a close neighbor to PTP, is experiencing delays and is deploying additional capacity in response to the Red Sea crisis. Northport, located in Port Klang, has gained from ad-hoc calls by shipping lines trying to navigate the crisis. It achieved a record 335,361 TEUs in May 2024, marking a 26% increase from the previous year and surpassing its previous high set in December 2020. The Red Sea geopolitical crisis has severely disrupted international trade, leading to vessel diversions from key regional ports. One of the issues that has not been discussed but I believe is also adding to the difficulty in the market right now is the lack of adequate forecasts. Note that I said, "adequate." Not perfect. Not even accurate. Adequate would be a step up for many importers. It has been astonishing to me recently the challenge it seems to be for importers to estimate their volume needs for a reasonable stretch of time. Some clearly are not sure how to figure this out. Some stubbornly refuse to produce. Either way, it is making the situation we are all living in now more difficult. These ships are not planes who have limited cargo space that are planned, packed and staged within hours of their departure. They are not greyhound buses that stop at their ports and just "pick up whatever containers are laying around." They are massively huge vessels moving in some cases over 10-12,000 40' containers. And their load plans are often organized weeks in advance. It is the goal of any vessel operator to maximize their load factors, and this does not happen haphazardly. The largest shippers in the world are better, though not perfect, at forecasting. But they understand the need to tell their carrier partners what to plan for, so they typically know within some reasonable wiggle-room how many containers they are going to move during the contract year. They then give the carriers and/or forwarders a monthly or quarterly rolling forecast. This isn't rocket science, folks. If you really are not sure or cannot fathom how your orders or products will compute in terms of how many containers, ask your supplier to give you those numbers. Trust me, they know exactly how much of their product will fit in a container. Or work with your forwarders. They, too, can help here. Either looking at your historical data or packaging specs, they can work with you to estimate your needs and future outlook. Either way, this needs to become a mandatory requirement especially in times of limited space and capacity. The customers begging for space with little or no time available to wait for a booking are doing, most importantly, themselves a disservice. In times like this, forecasting is king. This year witnessed a significant surge in Ro-Ro vessel orders, reflecting the escalating demand for ro-ro shipping services. A remarkable 68 new ro-ro ships were constructed in 2023, a stark rise compared to the mere five vessels built in preceding years. This uptrend in vessel production underscores the industry's response to the mounting requirement for efficient vehicle transportation, notably emanating from China. The nation's robust export figures reveal a substantial 5.2 million vehicles shipped out in 2023, further emphasizing the necessity for expanded maritime capabilities in the ro-ro sector.

Yang Ming chief financial officer Peter Su said today he believes container shipping has become so chaotic that it is hard to explain port omissions and skipped sailings to shippers “The market has become chaotic to the point that it’s impossible to explain skipped sailings. The ocean container shipping market has been radically altered in 2024. Spot rates on major trades out of the Far East have increased by more than 300% between December 2023 and June 2024.   Port Klang, Malaysia recorded all-time-high congestion on 1 July. Frontloading has seen peak season arrive months early, adding additional pressure to overcrowded and disrupted cargo networks. SINGAPORE Increases Night Container Moves to Keep Backlog Low; The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) working in conjunction with PSA Singapore, other operators, and the carriers in the port continues to take steps to increase efficiency and ensure the backlogs that cropped up a few months ago remain in check. Starting September 4, they are making a trial at moving containers overnight on barges a permanent part of port operations. “MPA and PSA Singapore have successfully completed a four-month trial with six barge operators, allowing for the night movement of line-towed container barges to and from Pasir Panjang Terminal (PPT) between 7:00 pm and 6:30 am,” reports the MPA. “This initiative was part of MPA’s ongoing efforts to review its rules and regulations to reduce business costs and turnaround time, enhance resource optimization while ensuring safety.” At the end of August, Linerlytcia’s data shows just 60,000 boxes on ships in the anchorage with 264,000 TEU on the dock. Vessels waiting went from 28 at the beginning of July to just five at the end of August based on Linerlytica data. The report shows Singapore has the lowest queue-to-berth ratio of any of the major ports. According to MPA data, the Port of Singapore handled 23.82 million TEU in the first seven months of 2024.
