There are two fundamental constraints to Retail Media Networks (RMNs): Audience Size: RMNs and retargeting are closely related because they both depend on a finite audience—namely, the visitors to a retailer's website. This naturally limits the growth potential for both strategies. Just like retargeting, where effectiveness is capped by the number of users already engaging with a brand, RMNs are constrained by the traffic to the retailer’s ecosystem. If fewer people visit the site, the available audience for RMN ads shrinks, which in turn can reduce revenue, assuming a constant return on ad spend (ROAS). While expanding to offline shoppers or using lookalike audiences can increase reach, performance may not be as strong. Performance (Incrementality): The second key issue is incrementality—or rather, the lack of it. Serving an ad through an RMN doesn’t necessarily result in a new, incremental sale. Many of these ads reach shoppers who likely would have purchased the product anyway. This mirrors the problem with retargeting: when ads primarily reach people who are already inclined to buy, the impact of the ad spend diminishes. Advertisers are becoming more aware that increasing their RMN budget doesn’t always translate into a corresponding rise in sales. In the early days of RMNs, or even before they were called RMNs I had the honor of working with HookLogic, Inc. (Acquired by Criteo in 2016) advertisers were eager to spend more because ROAS was so high. But when budgets weren’t fully spent, the solution became offsite retargeting. Any change from an measurement standpoint on the advertiser side can cause a step up or down in spend. The recent partnership between YouTube and Shopee marks a pivotal moment in Southeast Asia's e-commerce landscape, particularly in Vietnam. As both platforms prepare to launch their integrated shopping feature, they aim to capitalize on the country's burgeoning online shopping trends, which have transformed Vietnam into a digital commerce hotspot. This collaboration enables YouTube creators to tag Shopee products in their videos, allowing viewers to purchase items directly through embedded links. This seamless integration of e-commerce into video content not only enhances user engagement but also offers a unique shopping experience that blends entertainment with convenience. Vietnam has swiftly emerged as one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing e-commerce markets, recently surpassing the Philippines to become the region's third-largest. In 2024, Shopee dominates this landscape, commanding 60% to 70% of the total gross merchandise value among leading platforms. Recent statistics show that about 79% of Vietnamese internet users shop on Shopee, highlighting its significant market penetration and popularity. Vietnam's e-commerce sector is projected to reach a value of $32 billion by 2025 , driven by a young, tech-savvy population. Currently, 57 million Vietnamese shop online, with a notable 43% belonging to Gen Z. This demographic shift is crucial as these digital natives increasingly prefer online shopping over traditional retail channels. A recent survey revealed that Vietnamese consumers are becoming more discerning and price-sensitive. While they remain loyal to established brands, there's growing interest in exploring private labels and new products. This trend underscores the importance of competitive pricing and product quality for brands aiming to capture this market. Moreover, impulse buying is on the rise, with 93% of shoppers making unplanned purchases influenced by promotions and deals. This behavior presents an opportunity for YouTube and Shopee to leverage engaging content that drives spontaneous purchasing decisions. Livestream shopping has gained immense popularity in Vietnam, with businesses using real-time video interactions to engage consumers effectively. This method enables direct communication with customers and streamlines the purchasing process. As YouTube integrates shopping features into its platform, it stands to benefit from this trend by allowing creators to host livestreams that promote Shopee products directly. As YouTube and Shopee prepare to launch their initiative in Vietnam, they face stiff competition from TikTok Shop, which has rapidly gained market share since entering the e-commerce space. TikTok Shop accounts for 22% of the market share in recent transactions, showcasing its growing influence. The competition is fierce, with TikTok's innovative approaches like social commerce reshaping consumer expectations and shopping habits.
