Good day connections, A few weeks ago with the mindset of #GrowthThroughConnections, I had a profound discussion with Vijay S Paul 🌱 I had the privilege of engaging with Vijay, a Communication Adviser at Monash University, Chair at IEEE Victorian Section and the Chair of IEEE R10 IMC. Despite his introverted nature, Vijay's wisdom and insights truly shone through during our discussion. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation: 💡 Vijay shared an intresting perspective on how universities abroad, particularly those in Australia, resemble multinational corporations within the academic sphere. This underscores the significance of global viewpoints in today's interconnected world. 🌏 Drawing from his extensive experience as a communication advisor and a senior IEEE member with over 15 years of expertise, Vijay emphasized the value of networking and founding new connections for personal and professional growth. 🤝 Through our conversation, I learned effective strategies for starting conversations and establishing rapport with new people. When you talk to someone new, it's important to start with something you both relate to, and then keep the conversation going by asking clear and specific questions. Your first impression is key, so try to make it memorable and leave a positive impact. Always make sure your conversations are interesting and set the tone for engaging discussions, rather than just a question-and-answer session. Even if only a few people remember you afterward, it shows how well you connected. It's not just about how many people you talk to, but about making meaningful connections. 💬 And finally, with some other casual talks, the call ended up with adding up a meaningful connection.✨ Overall, it was a pleasure connecting with Vijay and gaining valuable insights into effective communication strategies and networking practices. Being an amateur tennis umpire is not flamboyant, but I realized the basic principles of umpiring mirror how to enforce rules and run an organisation in practice. 1. Judgement of facts As an umpire, your primary responsibility is to ensure a fair and level playing field. While you may naturally admire the beauty of a well-executed stroke, your focus must remain solely on the facts and the rules. Whether the ball is in or out, or if it doubles on the bounce, your judgment should be unaffected by the player's style, personality and your emotions.  Likewise, leaders must separate personal biases or admiration for individual performance from objective decision-making. 2. Fairness is an approach, not the results. We all make mistakes. When the ball is millimeters from the line, it often surpasses human ability to make an accurate judgment. However, the key to effective leadership lies not in striving for perfection but in maintaining consistency. The moment you abruptly adjust your approach, your calls become inconsistent and frustration arises. In team leadership just as in tennis umpiring, people rely on steady judgment to foster trust and stability. By consistently giving your statements, others can confidently follow your lead. 3. Stand firm and establish your authority The worst thing on court for an umpire is changing your mind. To gain trust and maintain control on the court, you must show your decisiveness even when the situation seems unclear. Similarly, self-confidence builds respect and trust within a team. By standing firm on their points, leaders not only reinforce their credibility but also create a stable environment where the organization can thrive, knowing that decisions will be made with integrity and conviction.
