For this week, we have Pat Naranpat Thitipattakul, Investment Director at ORZON Ventures 💭 What does Orzon Ventures focus on? The idea is to combine the flexibility and decision-making expertise of a traditional VC with the extensive resources and ecosystem of a large corporate entity like OR. This approach aims to help startups grow by leveraging OR's existing customer base, infrastructure, and market presence. Orzon Ventures focuses on investing in startups particularly in sectors like mobility, lifestyle and food and beverage. The goal is to find innovative solutions that can benefit from OR's resources and customer network, ultimately fostering startup growth and corporate synergy. 💭 What motivated you to join 500 ? Unlike many who are determined to become venture capitalists,I initially applied for a position to manage an accelerator program at Disrupt, which was run by one of the GPs of 500 TukTuks. My interest in startups was piqued when a friend invited me to participate in a hackathon, which turned out to be an exhilarating experience. The fast-paced environment & the opportunity to connect with innovative founders inspired me to apply for the accelerator manager position. During the interview process, the CEO offered me a dual role: managing the accelerator program & joining the venture capital team. Despite my initial unfamiliarity with venture capital, I accepted the challenge. This dual role allowed me to witness the entire journey of startups, from their inception at hackathons to becoming fully-fledged companies. 💭 What are the biggest challenges for Thai startups? The Thai market faces significant funding challenges, with limited early-stage VC funds & a reliance on CVCs that invest mainly in Series A and beyond, creating a funding gap for earlier stages. Investors in Thailand are risk-averse & while there are fragmented angel investors, their limited capital makes funding difficult. This forces many Thai startup founders to reach profitability quickly or bootstrap, which can lead to better investment terms but is challenging. Additionally, foreign investors show interest but often lack confidence due to difficulties understanding the local ecosystem. 💭 What has been the biggest challenge as a VC in Thailand? For Orzon, the biggest challenge has been finding startups that synergize well with OR's existing operations. It's interesting that Tech in Asia released an article today on VC secondaries (which was republished with permission from The Realistic Optimist) talking about the emergence of VC secondaries as a crucial yet underused mechanism for the Tech ecosystem. Given my fond memories of my Private Equity days, let's talk a bit about Secondaries. 🔍 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? In simple terms, it's when shareholders of a company sell their stock to another investor, or a fund investor sells their LP ownership stake to another fund investor. 🔄 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 1. LP Secondaries: Most common type of Secondaries, where an existing LP's ownership in a PE/VC fund is bought by another LP. 2. GP Secondaries: A fund sponsor sells one or more assets from a fund it manages to a new fund, often managed by the same sponsor and capitalized by secondary buyers. 💡 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬? 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥? If they could sell, they would (𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴). In this current market where liquidity is scarce, exiting at a marked-up MOIC/IRR (𝘪.𝘦. 2021-22 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯) is challenging. In a LP Secondary scenario, a LP may decide to reduce their exposure to a certain geography due to a variety of reasons (𝘦.𝘨. 𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭, 𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨). In a GP Secondary scenario, more often than not, the fund projects that the portfolio companies require a bit more time (𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦) to realize the potential returns. 💰 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐲 𝐚 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲? Similar to other asset classes investment rationale, a Secondary investor may be able to acquire a good asset (𝘪.𝘦. 𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘰 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴) at a deeply discounted price, resulting in a respectable return in a much shorter timespan (𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 1.5-2𝘹 𝘔𝘖𝘐𝘊 𝘢𝘯𝘥 16-25% 𝘐𝘙𝘙 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 2-3 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴), relative to a typical 10-year fund life. In our inherently inefficient market, Secondaries can provide a crucial capital bridge to support the tech ecosystem and capital markets. "Acquiring Growth: Grab's Strategic Acquisition Moves in the Ride-Hailing and Food Delivery Space" 📊 Objectives and Outcomes Grab's acquisition of Chope and its attempted acquisition of Trans-cab had varying outcomes.  The Chope acquisition aimed to enhance Grab's food and beverage offerings, providing more synergies for its merchant partners, especially in helping them capture online-to-offline opportunities. With over 13,000 restaurants in its network, Chope has seated over 110 million diners and helped maximize business for more than 8,000 restaurants around Asia.  In contrast, the Trans-cab deal aimed to expand Grab's ride-hailing services, but was blocked by regulatory concerns. 🍴 Unlocking Dining Opportunities Grab's acquisition of Chope is a strategic move to bolster its omnicommerce strategy and capture the dining out opportunity. With Chope's mature reservations and table management system, Grab aims to extend its services to its merchant-partner base across the region. The acquisition will also strengthen Grab's relevance as consumers' preferred everyday super app. By cross-selling Chope's services to its merchant-partners, Grab can create a stronger, more holistic online-to-offline value proposition for merchants and users in Southeast Asia. 🚨 Regulatory Scrutiny and Competition Concerns In contrast, the Trans-cab deal was blocked by the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) due to concerns about reduced competition and Grab's already-dominant position in the ride-hailing market. Grab's market share in the ride-hailing industry is significant, with over 85,097 private-hire cars as of June this year, compared to Trans-cab's fleet of 2,500 taxis. Grab's dominance in the ride-hailing market may limit its ability to acquire other players, while its expansion into new areas like food and beverage may be less scrutinized. 🚗 Impact on Consumers, Drivers, and Fares With 13,436 taxis operating in Singapore as of June this year, Trans-cab drivers may face uncertainty about their long-term prospects. Consumers may also benefit from the continued presence of Trans-cab as a competitor to Grab, which has a large market share of private-hire cars. The deal's failure may not significantly impact Grab's ability to set prices, as it is already a dominant player in the market, with over 72,632 private-hire cars at the end of 2022. The failure of the Trans-cab deal may lead to Trans-cab exploring partnerships with non-dominant players in the point-to-point industry. With private-hire cars increasing by 17.4% from 72,632 at the end of 2022 to 85,097 as of June this year, Trans-cab may need to adapt to changing market dynamics. 🥳 Founders Lepak x Iterative I went to the first Lepak House event (thanks Liyen Tan and Henry Mao!) and honestly, the most fun I've had at a startup event in a very long while. It felt like the type of hangouts I used to attend in SF but rarely in Southeast Asia. There's something authentic and more meaningful about getting a bunch of founders together at someone's house, bringing food and hanging out. The worst is over. We always look forward to the annual e-Conomy SEA report by Temasek, Google and Bain & Company, to which we have contributed since its inception. The report provides insights into trending metrics within the digital ecosystem for both companies and venture capitalists. It also gives us a baseline and validation to assess whether we’re outperforming others. Many of East Ventures portfolios are exceeding this year’s findings in the report—and there are more to come; we have hundreds of them. Our founders at Sociolla, theAsianparent, Praktis, ShopBack, Komunal Indonesia, Traveloka, ISMAYA GROUP, Fore Coffee, IDN, Ruangguru, Inteluck, Waresix and Xurya Daya Indonesia have been working very hard against the odds, performing above the report's metrics and we hope that the worst is over. Often, in the board meetings, we no longer talk about runway, we discuss ebitda margin expansion. We remain bullish on this region (read: unlike others) and we are here to stay. Having been a keen reader since the report's first version in 2016, it is exciting to be involved. It is always important to reflect on where we have come from. When Google, Bain & Company & Temasek published their first e-Conomy report, the total digital economy market in Southeast Asia was estimated to be ~US$30 billion. By 2025, it will be ~US$300 billion (outperforming bullish initial forecasts a decade ago by 30%+). The region continues to prove its long-term potential, with localized private capital availability still relatively nascent. We remain in the early innings of a multi-decade innovation arc in Southeast Asia's core markets, and we are privileged to be able to support more than 60 companies on their mission to build companies of endurance that will help power the region's potential. 𝐆𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐧𝐚𝐦 Decision Lab's Connected Consumer report for Q2 2024 had already revealed Gojek's declining performance in Vietnam before the company announced its withdrawal from the market: ✨ Penetration rate dropped from 22% to 18% over the quarter ✨ Preference rate for car services saw a significant drop among Gen Z  ✨ Preference rate for bike services declined across all three generations X, Y, Z Gojek's exit reflects the intense competition in Vietnam's ride-hailing market, with all players vying for dominance. Will the market now be easier to navigate, or will the game accelerate? The answer remains to be seen, but Q2 2024 data already showed the rise and fall of some services.
