Each step like this is key in moving quickly to an integrated and coherent framework. Integration will allow buyers of credits to have confidence they are utilizing credits of the right quality that will serve their climate action objectives and will stand-up to scrutiny. The more we can simplify and clarify the regulation and standards around this industry, the better. There are many examples across other industries where corporates can take positive action and be confident that they are following clear and integrated rules. 🌊 Harnessing the Power of OECMs for Ocean Conservation 🌊 Last week, I had the pleasure of joining experts at EuroMarine’s Foresight Workshop #CIMA, diving into innovative marine conservation beyond traditional protected areas. This event highlighted the crucial role of Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) 🐠🌿 in protecting 30% of our oceans by 2030. As the founder of Oceanogami, I strongly advocate for balanced conservation approaches that integrate both Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and OECMs. While MPAs focus on strict protection, OECMs bring adaptability, recognizing local cultures, sustainable practices, and biodiversity 🧭🌱. These can include culturally significant zones or areas governed by traditional practices, giving us flexible pathways to safeguard ocean biodiversity. 🔎 Why OECMs Matter In the Mediterranean, only 6.5% of waters are protected, with just 0.04% fully safeguarded as no-take areas. Great news! Sustainability and nature conservation, usually funded by the government (in mature economies), are getting a new source of support: family offices in Singapore.  Traditionally focused on wealth management, family offices are now turning towards impact investments, such as nature conservation. As the global urgency to protect and restore our natural environment intensifies, these private advisories are uniquely positioned to pioneer the redirection of capital towards more sustainable practices. This evolution in investment strategies aligns financial returns with global sustainability goals and showcases the strategic role family offices play in driving systemic change. Having led numerous initiatives where business strategies align seamlessly with sustainability, I see this development as a pivotal moment for corporate social responsibility. The drive towards impact investing is a shift towards enduring, positive change, which echoes my long-standing commitment to working with businesses to make a positive difference. By channelling resources into initiatives that have a direct, positive impact on the environment, these organisations are taking a leading role in green philanthropy. They are setting a precedent for how private wealth can and should be a force for good, championing sustainable development and creating a legacy that benefits current and future generations. These are the types of businesses that I’d love to collaborate with!

Major Update for the Voluntary Carbon Market 💡: SBTi has approved carbon credits for Scope 3 targets. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has announced they’ll be allowing environmental attribute certificates (including carbon credits), to be applied towards Scope 3 targets. This decision comes due to growing concerns that companies aren’t reducing their emissions quickly enough, especially Scope 3 emissions which for many, (like in the financial services sector), constitute up to 99.98% of their total emissions footprint. Recognizing the challenges companies face in meeting these targets, SBTi's new policy aligns with the Voluntary Carbon Market Integrity Initiative (VCMI) beta scope 3 flexibility claim. This policy enables companies to use carbon credits to cover up to 50% of their annual Scope 3 emissions, providing a bridge towards achieving their climate goals. This could potentially unlock billions in climate finance that is urgently needed. Looking forward to seeing the release of the first draft of basic rules, thresholds, and guardrails for using environmental attribute certificates for Scope 3 abatement by July 2024.
