The thoughtful questions from the audience included: - Would an office dedicated to future planning have an appointed minister, and whether it would be effective if it had to be subject to poltical and electoral and constraints as other ministers are? - Is being ruthlessly pragmatic and "ideology-blind" itself an ideology? - How has Singapore balanced the narrative of vulnerability with its decades of socio/ political/ economic success? I often find myself in uncomfortable yet thought-provoking 💭 conversations with colleagues, and one topic that keeps coming up is AI in healthcare. I recently had a chat with my friend Sang’udi Sang’udi , who is leading his team to develop an AI model called "SarataniAI ," aimed at speeding up cervical cancer diagnosis. Their innovation earned them the CHIA Innovation Award at the 8th Tanzania Health Summit back in 2021. Our conversation was casual, but it struck me how rapidly innovation, especially AI-driven, is rising, mainly led by youth a.k.a Gen Z 😃. Yet, as much as we celebrate these advancements, there’s a pressing need for a regulatory framework that supports and nurtures these innovations. Friendly policies and easy access to localized data are crucial for training competent AI models. Regulators need to step up and guide young innovators through these challenges. At the Tanzania Health Summit , we have been empowering young innovators through our CHIA Innovation Award since 2020. This year, three promising innovators will be vying for the prestigious award at the 11th Summit in Zanzibar. I personally wouldn’t say no to a regular afternoon siesta, as a way to boost productivity whilst beating the heat. But as the authors of this article point out, a daily nap might not fly in productivity-focussed Singapore. Here’s my 2 cents on what will happen to office workers like myself, if temperatures continue to soar: 🥵 More WFH days to escape hot and bothersome commutes. Nobody wants to arrive at work drenched in sweat and ready for another shower. 🥵 Fewer afternoon engagements to avoid being out in the blistering heat. Yes, Vitamin D is great, but who wants to turn up for meetings looking like a freshly baked hors d’oeuvre? 🥵 A resurgence of online meetings, especially in the afternoons and hotter months. Better dust off that old Zoom guide from COVID days! 🥵 The replacement of beachside vacations with travel to colder climes. Finally - we will all have to learn the rules of fair play in snowball fights. In my twenty years in government (including two years as Chief of Staff to a Deputy Minister), I have attended countless meetings between public servants and stakeholders. Too many of those meetings were not successful for one or both parties – resulting in a waste of precious resources. In my role as consultant, I often get asked about the best way to set up meetings with government. I have three basic rules. 1 - Know Who You Want to Meet It is important to choose the appropriate level of official for your meeting. Many people assume that targeting the highest level of authority in a government organization will yield the best results. This is not always the case and can be counterproductive.  Choose your official wisely. 2 - Be Specific About Why You are Requesting a Meeting Are you seeking funding ? Are you looking to introduce your organization or project? When you request a meeting with an official, be explicit about the reason for the request. Make it easy for them to understand why you want to meet and how they should prepare to be useful for you. 3 - Have an Engaging Conversation Let’s be real, you will probably only get a 30–45 minute meeting window. It’s important to make the most of it by driving a conversation to the 2 or 3 main points that will advance your priorities. Be direct, be concise, be honest. An engaging discussion will get their attention and get them talking. Even though I’m aspiring to serve as an independent director, wanting to bring diversity to RC and AC given my background in GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance), I agree that mandating a genda quota might bring about unintended outcome as shared by Boon Gin Tan and might not be the most sustainable model for Singapore. Whilst such a policy would be very supportive for aspiring female first-time directors like myself, I want to be selected on the basis that I’m the best candidate to bring valued perspectives to the boardroom, not merely due to the mandated quota. SHS has undergone some major challenges in the past but this may be our greatest challenge yet. We are at the precipice of an incredible opportunity to save and preserve an important piece of Singapore's history, and the clock is ticking fast as the kelong will most probably be demolished by end-2024. When I first arrived at the kelong several months back, I was moved by the kelong and its surroundings. It was not just my first time at a kelong, but it was the first time for everyone else who joined me. Those who have been to the kelong can attest to its unique attributes and the historical and heritage value it brings to the Singapore landscape. We are now looking for partners from all sectors, especially in the ESG field, who are willing to work with us to support the kelong's feasibility study. This is necessary to better understand its future sustainability and the kinds of activities it can support. Come work with us. ⚕️ PREVENTIVE HEALTHCARE X HOLISTIC WELLBEING ⚕️ . . . Who would have thought that I would be having lunch with my family doctor, talking about collaboration potential with Osler Group Health International! Dr Tsin Uin FOONG started out as my daughter's doctor. But we liked her so much we started seeing her as well for any serious issues that we needed help with. So essentially she became our family doctor. And we've been with her since 2018. When values and purpose are aligned, there's really so much that can be discussed and done together. Dr Foong is also an expert who speaks on longevity, preventive healthcare and holistic wellbeing. My biggest takeaway from this meeting was this. 👍 The benefits of alcohol from a social and mental wellbeing perspective could potentially unweight the negatives of alcohol consumption. 👍 Being red when we consume alcohol might not be that bad a thing because that means our liver is not working on overdrive to break down the alcohol. 👍 DNA tests are the up and coming needs to understand what could work best for our unique lifestyles. But caution on which types of DNA tests to take. 👍 Preventive healthcare is the way to go for healthcare. 👍 Yours truly... Putting oneself in front of an audience, especially when you have no control over how they perceive you, can be daunting. However, after working in the mental health sector for about 20 years, both on and off, I’ve encountered numerous individuals who have approached me to share their experiences of mental distress. These individuals, often new migrants or 1.5 and 2nd generation Asians, frequently confide in me with a plea: “Please don’t share this with others; I trust you, so I want to share with you.” Throughout my journey, I’ve been open and candid about my own experiences with mental distress, hoping to instil a sense of hope in others. Yet, I’m acutely aware of the risk of being placed on a pedestal, where people might think, “If he made it, I should be able to as well.” While I want to encourage hope, it’s crucial to convey that recovery is not a straightforward path. It involves hard work, and often, it’s a journey of two steps forward and one step back. The last thing I want is for people to believe that recovery means all the pain, stress, and anxiety will disappear. The truth is, these challenges don’t simply vanish—they persist. The difference lies in learning to manage them, to accept them, and eventually, to embrace them. You may have all the degrees and scientific understanding of what anxiety is, but when it strikes, all that knowledge can easily be overshadowed because your brain feels hijacked by the intensity of the experience. Unlocking DEI Insights: Time to Act on Inclusion. Asia One recently published an article on a survey by foundit, highlighting trends and opportunities for diversity and inclusion (DEI) in Singapore. The survey reveals a commitment to diversity in principle, but also underscores the need for better implementation of DEI initiatives to align organizational intentions with actions. Key Highlights: Commitment to Diversity: 36% of employees believe their workplace is highly or extremely committed to diversity hiring. 52% feel their organization is responsive or highly responsive to feedback on diversity issues. Training Programs: 48% of respondents claim their organizations do not have diversity training programs in place. Sekhar Garisa, CEO of foundit, recommends training to raise awareness. While awareness is the first step, our research and work in building inclusive workplaces show that behaviour’s matter more than awareness and can be measured. Insights from the World Economic Forum found that companies globally spent an estimated $7.5 billion on DEI-related efforts in 2020. This figure is projected to more than double to $15.4 billion by 2026. Despite this investment, progress remains slow. It’s clear that behaviours are the key to making a real, measureable impact.
