Story time! 📖 The other day, during a meeting with one of our leaders in APJ, he shared a story that reminded me why I’m proud to be at Databricks—a story about the origins of Apache Spark and its journey from concept to core technology for some of the world’s biggest names, like Netflix. So, back in 2006-2009, Netflix hosted a competition offering a $1M prize to anyone who could improve the accuracy of its recommendation algorithm by 10%. It was a massive challenge that highlighted the need for scalable, efficient algorithms in big data and machine learning. During that time, Matei Zaharia (Databricks' CTO and Co-founder), spoke with Lester Mackey, who was competing in that Netflix competition. Lester needed a better distributed computing framework than what was available, and that sparked Matei's idea: a flexible, powerful framework for distributed machine learning—Apache Spark. Fast forward to today, Netflix relies on Spark to power key operations, from personalized recommendations to video optimization for millions of users. Spark is at the core of so much of what makes Netflix seamless and tailored for each user, proving just how impactful one innovation can become. It’s inspiring to see the legacy Spark has built and to know I’m part of a company pushing boundaries in data and AI every day—technology that millions of us rely on without even knowing it. Crazy that I event managed to collaborate with the man himself - Matei, on a couple of initiatives when he was in Tokyo earlier this year. Proud to be a part of this amazing journey! 🚀
