[Public Service Announcement - Sustainability Events] UN 2.0 for Peace and Financial Market Transformation for Sustainable Development   The Sustainable Development Solutions Network, United Nations (UN) in Malaysia, and the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Malaya would like to invite you to attend a joint event on “The Summit of the Future: A new global pact for a peaceful, inclusive and sustainable world”, which will feature a public lecture by Professor Jeffrey Sachs titled “UN 2.0 for Peace and Financial Market Transformation for Sustainable Development”. The event will take place as follows: Date: July 04, 2024 (Thursday) Time: 1630-1800 (GMT+8) Location:  JC2 Hall, Sunway University UN member States will come together during the Summit of the Future, to be convened at the UN Headquarters in New York on 22-23 September, to adopt the Pact for the Future. The Pact aims to reinvigorate multilateralism and accelerate the implementation of existing commitments, especially the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, through actionable deliverables. Establishing protected areas is just the first step – managing them effectively is the key to long-term conservation success.   Creating new protected areas is essential for biodiversity conservation, but success hinges on sustainable funding and effective management. A recent study reveals that many protected areas in Southeast Asia are struggling and ineffective in preventing deforestation, leading to biodiversity loss and carbon emissions. This is primarily due to insufficient resources and staffing.   "Once you set up a protected area, that’s when the money pot shrinks," notes our sustainable finance expert, Gopalasamy Reuben Clements. While funding is often available for creating new protected areas, support tends to decrease once they are designated.   This is where transition funding and sustainable financing play critical roles – bridging the gap from the setup phase to sustainable management, ensuring these areas fulfil their conservation potential.   It is not just about setting them up, but keeping them thriving.
