A thought to ponder upon for Product Owners on 19th August 2024: As a Product Owner – you can tell the team what to make (Via the Sprint Goal), that is called managing the outputs, as the PBIs / User Stories delivered don’t always deliver value As a Product Owner – you ask the team to create high level value; like growing revenue, that is called managing the impact. Its still a challenge because it is not specific enough. As a Product Owner – What you need to do is to manage with outcomes, ask the team to create specific customer behaviors that drives business results, this will allow the team to define and identify the right solutions and keep them focused on delivering value In our thought process – Outcome = A change in human behavior that drives business results. Majority of the certifications / workshops / Agile Coaches / Scrum Masters (remember SM is the default Team Coach) – do not even have the slights clue on the above thought process, how it is to be achieved, what does it mean? What would drive human behavior? Scrum Guide – Does talk about Product Owner = Value Maximiser That is the only statement – It does not say how? It is upto the industry to interpret the statement in the right sense and make the products that End User use – drive a change in the behavior pattern. But our industry unfortunately, has been involved only in User Story writing – I must admit – we do not do a good job here also. This thought of mine today – will / can attract a big bashing – but I am calling it out.

Theory of Hard Work vs Luck !! While we can have many theories of what helps you to grow professionally, it will be a futile debate swaying from one side to the other, with n number of examples for each. I will call it as 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 for the sake of simplicity. And, the validity of this theory is retrospective rather than a true scientific measure. Let me narrate a story from my side. I took an Implementing SAFe® with SAFe® Practice Consultant (SPC) certification in early 2016, which by the way was an Informed decision in discussion with few mentors, which changed the way I look at a Professional Life forever. Yes, lot of failures and few good wins which took care of all failures plus some more as an independent trainer, advisor and consultant. After 8 years, retrospectively I can talk about a good decision or being at the right place at the right time. By the way, now I teach the same course as an SPC-T !! Thought for 14th August 2024: Product Owners – Need to realize that designing / development of Product Backlog is not about products, but about your relationships with stakeholders, customers, end users. If as a product owner, we think such investment is expensive in product development then I recommend to try ignorance and judge the ROI over a period of time. Good Product Owner begin with honesty, asks tough questions, dives into collaboration, and creates trust by their intuition Finally – Product Development, as I understand it, is both about doing different things (in your product) as well as doing things differently for the current features and functionality But alas – What I find in the industry (based on past few weeks of my discussions via a lot interviews – is that Product Owners = User Story Writing), Sad but reality of our Agile Industry. The blame is to be equally shared by all of us including and not limited to: Certification Bodies, Trainers, Management, End Users, Sponsors, Developers, Scrum Masters (and not to forget the so called Agile Coaches) I belong to the Agile Coach Category of the above list.

"Retrospect in less than 60 minutes" During my early years as a Scrum Master And due to the difficulties I had with Scrum I could not help a team Retrospect in under 2 hours I was the dedicated Facilitator Things changed in time My perspective changed on myself as a team member I understood that there were no hierarchies and no sub-teams I learned that I was not the dedicated Facilitator I am an equal member of the Scrum Team I started simplifying Retrospectives I started creating my own Retrospectives I started recording what I observed during the Sprint I started giving ownership of the Retrospective to the Scrum Team Let me share one of the Retrospectives I created 📌 The Leveraging Scrum Retrospective What needs nourishment? Or What could be done better? Then - What happened? - What experiment can we try to improve? - Action, what, who, when? The traditional linear, sequential approach to development is shifting toward a more holistic, agile model—and the rugby metaphor by Takeuchi and Nonaka is a perfect illustration. 🏉 In this model, the entire team moves together as a unit, passing the “ball” (i.e., the product) through overlapping phases, ensuring flexibility, collaboration, and continuous adaptation. This approach mirrors the modern need for speed and agility in product development—where time-to-market and quick adaptation are as important as quality and cost efficiency. The shift in priorities is clear: • Speed and flexibility are now as critical as product differentiation. • New products, especially those under five years old, are increasingly driving sales and profits. 3M, for example, generates a significant portion of its sales from products launched in the last five years. • Agility in development means faster iterations, more collaboration, and better alignment with customer needs.
