Good post by Skip Descant over at GovTech com yesterday regarding the transition to Open-Loop Tap-To-Pay Ecosystems at Coast RTA. I was particularly impressed with the "Cash Poor, Data Rich" introduction, as it is spot-on with what I have been communicating in our experiences with this technology at Monterey-Salinas Transit. Public Transit is at a crossroads technologically, with the growing ability to make use of well-established commercial-off-the-shelf products that the public is already comfortable with using in retail, restaurants, events, etc. at cost points that previously were unheard of. By moving our hardware to what will increasingly become a commodity purchase, and being able to choose from a variety of interoperable software-as-a-service providers, Agencies will not only be able to better serve the Public, but will generally be able to do so at a lower cost. But doing so will shift the focus of where agencies need to invest with regards to I.T. resources. Being cloud-connected and partnered with an ecosystem that is so vast and established also brings with it a massively data-rich environment. Gathering that information and turning it into actionable plans that improve our systems and the communities we serve will mean investments in Data Analysts, Coders, and Business Intelligence expertise. That will mean cultural and transformation changes at a lot of Agencies and with a lot of Agency I.T. Departments. The future is coming fast. Is Public Transit ready?

My 3 key takeaways on AI from SWITCH2024 - Singapore Week of Innovation and Technology (SWITCH): 1. Customized AI models are becoming the new currency. More than 60% of companies plan to fine-tune the models or train from scratch. Important note: you can do it only by having unique, high-quality data. 2. 74% of organizations are currently seeing ROI from their gen AI investments.
