Ensuring adequate and dependable electricity supply across seasons and through increasingly severe weather events is a challenge for any electrical grid. Of some concern, the North American Electric Reliability Corp (NERC) has highlighted “high risks of resource adequacy shortfalls” through 2027, in their Long-Term Reliability Assessments for the United States. Horizon Fuel Cell Group is working with third parties to address Resource Adequacy requirements, as enshrined in legislation in multiple US states, but with an attractive sustainability twist; namely, zero emission power generation on-demand, using hydrogen. Detailed designs for the first fuel cell powerplant are being developed with a partner in the US under an MOU, with additional opportunities in the pipeline. Electrical grids around the world are scrambling to maintain high levels of service and reliability in the face of increased renewable energy in the mix of generation resources, while also addressing a need to reduce the carbon footprint of grid power on which we are all so dependent.  Horizon is best known for high power-density proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, especially in applications such as heavy vehicles. Horizon’s unique, patent pending hybrid fuel cell technology leads the industry in single stack power output, power density and durability. The powerful and compact fuel cells are well suited to demanding applications like power plants, heavy vehicles, ships, and even airplanes.  Having previously deployed stationary powerplants up to 2MW for industrial customers, Horizon now brings clean and green “hydrogen peaker plants” and zero emission AI Datacenters within reach, with plans to deploy 20-50MW systems based on well proven heavy duty 200kW fuel cell modules. Energy storage and portable battery packs, especially lithium iron phosphate packs, retire early after 300-500 cycles due to the attenuation of individual cells. Apulia Technology, through joint development with chip units, launched the first full-string active balancing board to be installed on energy storage and battery packs in China. It is controlled by BMS and is easy to operate, and can be installed in just 15 minutes. As we move towards a greener future, the demand for quick charging electric vehicles is on the rise. However, can our power grids keep up? In a recent article for e27 (Optimatic), I raised an important concern about the power requirements of EV chargers. Did you know that 7000 of the 480kW Ultrafast EV chargers will require the same power as the entire Singapore residential household? It's time to ask ourselves, can we truly afford to have so many? Singapore's Low-Carbon Ammonia Project Gains Momentum Singapore's Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have identified two consortia, out of six, to advance a project focused on utilizing low- or zero-carbon ammonia for electricity generation and bunkering on Jurong Island. The selected consortia will embark on comprehensive studies encompassing engineering, safety, and emergency response protocols. These efforts aim to establish a system capable of producing 55 to 65 MW of power from ammonia and enabling the bunkering of at least 0.1 million tons per annum, commencing with shore-to-ship operations. This endeavor aligns with Singapore's National Hydrogen Strategy, which strives to integrate low-carbon hydrogen as a pivotal tool in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Ammonia, recognized as a leading hydrogen carrier, is under exploration due to its well-established global supply chain. The successful implementation of this venture could position Singapore as a trailblazer in direct ammonia combustion power plants and ammonia bunkering, significantly propelling the usage of low-carbon fuels within international shipping. The EMA, operating under the Ministry of Trade and Industry, focuses on nurturing a clean, resilient, and competitive energy landscape. Meanwhile, the MPA, established in 1996, is dedicated to elevating Singapore's status as a premier global hub port and maritime centre, actively advocating for digitalization and decarbonization within the maritime sector. #Appec 2024 First day, and a measure of doom and gloom seems to permeate the discourse of participants and consultants that have congregated in Singapore, notably around China’s oil demand growth, and the impact that EV penetration has had on its gasoline segment. Some even see contango returning in the oil curve, seemingly in disconnection with projected crude stocks ending at very low levels heading into 2025… Some physical players were reportedly touting an oil handle in the 60s … But: post refinery maintenance, crude runs will rise (maybe not as much as some hope), OPEC+ has not abandoned supply management and is holding off on reinstating supply till year-end (albeit the cutting of Saudi October OSPs to Asia on Arab Light is telling of the mood on the region’s prospective crude demand), the Fed may well engineer a soft landing in the US economy and prompt price structure in Brent still shows backwardation in the prompt months (so some underlying physical strength is lingering). Feedstock demand for the petrochemical sector is positively oriented (which is a comforting thought). All of the above, in my view, and setting aside potential geopolitical developments, will help to keep oil flat price oscillating now in the 70s. A cratering to the low 60s may not be around the corner just yet, well at least in my humble opinion. Can contango come back to set the stage for rebuilding inventories? Fundamentals can be agrued again and again, but watch out for the direction of paper positions of physical players (see Onyx’s proprietary COT data set at https://www.onyxhub.co), that may provide a better indication on which way time spreads will play out. About a carbon offset in Japan. As I've shared about the Japanese GX challenges, renewable energy, battery, hydrogen/ammonia, CCU(e-fuel/e-methane) , and other low-emission solutions in various industries are accelerating. However, those solutions have limitations in achieving zero emission perfectly. Industry players and governmental agencies need a carbon-offset solution. This means that a "baseline and credit" market is expected in Japan, such as J-Credit(https://lnkd.in/g_BDqy5P). Hokkaido is the hot place to produce J-Credit these days. ・Mitsui,Co(trading house) invests in artificial forests in Nayoro and Shibetsu in Hokkaido. The footprint is about 26000ha, and those forests will produce J-Credit equivalent to 580000 t-Co2 in 8 years. ・Hokkaido Gas got ownership of a forest in Minamifrano Town in Hokkaido. It produced J-Credit equivalent to 4500t-CO2 in 7 years and 8 months. ・Itogumi Construction develops a forest in Nakatombetsu Town in Hokkaido. It will produce the J-Credit equivalent to 25295 t-CO2 from FY2023 to FY2038. ・Nippon Steel developed seaweed as "Blue carbon". Nippon Steel used slag which is a byproduct of the steel-making process into the seawater, and seaweed flourishes in the slag. (It is a good idea! Slag as waste is changed to significant item to produce the right of Blue Carbon. The J-Credit is an effective solution for carbon offset in Japan. GX-ETS, which launched in April 2023 voluntarily and will be a full-scale operation from April 2026, is considering using the coexisting market to trade emission rights. Singapore seeks proposals on regulatory sandbox for virtual power plants It is one of various new initiatives by the EMA to develop Singapore’s future grid capabilities Summary: The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore has announced the launch of a regulatory sandbox aimed at testing the capability of virtual power plants (VPPs) to provide electricity to the national grid. In partnership with SP Group, this initiative seeks to explore how VPPs—digital platforms aggregating small-scale distributed energy resources (DERs) such as rooftop solar panels, battery energy storage systems, and EV chargers—can function as a unified power generator, similar to traditional power plants. By consolidating these DERs, which typically wouldn't be viable alone for grid-level services, VPPs unlock the potential for these assets to play a critical role in supporting Singapore's energy transition. In the initial phase, the VPP under development will have a generation capacity of 15 MW from solar photovoltaic sources and battery systems. Its participation in the electricity market will allow the EMA to evaluate its effectiveness in stabilizing the grid, especially as renewable energy grows in Singapore's energy mix. Alongside this, the EMA is expanding its demand response program to include companies with battery storage systems and EV charging networks. ComfortDelGro, a major transport operator, is working with EMA through a regulatory sandbox to test how its network of nearly 1,000 EV charging stations can adjust charging loads during peak periods to balance supply and demand. EMA estimates there is more than 400 MW of untapped demand flexibility in Singapore, offering opportunities for further energy savings and grid stability. How much #gas does the future #electricity grid need? Investors should approach AEMO’s ISP gas generation forecasts with a high degree of caution. IEEFA Asia Pacific's Jay Gordon’s new briefing note examines the ISP forecast for gas generation and finds that gas generation investment opportunities may not be as significant or low-risk as they appear: 📉 The need for gas #power generation is expected to be below historic levels, and very small compared with the expansion of #renewables generation and #storage. On average, gas generators are expected to be used 7% of the time between 2024-50, compared with an average of 19% between 2008-24. ❓ AEMO’s forecasts are based on rapidly evolving assumptions, and carry inherent uncertainties, including the future frequency of ‘low variable #renewableenergy’ events. For example, S&P expects a much lower future contribution of gas generation based on higher gas prices and lower costs for battery storage technologies. 🔋 A range of alternatives may further displace the need for gas generation and costly gas infrastructure upgrades. About the production process of SAF in Japan. SAF itself is a carbon-neutral fuel, but its process is not carbon-neutral because the heat comes from fossil fuels. However, a Japanese plant engineering company realizes its solution(^^)/ On August 28, Kimura Kakoki (https://www.kcpc.co.jp/en/) announced that it had invented a new "heat pump bioethanol distillation device" that reduces CO2 emissions to zero when distilling bioethanol, a raw material for SAF (sustainable aviation fuel). The company developed this device's system and simulation program and applied for a patent. Like the previous model, this new model does not require boiler steam and can be operated using only electricity. The heat pump recovers low-temperature heat emitted from the device and reuses it as effective energy. The device uses a heat pump, which recovers low-temperature heat emitted from the device and reuses it as effective energy. In addition, by using renewable energy electricity and energy-saving techniques in the distillation process, bioethanol can be distilled for SAF raw materials with zero CO2 emissions. In addition, the company has developed a unique new system to improve the recovery rate compared to previous models. In a simulation, the theoretical recovery rate was achieved at 99.0%, and at the same time, the power consumption per product was significantly reduced to 0.7 kWh/L.
