About

As the Founder and CEO of Impact Investment Exchange (IIX) and IIX Foundation, my mission has always been to promote financial inclusivity and sustainability while making a positive social and environmental impact.

At IIX, we’ve developed groundbreaking financial solutions that bridge the gap between traditional capital markets and underserved communities. Our initiatives focus on empowering women and underserved communities, a critical and often overlooked demographic in the financial industry. https://iixglobal.com/

Our accomplishments speak for themselves. We are proud to have pioneered the first social stock exchange and the largest investor matchmaking platform for impact investing in the world - Impact Partners™. Our Women's Livelihood Bond™ Series has received multiple awards for its impact, and we’ve even introduced an entirely new asset class through the Orange Bond Initiative™, which is listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX). We’ve also trained students from all over the world in Impact Investing and Sustainable finance through our Impact Institute™.

To date, our work has spanned 53 countries, unlocked US$288 million of private-sector capital, and positively impacted over 159 million direct and household lives, and avoided over 1.83 million tons of carbon.

Before founding IIX, I gained extensive experience in various fields, including investment banking, development work, and media. As an entrepreneur, I started and successfully sold oneNest, a New York-based e-marketplace for ethical handmade goods.

Throughout my career, I’ve devoted myself to breaking down barriers and building bridges that connect underserved communities to the financial powerhouses of the world. Thanks to our work, millions of women, thousands of entrepreneurs, investors, governments, and impact stakeholders worldwide have had the opportunity to contribute to sustainable development and women's empowerment.

I am proud to have been recognized as a pioneer in impact investing, social entrepreneurship, and women's leadership, receiving notable awards such as Oslo Business for Peace, Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, and Eisenhower Fellowship.

As the author of The Defiant Optimist™ – Daring to Fight Global Inequality, Reinvent Finance, and Invest in Women, my mission today remains focused on sharing insights about inclusion, equity, and enabling finance for the 99%. With a steadfast purpose of creating a positive impact in the world, I am driven by my defiant optimist spirit to create a brighter future for generations to come.

The Defiant Optimist™: Daring to Fight Global Inequality, Reinvent Finance, and Invest in Women

    - Present 2 years

Throughout my career in the financial and impact investing industry, I was inspired by the need to address the growing global inequality, where financial markets disenfranchise women, the 99 percent, and the planet itself. I was determined to find the source of power and turn it inside out, to share it with women across the world whose voices often go unheard. This led me to write my first book, The Defiant Optimist™, where I share my journey of innovation, compassion, and enterprise in the…

This led me to write my first book, The Defiant Optimist™, where I share my journey of innovation, compassion, and enterprise in the impact investing space.

The Defiant Optimist™ offers strategies for placing women, the underserved, and the planet at the heart of systems. From growing up in Bangladesh to becoming a global leader in impact investing, I take my readers on a journey that illustrates what investing in those excluded from networks of power and opportunity requires.

Changing how systems work and who they work for isn't for the faint of heart, but I believe that together, we can locate the levers of power and pull them defiantly in a new direction. Writing this book was a labor of love, and I hope it inspires readers to join the movement for a more equitable and sustainable world.

As the founder and CEO of Impact Investment Exchange (IIX), I have created a new system from scratch to put women, the underserved, and the 99% of the population at the forefront of the capital markets in pursuit of an equitable and climate-resilient world.

With over three decades of experience in the financial and social sectors, I have built IIX into a leading global impact investment organization that is transforming the way the world thinks about finance and being able to “connect the Backstreets to the Wall Streets”.

During my time as a professor, my research focused on impact measurement for the financial markets. I was a key contributor to the creation of IRIS (Impact Reporting Investment Standard). Based on my work, IIX’s impact assessment work and Impact measurement platform, IIX Values have been marked by investors as the “gold standard”.

Through my work at IIX, I have had the privilege of creating innovative financial solutions that unlock capital for underserved communities worldwide. I have facilitated over 60 impactful deals, unlocking $288 million in investment capital, positively impacted over 159 million direct and household lives, and avoided over 1.83 million tons of carbon.

IIX is “By and for the Global South” as I ensure that most of the staff are people from the Global South region to have a greater involvement in a financial industry dominated by the Global North and 1% of the population.

The resources of both governments and traditional philanthropy are either barely growing or in decline, yet the problems of poverty, ill-health, and environmental degradation balloon daily. It is therefore increasingly clear that we urgently need new models for financing and promoting social and environmental objectives. Fortunately, a significant revolution appears to be underway on the frontiers of philanthropy and social investing, tapping not only philanthropy, but also private investment capital, and providing at least a partial response to this dilemma. This book examines the new actors and new tools that form the heart of this revolution, and shows how they are reshaping the way we go about supporting solutions to social and environmental problems throughout the world.

With contributions from leading experts in the field, New Frontiers of Philanthropy provides a comprehensive analysis of the many new institutions that have surfaced on this new frontier of philanthropy and social investment; the new tools and instruments these institutions are bringing to bear; the challenges that these actors and tools still encounter; and the steps that are needed to maximize their impact. The result is a powerful and accessible guide to developments that are already bringing significant new resources into efforts to solve the world's problems of poverty, ill-health, and environmental degradation; unleashing new energies and new sources of ingenuity for social and environmental problem-solving; and generating new hope in an otherwise dismal scenario of lagging resources and resolve. Investors, philanthropists, social entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, business executives, government officials, and students the world over will find much to build on in these pages.
