About
As the Founder and CEO of Impact Investment Exchange (IIX) and IIX Foundation, my mission has always been to promote financial inclusivity and sustainability while making a positive social and environmental impact.
At IIX, we’ve developed groundbreaking financial solutions that bridge the gap between traditional capital markets and underserved communities. Our initiatives focus on empowering women and underserved communities, a critical and often overlooked demographic in the financial industry. https://iixglobal.com/
Our accomplishments speak for themselves. We are proud to have pioneered the first social stock exchange and the largest investor matchmaking platform for impact investing in the world - Impact Partners™. Our Women's Livelihood Bond™ Series has received multiple awards for its impact, and we’ve even introduced an entirely new asset class through the Orange Bond Initiative™, which is listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX). We’ve also trained students from all over the world in Impact Investing and Sustainable finance through our Impact Institute™.
To date, our work has spanned 53 countries, unlocked US$288 million of private-sector capital, and positively impacted over 159 million direct and household lives, and avoided over 1.83 million tons of carbon.
Before founding IIX, I gained extensive experience in various fields, including investment banking, development work, and media. As an entrepreneur, I started and successfully sold oneNest, a New York-based e-marketplace for ethical handmade goods.
Throughout my career, I’ve devoted myself to breaking down barriers and building bridges that connect underserved communities to the financial powerhouses of the world. Thanks to our work, millions of women, thousands of entrepreneurs, investors, governments, and impact stakeholders worldwide have had the opportunity to contribute to sustainable development and women's empowerment.
I am proud to have been recognized as a pioneer in impact investing, social entrepreneurship, and women's leadership, receiving notable awards such as Oslo Business for Peace, Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, and Eisenhower Fellowship.
As the author of The Defiant Optimist™ – Daring to Fight Global Inequality, Reinvent Finance, and Invest in Women, my mission today remains focused on sharing insights about inclusion, equity, and enabling finance for the 99%. With a steadfast purpose of creating a positive impact in the world, I am driven by my defiant optimist spirit to create a brighter future for generations to come.

Financing a sustainable ocean economy
Nature
The ocean, which regulates climate and supports vital ecosystem services, is crucial to our Earth system and livelihoods. Yet, it is threatened by anthropogenic pressures and climate change. A healthy ocean that supports a sustainable ocean economy requires adequate financing vehicles that generate, invest, align, and account for financial capital to achieve sustained ocean health and governance. A healthy ocean that supports a sustainable ocean economy requires adequate financing vehicles that generate, invest, align, and account for financial capital to achieve sustained ocean health and governance. However, the current finance gap is large; we identify key barriers to financing a sustainable ocean economy and suggest how to mitigate them, to incentivize the kind of public and private investments needed for topnotch science and management in support of a sustainable ocean economy.

New Frontiers of Philanthropy: A Guide to the New Tools and New Actors that Are Reshaping Global Philanthropy and Social Investing

The resources of both governments and traditional philanthropy are either barely growing or in decline, yet the problems of poverty, ill-health, and environmental degradation balloon daily. The resources of both governments and traditional philanthropy are either barely growing or in decline, yet the problems of poverty, ill-health, and environmental degradation balloon daily. It is therefore increasingly clear that we urgently need new models for financing and promoting social and environmental objectives. Fortunately, a significant revolution appears to be underway on the frontiers of philanthropy and social investing, tapping not only philanthropy, but also private investment capital, and providing at least a partial response to this dilemma. This book examines the new actors and new tools that form the heart of this revolution, and shows how they are reshaping the way we go about supporting solutions to social and environmental problems throughout the world.
With contributions from leading experts in the field, New Frontiers of Philanthropy provides a comprehensive analysis of the many new institutions that have surfaced on this new frontier of philanthropy and social investment; the new tools and instruments these institutions are bringing to bear; the challenges that these actors and tools still encounter; and the steps that are needed to maximize their impact. The result is a powerful and accessible guide to developments that are already bringing significant new resources into efforts to solve the world's problems of poverty, ill-health, and environmental degradation; unleashing new energies and new sources of ingenuity for social and environmental problem-solving; and generating new hope in an otherwise dismal scenario of lagging resources and resolve. Investors, philanthropists, social entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, business executives, government officials, and students the world over will find much to build on in these pages.Other authorsSee publication -
