Singapore’s Leadership Succession System Leadership succession plans and processes are part of Singapore's sociopolitical culture. They have been made public and are generally accepted by Mr. Wong's colleagues and other key stakeholders. This would be the third time that a smooth transition has been put in place, allowing the next generation of leaders to build on the progress made and take the country to a higher level. This is in line with research that shows that leadership succession plans and processes are crucial for ensuring the stability and effectiveness of governments and organizations. They also contribute to better outcomes, outputs, and impacts. Singapore's national leaders, from the first generation to the fourth generation, understand that effective organizations depend on strong leadership and teamwork. Therefore, they have implemented a rigorous system and continuously improved it to identify, select, test, groom, mold, and shape leaders not only for the public sector but also for other sectors and at every level of society. They have established an unprecedented succession system in the sociopolitical arena to ensure that Singapore will always have capable leaders to serve both the present and the future. Just as importantly, they are aware that many effective leaders do not volunteer themselves or aspire to be national leaders. They recognize the biblical insight that leaders are often those who may not seek leadership roles. This line of thought has been supported by thought leaders throughout history. Socrates posited that the best people have to be forced to rule. Plato suggested, in an unintuitive manner, that the most important qualification for a leader is to not desire leadership. Lao Tzu, in 'Dao De Jing,' proposed that good leaders may not seek prominence. Leadership guru Warren Bennis was quoted as saying that most people who become good leaders do not set out with the intention of becoming leaders. The national leaders of Singapore make significant efforts to cast a wide net and seek out the best talents. They inspire, influence, persuade, and encourage these talents to step out of their comfort zones and make sacrifices to contribute to society by assuming national leadership positions, thereby building a brighter future for the current and future generations. When there are honest and effective leaders, it becomes easier to earn the trust of the people. According to the 2023 Edelman Trust Barometer, the Singapore government remains one of the most trusted institutions in the world. When these competent leaders work effectively as a team, they create a synergistic effect that can have a positive and growing impact on the economy and society. A timely reminder when we get frustrated at the problems we face at work. Be kinder and gentler to those who made a mistake. We all need a break sometimes. I am in fund management because in this industry, the mistakes that we may make, hardly anyone died from them. Specifically I chose to be in PE, where there are no daily marked to market volatility and typically no leverage to trigger forced selling at the absolute worst time to sell. Having help manage a PE portfolio diversified over vintage years, geography, industry, sub-asset classes over the last 20 years, I know that as long as we persevere, we can always recover from our occassional losses, and still outperform public markets in the long run. It is stressful at times, but done correctly, no one gets hurt, and everyone can retire well. Here's my heartfelt salute to all those who really deal with life and death issues in their daily work. The closest I do that is related to life and death issue is to invest in life settlement funds. #PE

Thank You, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong During his tenure as Prime Minister and Finance Minister from 2001 to 2007, Mr Lee Hsien Loong steered Singapore's economy to new heights, cementing the city-state's status as a thriving global hub of innovation and commerce. Under his astute leadership, Singapore navigated multiple economic crises, including the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-2009 and the COVID-19 pandemic, emerging stronger each time. PM Lee's strategic economic policies and foresight have been instrumental in driving Singapore's remarkable growth and development. Singapore's GDP more than doubled to over $673.3 billion by 2023, compared with $194.4 billion in 2004. The GDP per capita surged to around $113,779, compared with $46,664 in 2004. Based on studies done by the International Monetary Fund, Singapore is among the top 10 worldwide in terms of living standards. This stellar economic performance was underpinned by PM Lee's focus on transforming Singapore into a global financial hub and stimulating innovations that have kept the economy globally competitive. When the Global Financial Crisis struck in 2008, PM Lee's prudent stewardship guided Singapore to a swift V-shaped recovery, with GDP expanding by an impressive 14.5% in 2010. Similarly, despite the significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore's healthcare system demonstrated remarkable resilience and preparedness. Singapore generally avoided the overwhelming strain experienced in many other countries. Furthermore, Singapore's robust financial reserves, accumulated under PM Lee's tenure. It enabled the government to implement substantive support measures that helped the economy weather the pandemic's economic impacts and mitigated the severity of the downturn. PM Lee's visionary launch of the Smart Nation initiative in 2014 set Singapore on a strategic course towards comprehensive digital transformation. This initiative has positioned the country at the forefront of leveraging technology and data to enhance living standards, create greater economic opportunities, and strengthen social cohesion within communities. The foresight proved invaluable during the COVID-19 recession, as strategic investments in higher value-added sectors helped power the recovery. In addition to driving economic progress, PM Lee has also made significant strides in improving social welfare. The median income for full-time employees nearly doubled under his tenure, with lower-income Singaporeans benefiting even more, as their wages more than doubled. Social spending tripled to $53 billion by 2023, expanding healthcare for an aging population and addressing inequality through government interventions and transfers. Meritocracy: Boon or Bane? Minister Chan Chun Sing is sending signals that his ministry is driving a mindset shift. This is based on feedback from the Forward Singapore Movement, an initiative that has involved more than 200,000 people over more than 16 months. Formal education has been developed from what researchers call a human capital model. There’s a high degree of focus on academic achievements and economic pursuits, with less emphasis on developing character and values. This process indirectly endorses high achievers, while the rest may feel left out and even left behind. Meritocracy has somewhat taken on a negative connotation in recent years. Its outcomes have been deemed self-serving and divisive, and it has not delivered on its perceived promise to elevate society in terms of tackling social injustice and promoting equality and progress for all. Perhaps the fault lies not in meritocracy itself but in the widely accepted meaning of and motivations driving meritocracy. The purpose of meritocracy is to unite, not divide, the people, and to advance their interests rather than serve any personal agendas. It aims to raise the tide for all - not just for exclusive groups - to achieve a better standard of living. Therefore, meritocracy should not be about winning but about leading others. Winning is about playing a short-term zero-sum game. It involves forging ahead at the expense of others, achieving better results, and leaving others behind. In short, others must lose for someone to win. On the other hand, leading is about playing a positive-sum game. It’s about guiding others while also leading oneself. It involves sharing the responsibility of helping those who do not enjoy the same position and advantages as oneself. This approach produces better results while reaching out to help others raise their levels of performance and achievement. In doing so, nobody has to struggle with comparisons or engage in unhealthy competition to get ahead. There’s no need to stumble over each other and become stressed out in pursuit of a lose-lose destination. The end result of playing a positive-sum game is that both the leader and their team can accomplish more and make a more positive impact on the people and environment around them. 🔝🏢Investors see limited appeal in🇭🇰Hong Kong property🔻⚠️ Poor investor sentiment is reflected in a depressed sector, from low occupancy to falling profits. There's a strong sense that Hong Kong needs to reinvent itself before investors return. Stemming the continuing decline of Hong Kong's real estate market will not be easy, with negative #investor sentiment crowding in on the territory despite the declining interest rate trend. "We're in a different world now. I don't see many foreigners or real estate funds investing in Hong Kong real estate, at this point in time," Arbutus' Timothy Tsui told AsianInvestor. Arbutus is a multi-#familyoffice based in Hong Kong. Residential #property prices have fallen almost 25% from the all-time high in September 2021, with transaction volume continuing to decline, according to research from global commercial #realestate specialist CBRE The underpinning of the Hong Kong property market by cash-rich mainlanders is now a flawed assumption, said Tsui. "Even if a property was 30-40% off, who would buy it? If you are expecting the Chinese super-rich to step up, there's only a certain amount of that kind of #capital around." Tsui believes Chinese real estate investors are wary after the collapse of Evergrande and other mainland developers. For the average #HongKong private #banking client with #exposure to the sector, "I'm guessing you'd be quite cautious until you got that #money back," said Tsui. The rental decline in mainland China tier 1 cities is unlikely to moderate given the significant supply-demand imbalance, according to #CBRE. #Houseprices in #China remain on a downward spiral, with a glut of unsold properties emphasising the scale of the problem. A SECTOR IN DECLINE❓⚠️ With top hotels in Hong Kong only half full and office vacancy rates in the Central business district of 40% not uncommon, Hong Kong appears to have priced itself out. Local developers including Hongkong Land, Sun Hung Kai and Sino Land have all recently reported a sharp drop in profits. Businesses that are not tied to Central Hong Kong can find rents in Shenzhen that are now 50% cheaper. Operating costs can also be commensurately lower. What has changed for medical investment in China during this “Capital Winter”? I was in Korea last week but didn’t miss out on the Gaorong Capital高榕资本’s Annual Healthcare CEO Conference & Demo Day in Shanghai. It’s a close-door event hosted by Gao Rong, a leading VC in China, attended by representatives from their healthcare portfolio companies, LPs, and other investment partners. It was a great opportunity to share my thoughts on why Chinese healthcare innovators need a mindset shift to achieve their Go Global aspirations. It was also a valuable learning experience for me. Here are a few takeaways from the event: 1️⃣ New Opportunities in the “Capital Winter”: While people are talking about the "capital winter" in China, funding is still available there, and it's still more substantial compared to many other parts of the world. However, new IPO regulations have made exits significantly harder, leading investors to become more cautious and selective. They are increasingly exploring alternative opportunities, such as overseas deals and acquisitions of corporate assets. 2️⃣ Survival of the Fittest: Biotech companies that once saw big investments in China are now facing tough times for the subsequent rounds due to IPO challenges. Only those with strong resilience and adaptation are likely to survive, while others may disappear. This may not be a bad thing, as it's a natural process to eliminate excess and encourage more rational competition. 3️⃣ Increased Focus on Commercial Viability: With IPOs becoming difficult, investors are paying more attention to the commercial growth of their companies. They’re helping with business development, fundraising, and even global expansion. No one knows how long this "winter" will last, but investors are finding creative ways to support their portfolio companies and each other.  🌍 It’s all about adapting and staying strong! Notably, the emergence of PT Amman Mineral Internasional ($46.59 billion) reflects Indonesia’s abundant natural resources and their growing importance in the international market. The leading companies in the region span beyond these fields. Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) ($46.50 billion) and Bank Mandiri ($38.08 billion) further underscore Indonesia’s banking prowess, while Singapore’s United Overseas Bank ($37.65 billion) contributes another major financial institution to the list. Most Asean equity fund managers are cautious about putting money in new economy companies that have sprouted in South-east Asia from changing consumer behaviour as a result of digitalisation. Portfolios today are still dominated by well-established, money-making old economy stocks of banks, industrial conglomerates and telecommunications providers instead of younger companies in e-commerce, digital entertainment and online ride-hailing. A few fund managers have capitalised on early investments in such stocks like Sea, Grab and GoTo Gojek Tokopedia, but most have opted for a more conservative approach, avoiding these high-risk sectors altogether, said analyst Hunter Beaudoin at Morningstar Manager Research Services Asia.
