Synergy in Private 5G and AI Cloud The RAN-in-the-Cloud solution offers an answer to the challenge of underutilization of vRAN computing resources by introducing dynamic resource allocation, and sharing the computing resources with AI workloads. It uses the flexible architecture of cloud computing to dynamically scale network functions up or down based on real-time demand, optimizing server utilization and reducing costs. At last week's Linux Foundation ONE Summit 2024, which I attended, NVIDIA and Aarna Networks jointly introduced a great solution for the Private '5G and AI' Cloud scenario. Of course, their ambitions don't stop at private networks and clouds, but for this post, I cover only the private 5G network and AI cloud environment. According to the architecture they created, here is how it works: ◼ Orchestrate Core, RAN Functions, Prometheus Agents: The central orchestrator (Aarna Networks' AMCOP's BPMN Workflow Engine in this case) manages the deployment and orchestration of Core and RAN functions. It also ensures that Prometheus agents are set up for network monitoring. The Core and RAN (CU1, CU2, DU1, DU2) functions are set up on two separate servers, labeled gNB S1 and gNB S2, along with the Prometheus agents. ◼ Telemetry Agents Report RAN Workload Level Metrics: Admin User configures the Threshold values on OPA (Open Policy Agent), for closed loop to be activated. The Threshold Checking Application (TCA) receives telemetry data via the telemetry agents in 5G Core. The telemetry data includes metrics collected from pods (isolated containers within Kubernetes clusters), providing insights into the performance and resource usage of each RAN function. The Prometheus agents deployed on each gNB S1 and gNB S2 monitor RAN functions like DU1 and DU2, sending metrics back to TCA for threshold checking. ◼ Workflow Engine Scales DU and Edge Application: Based on thresholds set, for example 20% utilization, in the OPA, the Workflow Engine (WFE) scales Distributed Units (DUs) and edge applications as needed. The scaling action takes place within the edge cloud servers. Edge Multi-Cluster Orchestrator (EMCO) and CDS (Controller Design Studio) migrates/reconfigures DU2 to Server#1 (nondisruptive), and the CU on Server#2 deleted. The Lifecycle Manager (LCM) reconfigures the fronthaul switch. This ensures that RAN traffic is routed appropriately to other RAN components after CU2 is deleted. Finally, AI/ML application is deployed on MEC Server#1, and Collectors/Kafka/OPA continue to monitor the threshold metrics for when to reverse the situation. Overall, the combination of cloud architecture and dynamic resource allocation by empowers private 5G customers to achieve high-quality, cost-effective private 5G RAN networks, and run AI workloads simultaneously. The New Subsea Cables RFS 2025 Series: Asia Link Cable (ALC) Type of Cable System: Latest Generation Coherent Optics.  Open Cable System: Yes, and possibly a Southeast Asia first. Consortium Members: China Telecom, Singtel, Globe Telecom (Philippines), DITO (Philippines), Singtel, Malaysia Telecom, Global Transit, and UNN (Brunei).  Construction Status: On schedule.  Number of Fibre Pairs: 8.  Estimated RFS: 3Q2025. Day One Throughput: 144 Tbps.  Salient Features: Three digit terabit cable between Singapore, China, HK, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Philippines. ALC connects Brunei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, and China. It is a 8 fibre pair system with minimum throughput per pair of 18 terabits per second. Hauwei Marine is building the system which should be ready for service 3Q2025. The project co-leads are Singtel and China Telecom. Hauwei's involvement will deter many foreign carriers from using the cable's transport services, but there are extensive commercial ties and strong telecom traffic flows between Singapore, China, and Hong Kong that should sustain the project. It is interesting to note that ALC is an open cable system, which means each consortium member selects their own line termination gear. In general, there are two types of Southeast Asian cable projects, those going to the US and not touching China and vice versa. Singapore and Tokyo are the neutral telecom hubs that unite these disparate networks (to the extent possible given China's Great Cyber Wall). Construction cost was $300 million. Reports in Vietnamese publications indicate that FPT Telecom, a Vietnam ISP and telecommunicatiobns provider, will join the consortium and put $87 million into the project in exchange for a Vietnam branch and capacity on the system. FPT competes against the two Vietnam incumbents, Vietel and VNPT. Subsea cable ownership will lower FPT's costs of connecting to Singapore and allow it to do more international peering and buy more transit from more competitive Tier 1 ISPs like Hurricane Electric and PCCW as opposed to its two larger rivals. #subseacables #internetinfrastructure

Enhancing Multi-Vendor Interoperability with the 3GPP Network Resource Model (NRM) ◼ Introduction to the NRM The Network Resource Model (NRM) is a critical framework developed by 3GPP to support the management and orchestration of 5G networks. The NRM represents the manageable aspects of these networks through an information model, defined according to specifications from various 3GPP working groups and the requirements of the 5G management architecture and operations. At its core, the NRM describes network resources as discrete entities within an object-oriented environment, managed through abstract entities known as Information Object Classes (IOCs). These IOCs, along with their attributes and relationships, are essential for effective network management. The NRM is specified in three stages: - Requirements Level (Stage 1): Defines conceptual use cases and requirements for network resources. - Information Service (IS) Level (Stage 2): Provides a technology-independent specification focusing on semantics between management consumers and producers. - Solution Set (SS) Level (Stage 3): Maps IS definitions into technology-specific solution sets, ensuring adaptability without altering core definitions. ◼ Facilitating Multi-Vendor Interoperability - Separation of Stages 2 and 3: Ensures new technologies can be integrated without changing existing specifications. - Protocol Technology Independence: Decouples definitions from specific protocols, allowing flexibility while maintaining interoperability. - Umbrella Information Model (UIM): Harmonizes various domain-specific models. - Standardized Naming and Containment: Ensures different implementations can recognize and interact with each other correctly, crucial for multi-vendor environments. ◼ Integration with O-RAN: The NRM's standardized approach and the flexibility of the YANG solution set facilitate seamless integration with O-RAN architectures. Introducing O-RAN Y1 Near Real-Time RIC open interface The Y1, O-RAN ALLIANCE's new open interface, introduces a dynamic pathway for enhanced communication and analytics between the near-real-time RAN Intelligent Controller (near-RT RIC) and both internal and external systems. This interface is not just a technical addition; it’s a strategic enabler that broadens the scope of O-RAN capabilities towards more adaptive, intelligent, and integrated network operations. ◼ Y1 Open Interface The Y1 interface in the O-RAN architecture facilitates the sharing of Radio Analytics Information (RAI) from the near-RT RIC to various authorized consumers. These consumers can range from internal components like non-RT RICs and SMO, to external third-party applications. The fundamental role of the Y1 interface is to allow for the subscription and consumption of RAN analytics data, which are vital for enhancing network performance and user experiences. This interface supports robust mutual authentication and authorization protocols, ensuring that only authorized entities can access the sensitive and critical data being transmitted. The Y1 interface is designed to be flexible, supporting consumers both within the PLMN trusted domain, such as NWDAF and multi-RAT dynamic spectrum sharing applications, and outside it through a secure exposure function. ◼ Key Benefits of Y1 - Enhanced Network Intelligence and Optimization The Y1 interface enables the near-RT RIC to transmit vital RAN insights such as QoE and other operational metrics to different network components. This transmission of data supports more informed decision-making processes and facilitates network adjustments in real-time, optimizing both network performance and resource allocation. - Expanded Ecosystem and Multi-Vendor Interoperability By standardizing the way that RAN analytics are shared, the Y1 interface encourages a broader ecosystem of applications and services to integrate seamlessly with O-RAN networks. - Scalability and Flexibility The Y1 interface is designed to be scalable, handling varying levels of data traffic and accommodating growing network demands without degradation in performance. In emergency scenarios, timely and accurate data transmission is crucial. sXGP standard (ARIB STD-T118 = B39, 1.9GHz TD-LTE unlicensed band in Japan) has been updated on 29th Oct, and the sXGP device is officially allowed to be used for Drone and UAVs. the sXGP could have 2x more range than WiFi and have great stability because of the 3GPP system. Also, roaming between sXGP private networks and Mobile carrier's network (MNO) is allowed by regulation. CelcomDigi has submitted its proposal to Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to deploy Malaysia’s second #5G network. We believe that CelcomDigi is in a strong position to build an advanced 5G network, with its nationwide and modern 5G-ready infrastructure, financial strength, and track record. Within a year, CelcomDigi has upgraded more than 50% of its network, way ahead of its three-year integration target. At the current run-rate, CelcomDigi is set to upgrade 75% of its network by end 2024. SBA-based O-RAN Architecture: Paving the Way for 6G Open RAN Service Based Architecture (SBA) can play a crucial role in O-RAN by enabling a modular approach where different RAN functions can be independently developed and managed, yet seamlessly integrated. Moreover, Open RAN (O-RAN) architectures further the principles of SBA by promoting open interfaces and interoperability among different vendors' equipment. ◼ Background Traditional RAN architectures were predominantly monolithic, which often limited flexibility and scalability. However, the recent shift towards a more service-oriented framework, known as Service-Based Architecture, has begun to address these limitations. SBA in cellular networks, primarily seen in 5G core networks, involves transitioning from conventional telecommunication protocol interfaces to more dynamic service based interfaces (SBIs), where network functions (NFs) communicate via web-based Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) using protocols like HTTP/2 and JSON. ◼ Virtualization and Cloud Technologies in RAN The concept of virtualized RAN (vRAN) has emerged alongside developments in virtualization and cloud technologies. vRAN allows RAN functions to be hosted on generic computing platforms, separating the hardware from the software to enable greater flexibility and cost efficiency. This shift is supported by the broader adoption of cloud-native principles, which facilitate the deployment, scaling, and management of network functions as services across a distributed architecture. ◼ Challenges and Innovations While SBA and Open RAN bring numerous advantages, including improved scalability and operational flexibility, they also introduce challenges. Traditional RAN systems are built on rigid, often proprietary architectures that lack the agility needed in modern mobile network environments. The transition to SBA in RANs, therefore, requires rethinking network control and management to support a more decentralized and service-oriented model. Moreover, implementing SBA in Open RAN involves overcoming technical hurdles related to RAN performance, interoperability, security, and the integration of new and legacy technologies. The complexity of the control plane in traditional RAN architectures, as evidenced in 4G and 5G, necessitates a simplified approach in future iterations like 6G, where a leaner control plane focused primarily on connectivity and security could streamline operations and reduce overhead. SMO: Chapter 2 in the O-RAN Journey From O-RAN ALLIANCE's visionary beginnings to the successful commercialization of key chapters like Open Fronthaul and Service Management and Orchestration (SMO), the O-RAN journey embodies the spirit of openness, interoperability, and software-defined RAN orchestration. ◼ Chapter 1: Open Fronthaul - The First Milestone The O-RAN journey embarked on its initial chapter with the introduction of Open Fronthaul, a pivotal step toward realizing the alliance's vision. Open Fronthaul aimed to horizontally disaggregate the traditional base station architecture, separating the radio unit (RU) from the digital unit (DU) and enabling interoperability between components from different vendors. Through collaborative efforts within the O-RAN Alliance, the Open Fronthaul specification was developed and successfully commercialized, marking a significant milestone. ◼ Chapter 2: SMO - A New Horizon As the journey progressed, the O-RAN Alliance embarked on its second chapter - SMO combined with non-real-time (>1 sec) RIC. Recognizing the need for efficient management and orchestration of diverse vendors' network elements and functions, SMO emerged as a crucial component. By automating and orchestrating network resources, SMO enables operators to adapt quickly to changing demands, optimize resource utilization, and accelerate service delivery. Crucially, the relevance of SMO extends beyond the O-RAN Alliance, with strong synergies existing between O-RAN SMO and projects within the LF Networking ecosystem. Projects such as Nephio and ONAP are actively engaged in SMO-related efforts, collaborating to integrate O-RAN requirements into their respective frameworks. ◼ Deutsche Telekom's T-NAP Story: A Testament to Collaboration It's noteworthy to highlight my company Deutsche Telekom's (DT) engagement with the Linux Foundation Open Source Community. DT is actively involved in the open-source community, contributing to and collaborating with the Nephio and ONAP projects. This involvement encompasses participation in LFN leadership and leveraging community feedback and developments to enhance DT's O-RAN SMO, known as T-NAP. DT exemplifies a commitment to driving industry-wide progress and fostering a more open, interoperable, and efficient O-RAN ecosystem. I presented on this O-RAN SMO vision at the Linux Foundation Networking ONE Summit 2024 in San Jose this week, and OSC, the O-RAN Alliance open source community, hosted a successful workshop as a part of the event. In addition, our strategic partnership with the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance, as shown in the picture below, is also providing important momentum for the successful achievement of the Chapter 2 milestone. At MWC Shanghai 2024, I had the pleasure of interviewing Anna Yip, Deputy CEO for Singapore Consumer and CEO of Business Development at Singtel, on the company's innovative use of AI and 5G technology. Anna shared how Singtel is leveraging AI to transform customer service, by implementing a system that summarises, synthesises, and highlights key customer issues. This not only empowers their agents to deliver faster, more personalised support but also makes the job more engaging and rewarding for employees. Singtel is also harnessing AI to revolutionise marketing communications, enabling the development and testing of campaigns at a faster pace. As a pioneer in 5G, Singtel was one of the first operators to deploy a standalone 5G network. Anna highlighted how this technology is already being used to transform industries such as auto making, chipmaking, and logistics, with the promise of much more innovation to come. The conversation highlighted Singtel's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve customer experience and drive innovation in the telecommunications industry. I was particularly impressed by their focus on using AI not just for efficiency but also to enhance the quality of jobs for their employees. Inside 3GPP’s AI/ML and Data Analytics Innovations Similar to the active AI/ML & RIC discussions within the O-RAN ALLIANCE, AI/ML initiatives in 3GPP are also thriving. In fact, 3GPP has already established substantial standards related to data analytics and Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM). ◼ Data Collection Mechanisms To enhance data collection capabilities, in 3GPP release 17, mechanisms for file retrieval, download, and methods for controlling the production, collection, coordination, and discovery of management data have been introduced. This includes: MDT (Minimization of Drive Tests) Trace Data QoE (Quality of Experience) Measurements Performance Measurements Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) External Management Data Intelligence and Automation Capabilities ◼ Autonomous Network Levels (ANL): The levels of autonomy are standardized by ANL, which highlights the collaboration between human operators and telecom systems. Various enabler capabilities support different levels of autonomy, including: Self-Organization Networks (SON) Management Data Analytics (MDA) Intent-Driven Management (IDM) Closed Loop Service Level Specification Assurance (COSLA) These capabilities are evaluated using a framework approach detailed in TS 28.100. ◼ Intent-Driven Management (IDM) IDM simplifies network management by focusing on high-level goals and constraints (intents) rather than intricate details of network resources. This approach works in conjunction with closed-loop automation to continually meet the expectations specified by the intent. A closed control loop automatically adjusts and optimizes the services provided over the 5G network based on various performance management inputs, QoE data, and the state of the network. ◼ Closed Loop Service Level Specification Assurance (COSLA) COSLA is a mechanism designed to ensure that communication services continuously meet the expected quality levels as defined by Service Level Specifications (SLS). This is achieved through automated reconfiguration of the mobile network in response to performance degradations or predicted impacts on service objectives. ◼ Management Data Analytics (MDA) Management data analytics involves processing and analyzing data related to network and service events and statuses using AI and ML technologies. These analytics provide recommendations to enable necessary actions for network and service operations, enhancing overall performance and reliability. The achievements in Release 17 of the 3GPP SA5 working group have significantly bolstered the provisioning, data collection, and management capabilities of 5G networks. This capability allows network operators to test and optimize strategies in virtual environments, reducing the need for costly real-world deployments and enabling quicker adaptation to changing conditions. ◼ Enhanced Security Measures: With the increasing threat landscape, security is paramount in network operations. Generative AI can simulate cyber-attacks, enabling the development of robust defense mechanisms. By generating synthetic attack data, these models help improve the training of defensive algorithms, ensuring better preparedness against actual threats. ◼ Improved Spectrum Management: Generative AI can be utilized to mimic radio frequency conditions, aiding in spectrum management—a critical aspect of RAN operations. This application not only helps in optimizing frequency allocation but also ensures compliance with regulatory standards without the need for extensive physical field tests. ◼ Fault Detection and Maintenance: The predictive capabilities of generative AI can revolutionize network maintenance and fault detection.
