X-Billion Data - The National University of Singapore (NUS) has a significant focus on data centres. Here are some key initiatives: 1. **Sustainable Tropical Data Centre Testbed (STDCT)**¹²: This is the first data centre testbed in the tropics, set up to enhance Singapore’s competitiveness in sustainable and efficient data centre solutions, especially for the region’s challenging high-temperature and humidity operations¹. The STDCT is more than a physical facility; it's a technology and operator agnostic co-innovation programme to closely engage different stakeholders in the data centre industry¹. The testbed facility is expected to result in at least a 25 percent reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional air-cooled data centres¹. This programme is jointly funded by the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF), and anchor industry partner Facebook¹². 2. **Data Analytics Consulting Centre (DACC)**³: The Faculty of Science’s DACC offers consulting services and executive courses, helping organisations to unlock the value of Big Data for business growth and transformation³. 3. **Institute of Data Science**⁵: This institute serves as the focal point for data science research at NUS, leveraging expertise from multiple Schools and Faculties to tackle problems from multifaceted perspectives⁵. I was delighted to hear Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's emphasis on the simplification of doing business in Singapore during the recent National Day Rally. As a robotics startup, we have faced many challenges in bringing our innovative solutions to the market, especially in terms of regulatory compliance and approval. One of the areas that we are most looking forward is the possibility of multiple agencies working together to simplify the application procedures for robots to travel on public roads for delivery, cleaning and patrolling. This would open up a huge opportunity for many local robotics companies to deploy their robots in various sectors and scenarios, such as e-commerce, hospitality, security and more. We believe that these robots can provide a safe, efficient and convenient service to the public, while reducing the reliance on human labor and resources. Another area that we are looking forward to is the integration of robots with lifts, which many Asian countries have already implemented. This would enable mobile robots to access different floors of buildings and deliver goods or perform tasks without human intervention. This would also enhance the user experience and satisfaction, as well as the productivity and profitability of our clients. We are grateful to the Prime Minister and the government for their vision and support for the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in Singapore. We hope that the simplification of doing business in Singapore will become a reality soon, and that we can contribute to the nation's growth and development with our robotics solutions.

HOT days - let’s muse about ESS and Aircon - This article has an interesting idea - make aircon system an energy storage system (#ESS) as well. This makes perfect sense for Singapore three degree north of the equator. Let’s call this ACESS. The idea of charging up ACESS with #renewable energies, such as Solar, for supplying aircon to cool the environment, may fit #Singapore context - 90% of the citizens live in a home they own, and these housing are like matrices (pigeon holes the western term). The government are in the process of installing solar on most of these roofs (after 20+ year of deliberations; the problem - some ‘experts’ said Singapore has too many clouds!) . SG has strong sunlight for more than 6 hours each day. SG also has done massive work in centralization of cooling system in the Central Business District for energy efficiency. While ACESS may not offset entire energy need from the aircons at home, through intelligent load shifting this can allow the grid provider (#spower) to manage peaks. The ACESS is also a form of resilience in SG’s Total Defence. This may be important in the near future (goal : beyond 2040 100% EV), where #EV charging at night will pick up energy slack at night to keep generator runnings. The problem - who should pick up the bills of this fancy ACESS? Does it make sense for ACESS to gain offset using renewables? There is/are economics here to work out, including carbon credits maths. #esg #sdg Nevertheless, for a HOT #SG , above 30C most days, with a population bent on setting aircon at 25C at home and office, #energy consumption is an “existential” threat; increasing high dependencies on energy imports. Singapore can’t afford to let sudden layoffs become the norm 📈 Redundancies are inevitable in any industry, but can we do more to reduce the ‘shock’ factor that we’re seeing in tech? As the New Industrialization era, it will be the norm to see Disruption in jobs, careers and livelihoods. This is inevitable to many Singaporeans, unless we are on the forefront of Change, rather than Status Quo. The challenge for our Singapore Government 🇸🇬 on how to deal with this profound and fundamental shift in economic relevance, the largest tectonic movement since the 1940s after the 2nd World War, as Hewlett-Packard was founded in 1939 thru the Semiconductor revolutionary invention of the 3rd Industrial period. Nobody in Singapore, involved in pre-Silicon Valley, is still economically active here; therefore, we are on our own to derive how Singaporeans need to deal with this Disruption. I propose Singapore to setup a Taskforce with deep Technology experience and knowhow of members, namely: • Corporate Operations Experience • University Tech Research Lab • Professional Practitioner Formulate recommendations and strategies to the Singapore Government on how to work thru this Transition and Transformation towards Industry 5.0 as Machine Intelligence, powered by Digitalization, Robotics AI and Autonomous Technology. * While I am just another very ordinary Singapore-born 55-years old Singaporean Scientist Engineer in Singapore 🇸🇬

🌟 Amazed by the versatility of LLMs like ChatGPT! 🌟 At EDUtech Asia, I found myself collecting a handful of business cards from brilliant minds, thought leaders and vendors. But as the cards piled up, I started wondering if there might be a more efficient way to get all that info into my smartphone contacts without manually typing each one. So, almost as a shot in the dark, I thought, "Why not ask ChatGPT?" Turns out, ChatGPT could do exactly that! By simply uploading an image of a business card, it helped extract the details and even generated a .vcf file for a seamless import into my contacts. Not only did it save me time, but it also highlighted something important: You never know unless you ask! With technology evolving at this pace, there are so many hidden capabilities we might overlook. Sometimes, just asking the right question can open doors to unexpected solutions. 💡 A big shoutout to the continuous innovation in AI and LLMs! Another batch of 64 students at Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) finished the #IoT program recently, with a group project presentation (total 16 proposals) on "Food Waste Tracking System." 🟢 Food waste is a big issue, not only in Singapore but also globally. Food waste is one of the biggest waste streams in Singapore and the amount of food waste generated has grown by around 20% over the last 10 years. Food waste accounted for about 11 per cent of the total waste generated in Singapore in 2023. The total amount of food waste generated in 2023 was 755,000 tones. 🟢 They all had to also work "individually" on another problem: "Artificial Intelligence and IoT Enabled Construction Monitoring System (AICMS) can minimize construction equipment failures and downtime with better monitoring and prediction, a better monitoring of environment health and safety (EHS) risks at site, hence reduce cost of operations, while targeting some of the 17 SDGs." They had to: - analyse industry and specific operational challenges. - define and prioritize problems, create improved workflow - evaluate and select the right technologies, and propose end-to-end solutions, considering cyber risks - propose a business model matrix to reduce cost and to create new values. - estimate RoI and propose a commercial model to sell the solution to me (the customer) Given the complexity of the topics and the time they had, while many of them are working full time, I am very happy with their work, specially seeing some of them putting extra efforts in their report, making difficult for me to evaluate. Assignments asides, my goal has always been to provide students with insights and #criticalthinking skills with real world examples where they learn skills they can apply in their work today and think differently in the future to make this world better place to live and work with #Tech.
