Strategy issued to develop Vietnam’s semiconductor industry Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has outlined a bold vision for Vietnam's semiconductor industry, unveiling a comprehensive strategy set to unfold by 2030, with ambitions reaching up to 2050. The strategy aims to position Vietnam as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain. The country plans to develop the industry in three phases. In the first from 2024 - 2030, it will make use of geopolitical and workforce advantages, selectively attract foreign direct investment (FDI), establish itself as one of the global semiconductor manpower centres, and grow fundamental capacity in all steps, from research, design, and manufacturing to packaging and testing. In the second from 2030 - 2040, Vietnam will work to become a global semiconductor and electronics centre while developing the semiconductor and electronics industries that combine both self-reliance and FDI. For the third phase from 2040 - 2050, it looks to become one of the world’s leaders in the semiconductor and electronics industries, and master research and development (R&D) in these fields. Setting concrete targets for each phase, Vietnam is eyeing impressive figures, with the semiconductor industry expected to generate over 25 billion USD in annual revenue by 2030 and grow sustainably thereafter. The workforce is also a focal point, with plans to train over 50,000 engineers and graduates to meet the industry's evolving demands. As Vietnam progresses towards becoming a global semiconductor and electronics hub by 2040, the roadmap includes expanding manufacturing capabilities, fostering innovation, and achieving self-sufficiency in design and production technologies. The ultimate goal is to lead the semiconductor and electronics sectors by 2050, with annual revenues projected to surpass 1 trillion USD and drive significant added value growth. In life, I do believed that employers have try to compensate their employees as much they wish, in other hand employers also facing pressures for raising operation cost like rental, materials cost and labor related cost in general; revenue would face challenge from their prospective clients who always cried for lower implementation budget but expecting superior in solutions and materials’ used. Unsatisfied employees always have the avenue to jump ship for the better, provided all aspect fit and match. Unsustainable employers now have their choices to source for more affordable labor supports locally or elsewhere. Worst cases would be relocation to better business environment location in the region. In the began AI era like today, all related parties would be encourage to brainstorm the future working life could be coexist healthily beside the employers and employees matters, the AI would there be your tools, your coworkers, or being your successors, decision would be on the human hands.

NXP Semiconductors and TSMC-backed Vanguard International have announced a joint venture to construct a $7.8 billion wafer chip fabrication facility in Singapore. This collaboration marks a substantial boost for Singapore's ambitions within the tech sector and aligns with the global trend of geographic diversification in chip manufacturing. The new plant will focus on the production of 12-inch wafers for mature chips (130nm to 40nm), catering to critical functions in automotive, industrial, consumer, and mobile products. This development underscores the increasing importance of Southeast Asia as a chip manufacturing hub, driven by factors like cost competitiveness, talent availability and proximity to major Asian markets.

INFINEON’S €7 BILLION WORLD'S LARGEST, RESOURCE-EFFICIENT 200MM SIC POWER FAB IN KEDAH MALAYSIA TO CREATE 1,500 HIGH-VALUE JOBS Recognising the rapid growth of power semiconductors driven by decarbonisation, particularly those based on wide bandgap materials, Infineon Technologies AG, a leader in Power Systems and IoT, is taking a significant step to shape the industry by expanding its Kulim 3 fab building on the investment announced in February 2022. Infineon will invest an additional €5 billion for Phase 2, on top of the original €2 billion for Phase 1, to construct the world’s largest 200-millimetre silicon carbide power fabrication plant. Both Phase 1 and Phase 2 will generate 900 and 600 high value jobs in Malaysia, respectively. In total, 4,000 jobs will be created. The Kulim 3 fab building incorporates advanced energy efficiency and sustainable practices. Malaysia assumes a pivotal role in the global semiconductor supply chain. In 2023, the electrical and electronics (E&E) industry secured RM85.4 billion in approved investments. E&E is the major contributor to the country’s GDP growth, and is the sixth (6th) largest semiconductor exporter with a 7.5% global market share, as well as 13% of the global share for chip assembly. With one of the most diverse semiconductor sectors in the Asia Pacific, Malaysia has seen impressive growth. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, the industry attracted RM34.3 billion in approved investments from 34 projects, creating 6,221 new jobs. Very good article by Juin Yee Seoow of Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报 in Singapore on the development and future prospects of the Malaysian semiconductor industry, with a particular focus on Penang. There are a handful of centres of semiconductor manufacturing, assembly, testing and packaging in Southeast Asia, of which Penang is a huge provider of test and packaging capacity for businesses such as Intel Corporation, Infineon Technologies and Bosch. PENANG’S BATU KAWAN IS FAST BECOMING A SEMICON BASE FOR ADVANCED FAB EQUIPMENT SUPPLIERS Lam Research, one of the world’s top wafer fab equipment suppliers, opened their newest facility here in Aug 2021 with 800,000 sq ft space, its largest, costing RM 1 billion.  It will hire 600 employees locally. With customers like Intel and TSMC racing around the world to build more fabs, more will be needed. Lam Research came because of Penang's amazing semicon ecosystem.  They needed a dependable ecosystem of capable vendors that they can trust.  They need to expand.  Fast. Penang is already a global epicentre for semicon. 12% of the world’s semiconductor testing is done in Malaysia and 7% of global chips were shipped in 2022. Internationally well known suppliers in semicon are already here: Swiss-based VAT GROUP AG, and Comet Plasma Control Technologies and Ultra Clean Technology from California. This is creating more than an expansion opportunity for local precision machining and related companies like UWC Berhad, Pentamaster Corporation Berhad (Official), GREATECH TECHNOLOGY BERHAD, QDOS Flexcircuits, Jabil to become part of the semicon boom, to name a few. It’s now strategic.  And contributing to the National Semiconductor Strategy. Local Malaysian champion ViTrox Corporation Berhad is even constructing a University and Innovation Centre to develop the local workforce and pump the talent pipeline, having already opened their own ViTrox College earlier. More is happening. Even University of Wollongong-KDU has started their programs in their Penang campus here.  Not to mention the iconic The Ship Campus. Other backend semicon companies round up the ecosystem as they run out of space in Penang Island itself: Inari Amertron Berhad, Micron Technology, SUSTIO SDN BHD, Western Digital, Flex, Bosch, Broadcom. Oh, do you know that even world renowned med-tech companies are here too?   Dexcom, Boston Scientific, Smith+Nephew, Haemonetics The high tech talent is already here.  These are not just factories. That's way back 50 years ago. Today, they are advanced facilities in and of themselves with the latest tech to manage, produce, improve and develop new ways of manufacturing and contributing to advances in next gen products. As deepfakes generated by Artificial Intelligence become increasingly prevalent and convincing, I’ve been asked by many members of the public and media — both local and international — how Singapore is tackling the challenge of digitally manipulated content, especially with the General Elections set to be held by November 2025. Indeed, some countries which have held elections have started to see deepfakes or manipulated content depicting candidates saying things that they, in fact, did not say, or doing things that they, in fact, didn’t do. Such misinformation sows confusion about candidates and breeds mistrust in society during the critical time of elections. Deepfakes do not just attack our infrastructure of facts; they also threaten the foundations of our democratic system. Voters must be able to make informed choices based on facts, instead of being misled by untruths. To safeguard the integrity of our electoral process, Singapore has introduced the Elections (Integrity of Online Advertising) (Amendment) Bill in Parliament today. Once passed, this Bill will enhance our ability to swiftly counteract harmful digitally generated or manipulated online content of candidates that promotes or prejudices election outcomes. I look forward to the debate in the next Parliamentary sitting, where I am sure the House will discuss the issue robustly, reaffirming our commitment to protecting the integrity of our democracy and ensuring every Singaporean can exercise their rights with confidence. TSMC's third-quarter revenue easily beats market forecast TAIPEI (Reuters) -TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, reported on Wednesday third-quarter revenue that easily beat both the market and company's own forecasts as it reaped the benefit from artificial intelligence (AI) demand. For September alone, TSMC reported revenue jumped 39.6% year-on-year to T$251.87 billion. The company did not provide details in its brief revenue statement. TSMC will report full third quarter earnings on Oct. 17, when it will also update its outlook. As an Ex-AUO these places recall alots of memory. my Taiwanese friend share some insight to me, Micron's strategy to acquire AUO's plants, particularly the Tainan facility for wafer testing, reflects a targeted approach to strengthen its DRAM production capabilities amid rising demand.
