It was inspiring to see the incredible energy, innovation, and momentum at this year's AWS Summits across Asia-Pacific and Japan. Thousands of our customers and partners joined us at these events, eager to learn how they can leverage the power of the AWS Cloud to transform countries, customers, and communities. From the launch of game-changing services like Amazon Bedrock in Japan in October 2023, India in May 2024, to major new investments and customer announcements, it was clear that the future in APJ is incredibly bright and brimming with immense potential. Our customers across the region are leveraging AWS cloud technology in incredible ways to solve complex challenges, accelerate innovation, and deliver better experiences, and I’m very proud of how AWS is significantly investing in APJ to support this innovation and growth:   In Singapore, AWS will invest an additional S$12 billion ($9 billion) by 2028, doubling our total planned investment in the country to over S$23 billion ($17 billion). In South Korea, we announced plans to invest KRW 7.85 trillion ($5.88 billion) by 2027 to expand our cloud infrastructure, contributing KRW 15.06 trillion ($11.28 billion) to the country's GDP and supporting an estimated 12,325 local jobs annually. In Thailand, we announced a THB190 billion ($5 billion) investment by 2037 to launch a new AWS Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region in early 2025. In Australia, AWS has invested over AU$9.1 billion ($6.06 billion) in the Sydney Region since 2012, and plans to invest an additional AU$13.2 billion ($8.8 billion) in Sydney and Melbourne by 2027. This is estimated to contribute AU$35 billion to Australia's GDP and support 11,000 local jobs. In Japan, we announced a plan to invest 2.26 trillion yen ($14.96 billion) into our Tokyo and Osaka Regions from 2023 to 2027. This investment is expected to boost Japan's GDP by 5.57 trillion yen and create over 30,500 direct and indirect jobs annually. And in India, our planned $12.7 billion investment by 2030 will contribute $23.3 billion to the country's GDP by 2030 and support approximately 131,700 full-time jobs annually at local businesses.   Across the APJ region, we saw over 140,000 attendees – both in-person and virtual – come together to learn, innovate, and grow their businesses at our AWS Summits in APJ. This aligns perfectly with our purpose-driven mission at AWS to catalyse our customers, partners, and colleagues to solve the biggest challenges and unlock new possibilities. I'm excited to see what we can accomplish together in the year ahead as we continue to help our customers achieve cultural transformation by harnessing the innovative potential of the AWS Cloud.

Oracle has announced a plan to train up to 10,000 students and professionals in artificial intelligence over the next three years in Singapore. Among the initiatives is the offer of 300 internships and apprenticeships to polytechnic students, who will have an opportunity for employment within Oracle or its partners post-training. From my perspective, this initiative will be beneficial for both Singapore and Oracle. Launching education initiatives can have several strategic advantages, both internally for operations and externally for market and community impact. Let's delve deeper into why I believe this. 1) These initiatives can serve as a direct pipeline for recruiting top talent. Participants who have completed Oracle's training programs are more likely to be considered for recruitment, already knowing the company's culture and processes. 2) They will improve their CSR profile by contributing to education, enhancing public perception, and increasing brand loyalty among consumers. 3) They are also expanding their user base by educating potential users on their technologies. For example, Oracle training individuals on its specific platforms or tools increases the likelihood that these tools will be adopted. 4) Education initiatives can strengthen the ecosystems around their products or services by increasing the number of people who can use or support their technology. 5) Companies that are actively involved in education may have a greater voice in policy discussions related to technology and education. This could potentially influence regulations that affect their business. 6) In industries with stringent regulation, investing in societal goods like education can generate goodwill with regulatory bodies. In conclusion, Oracle's educational initiatives in Singapore represent a forward-thinking strategy that supports its business goals while contributing positively to the broader tech landscape. As Oracle continues to expand its influence in cloud computing and AI, its commitment to education and community engagement will likely serve as a cornerstone of its ongoing success and influence in the tech industry. This is a commendable model of how integrating corporate strength with community development can lead to sustained growth and innovation. "With the growth, we didn't get corresponding productivity increases in our company." In an interview at #BrainstormAI in Singapore, Glean cofounder and CEO Arvind Jain shared that when he founded his previous company, Rubrik, he noticed a decline in productivity as the company grew compared to when it was a smaller organization. "We asked employees what was in the way of getting high productivity, and our surveys showed that people were really struggling to find information at work," he added. I’m delighted to share the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region is now open, representing our first AWS Region in Malaysia, our 3rd in ASEAN, and our 34th AWS Region globally. This investment will contribute an estimated $12.1B to Malaysia’s GDP, and represents a $6.2B investment from AWS in the country through 2038. With this new region, customers and partners across ASEAN can now choose where they can store their data with the same robust security standards, high availability, and fault-tolerant design as our other AWS Regions around the globe. AWS Training & Certification teams have already trained more than 100,000 people in cloud skills since 2017 in Malaysia alone, contributing to upskilling our customer, partner, and developer communities in the latest AI and generative AI advancements—and we are not done yet. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit Malaysia in my current role at AWS, including my most recent visit in June 2023, when I connected with the local AWS Malaysia team, met with customers, and presented at the inaugural Energy Asia Week (the largest energy conference in the Asia Pacific Region). The excitement on the ground was palpable, and I was inspired by the ongoing innovation customers, such as PETRONAS, are driving with AWS Cloud technology. With the news that #Singapore’s Prime Minister tops the salary chart of world leaders, come a slew of admiration, disdain and many hiding under the blanket of the purgatory of hinting without saying and saying by hinting! In reading many of these comments, statement and posts, lies the foundation of their decision - whether silo perspective, unfair outlook, or simply stirring discontent with incomplete facts. My article will hopefully shed light to this argument. My point - If one pegs GDP of Singapore to revenue of a company, our PM’s earnings is but a paltry percentage to the percentage of what CEOs are paid to what the company makes. Singapore Post (SingPost) is making progress in its transformation into a regional logistics enterprise. Group CFO Vincent Yik says SingPost achieved a “good set” of results in a “pretty challenging” business environment when economies are slowing and inflationary pressures are staying high amid geopolitical uncertainties. In FY2024 ended March 31, SingPost’s earnings surged 217.4% y-o-y to $78.3 million, mainly due to the exceptional gain of $36.8 million on property revaluation.

Chelliah Senior Vice President of Technology and Customer Strategy at Oracle. Singapore reclaims the top spot as the world’s most competitive economy in 2024, up from fourth place a year ago, according to the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) World Competitiveness Ranking on June 18. This is the first time Singapore has been ranked number one since 2020, and has outperformed other economies such as Switzerland and Denmark, says IMD. IMD assesses 67 global economies, over survey data and 164 pieces of statistical data between March and May 2024. Singapore ranked high in terms of labour market, attitudes and values, and technological infrastructure, but conversely was less competitive on price, health and environment, and societal framework.
